As if their stance on refusing to safeguard their female staff wasn’t bad enough - they seriously have to be taking the piss now with this.

No actual female models available?

It's all rather dull. Even the sequins aren't sparkling.

I wonder what's in the big red parcel on the floor. A bumper pack of set squares? A giant wedge of cheese?

Yes - it's probably the artisanal cheese 🤔

Obviously I know what you're talking about but please, please can we stop assuming than a man must identify as a woman because of the way he dresses.

I have a gender non conforming son who has been repeatedly pushed down the trans route because he likes long hair, eyeliner, colourful tops and yes the occasional punky skirt.

Men can wear anything they like and still be men.

I do agree if they're targeting women for this I wouldn't be drawn to it and they styling is naff.

Edited

Well said. This is what I came here to say.

Why is everyone assuming this is a trans woman? And who cares who it's modelled on. Modelling is nothing to do with actually advertising the product to be sold - it's all about brand and messaging.

In this case they're saying: extreme fashion focused and inclusive. So what.

Bloke in a dress advertising what is presumably a party frock bought by mainly women. Not helpful as a fit model as has no hips or bust. Ideological issues aside, poor marketing strategy.

Edited

This.

Brow bone.
Jaw line.
Feet.

JL late to the bandwagon. Male issue aside it's a boring dreary advert.

Oh come on. My DH has very long hair and wears nail varnish (aging metalhead) but that's not what this advert is.

I have no issue with gender nonconforming MEN.

ReadWithScepticism · 29/10/2024 20:12

Actually, the more I look at that pic the more I like it. I would quite like to be present at that Christmas Day. It would be interestingly strange and stylishly chilling . A David Lynch Christmas.

Perhaps he will be doing their Christmas ad this year Grin

TwistedWonder · 29/10/2024 20:13

There’s been a lot of backlash against John Lewis in the past year or so due to their refusal to listen to women’s fears around allowing any man who says he’s a woman to use female changing rooms and staff have been accused of being bigots for raising concerns.

They've also been criticised for their support of Mermaids and advice on chest binders for young girls.

John Lewis core target market is women and after the backlash they’ve received over safeguarding and lack of support for female customers and staff, having a male model advertising a dress seems to be rubbing salt into the already open wound imo.

The dress looks shit. They're not selling it well.

ethelredonagoodday · 29/10/2024 20:13

It's not hugely festive is it?

Absolutely. I grew up in the 80’s when being gender non conforming was celebrated.

My issue with JL is regarding multiple incidents where women’s safeguarding concerns have been shouted down with claims of bigotry plus their vocal support of Mermaids.

This seems to be just one more time where they’re showing no respect or consideration for their female core customer bases concerns.

A bloke in a dress with kids ankle socks.

I hate it

Scutterbug · 29/10/2024 20:18

What offends you?

And I bet you that dress is categorised under "women" if you search for it online.

I agree with you, they are taking the piss.

I'd go to a David Lynch Christmas.

Gabbyghoul · 29/10/2024 20:29

@TwistedWonder sorry if that was unclear, I was agreeing with you!

No issue with gnc men. My issue is with woman blackface aka men pretending to be women, which JL are clearly fine with.

Using a male model and pretending it's a woman.

What offends you?

John Lewis and their contemptuous misogyny towards women

Maybe because we’ve been battered by it for the past few years. Dont pretend we haven’t.

This is an image of a man dressed in a dress too short for him and he is wearing kids ankle socks. If you don’t think there is an issue with this fine - but don’t gas light other people in to thinking there is nothing wrong with this styling.

The message sent here is teenage girl vibe. He is a grown man

Gabbyghoul · 29/10/2024 20:32

@ShowmetheBotox Exactly

Absolutely agree. Its more the general contempt towards women than JL have shown time and time again.

This one photo alone apart from being really grim, dreary and really unappealing isn’t the issue. It’s the pattern that JL are showing as their MO now that women don’t matter

Maybe JL is giving a nod to panto season- Cinderella’s evil step mother decorating the Christmas tree

an ugly ‘sister’ ?

MaryWelly · 29/10/2024 20:38

Beautiful dress and great advert. Love John Lewis! It's so important to support shops like this instead of Amazon who treat their workers terribly and Bezos has refused to endorse Harris! Now that is the real scandal....!

Maybe the 'feminists' on this thread should focus on the big and real threats to women like Trump, police refusing to take stalking cases, instead of pouring all that needed energy into penalising minorities Trump style?

eatfigs · 29/10/2024 20:38

Nothing wrong with this except it's not particularly cheery. But maybe that's what JL are going for.

Men are the largest threat to women.

Especially men who pretend to be women.
