As if their stance on refusing to safeguard their female staff wasn’t bad enough - they seriously have to be taking the piss now with this.

No actual female models available?

sullen pin-head in his sack-like sparkly frock

Perfect description.

Bella does not look too happy, but does look very smart in that suit!

Going on the dogs I know (NADALT, I know) Bella is probably unhappy because that chicken is tiny.

Myalternate · 30/10/2024 08:30

The tree looks tiny and the shoes are ginormous! Didn’t even notice the dress because it didn’t look as if the dress really had anything to do with the photo.

I’m in my early 30’s so it’s probably not marketed at my age group.

The perspective makes the dress look like a long sequin T-shirt.

Maddy70 · 30/10/2024 08:53

I really like this dress. The baubles are hideous!

It’s tragic, really. John Lewis are so, so desperate to be the cool kids running with the TRA crowd. Someone came up with the genius idea of fully embracing LGBTQ++++ without thinking it through and pausing to consider their existing customer base - overwhelmingly women, overwhelmingly a slightly older demographic with a large subset of parents of young children and retired people.

Cue the infamous ad with the boy in dress and make-up trashing the house while his mother and sister cowered in the background. Cue the staff magazine with 'Ruby’ (or whatever his name is) gurning coyly and going on about inclusion and feeling seen, while naturally keeping very quiet about his whip and his bedroom legs-akimbo pics. Cue the in-store display of questionable photos that was hastily removed when people raised complaints. Cue the decision to let any man - just on their whim and say-so - use the women’s changing rooms and toilets no matter what the women customers feel.

Now along comes sullen pin-head in his sack-like sparkly frock and socks and his frumpy granny outfit to persuade us women to splash out hundreds on glam party wear.

Seriously? Are they having a laugh? Do they honestly believe the TRAs and their friends will be making a beeline for dear old Johnny Loulou?

No. But women won’t be either. Oh dear. What a pity. Never mind.

Absolutely 💯 thank you.

The ad as a stand alone although pretty bloody grim isn’t the issue, it’s the long running pattern of JL that bastion of the middle aged middle class woman being absolutely captured and treating its core audience with utter contempt..

They might as well have their Christmas ad with a mob of TRA’s holding up signs saying ‘Fuck you grandma it’s all about the men now’

Another ugly JL ad. Clumpy everything and saturated in sludge colours. Ugly furniture, ugly room, ugly dress, ugly hair, ugly shoes. They’ve even made the tree look about as festive as job centre foyer. 🙄

"As festive as a job centre foyer" GrinGrinGrin

Obviously I know what you're talking about but please, please can we stop assuming than a man must identify as a woman because of the way he dresses.

I have a gender non conforming son who has been repeatedly pushed down the trans route because he likes long hair, eyeliner, colourful tops and yes the occasional punky skirt.

Men can wear anything they like and still be men.

I do agree if they're targeting women for this I wouldn't be drawn to it and they styling is naff.

“Men can wear anything they like and still be men.”

100% this!!! I don’t know why people find this hard to understand.

ILoveNigelTufnel · 30/10/2024 09:27

Awfully dull / uninspiring advert though but it’s done the job if we’re talking about it…

Harvestfestivalknickers · 30/10/2024 09:32

Gosh that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and full of Festive cheer!

dutysuite · 30/10/2024 09:33

I wouldn’t buy the dress because I don’t want to look like a man in a dress which is the vibe I’m getting from the photo.

It's only done the job if people spend money buying stuff at JL shops or on its website.

Talking about it on its own contributes nothing to JL's bottom line.

Talking about it and associated behaviour at JL which puts people off shopping with the store actually has a negative effect.

Ask Gerald Ratner.

No one finds it hard to understand. That point been discussed several times up thread as to what the issue with John Lewis is

The facial expression and hidden left hand make it look as if they’ve been caught pissing on the tree!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 29/10/2024 20:41

It looks like a still from a 'festive' episode of Inside No. 9

This. Although if it was Reece Shearsmith in a dress he’d actually look a lot more like a woman than this.

Actually I’d very much like to see a Steve Pemberton/RS ad campaign for something!

Boiledbeetle · 30/10/2024 09:46

Helleofabore · 30/10/2024 08:28

Are YOU playing with perspective and proportions here too Boiled? Or is that a more classy spatchcock dinner for one there? Poussin?

Bella is the replacement dog. Head of the family was going to be Benji, but there was an unfortunate incident with Benji and the turkey.

The poussin has valiantly stepped into the turkey role in the hope that no one would notice the glaring fact it's not a bloody turkey!

The model looks like a serial killer eyeing up his next victim over his shoulder. Hardly the spirit of Christmas.
Which idiot thought this was a good idea?

With the fingers in a gun shape. 😮

I don't like any of the advert. It conjures up the image of a pervy 70s creep taking upskirt photographs of a school child who's tried on a grown-up's dress.

Definitely a stills-capture from a dodgy film.

JL lost the plot years ago anyway. Such a shame- they used to be a reliable place to shop. Now they're just seedy.

borntobequiet · 30/10/2024 09:56

The sad thing is that this may have been the actual intention, and that it was supposed to be clever.

You're probably right.

How tedious. It's the kind of thing you might expect a teenager to do :" Hey, look at me! I'm so edgy and unique! You're so boring and middle aged; you have no idea!"

Just pretentious shite.

ODFOx · 30/10/2024 10:08

I think that's a FC image not a JL one.

Are JL claiming that the model is female? Or is it just a picture of someone wearing a dress that bothers you OP? I'm not seeing the problem, but then I don't make no seeing women in trousers either. It's just clothes.

ShamblesRock · 30/10/2024 09:50

Tbf, he's holding a champagne coupe. He does look like the photographer has just asked him to climb up and be the tree topper.

The photo is very uncanny valley, the rear wall of the room sloping away. The tiny under-decorated tree, the giant model with tiny head, unpleasant expression and ginormous feet, the lack of sparkle, the dreary colours.

Would any tw seeing this ad even be interested in it? I doubt they want to see themselves as anything other than 'women' in dresses. I think even if the model was female but looks male in that frock who would want clothing that seemed to give that effect? Who is this ad aimed at...Stonewall?

HearMePlough · 30/10/2024 10:15

It's a shit picture but the gender of the model is utterly irrelevant to that.

I can see the dress, and whether it's on a twig of a woman or an androgynous man makes no difference to me. I imagine this bizarre excess of rage was what early trouser-wearing women must have experienced, so pretty sure society is going to move forward regardless.

Doesn't mean I don't agree with single sex spaces for those who need them, but an androgynous models aren't part of that discussion in my mind. It's a shame the conversation has to get diluted and derailed with this sort of inoffensive stuff that someone cynically posts to desperately try and get a trending thread.

ShamblesRock · 30/10/2024 10:20

Oh yes, I can see the glass now, but still the two fingers remain prominent.

lcakethereforeIam · 30/10/2024 10:23

Yes, definitely two fingers. Surprised it wasn't just a single middle one.
