As if their stance on refusing to safeguard their female staff wasn’t bad enough - they seriously have to be taking the piss now with this.

No actual female models available?

To be fair that's an incredibly ugly dress and even the most stunning human in the world would be hard pushed to make something quite so hideous look attractive.
But what is that photo / print / drawing in background meant to be?
The advert has a very 1970s feel to it, maybe that was the intention, I can almost smell the boiled cabbage and over cooked sprout aroma.
I'm assuming the clothes the model is wearing is for men, I think they might have their work cut out selling enough to make a profit.
No issue with men wearing dresses or skirts, but I would have thought the market would be very small. Still if JL want blokes to be their only target audience good luck with staying in business. Maybe whoever runs JL has had enough and wants to see the business fold, maybe they are hoping for an enormous payout?!

I don't think the dress itself is incredibly ugly might look okay on some people, but the style doesn't suit the model in question.

ComfortableCushion · 30/10/2024 00:00

It's creepy and extremely unchristmassy. I don't have an issue with men wearing what they like, individuality is great. But this gives weird, sinister undertones and I have no idea who it's supposed to appeal to.

CriticalCondition · 30/10/2024 00:30

The cold look over the shoulder, the weird body proportions, the little girl socks and massive shoes - the whole scene gives off a creepy vibe.
I'm glad they didn't do a shot with the model sitting down because that dress is very, very short.

DiscoBeat · 30/10/2024 00:37

KingOfPeace · 29/10/2024 19:18

Obviously I know what you're talking about but please, please can we stop assuming than a man must identify as a woman because of the way he dresses.

I have a gender non conforming son who has been repeatedly pushed down the trans route because he likes long hair, eyeliner, colourful tops and yes the occasional punky skirt.

Men can wear anything they like and still be men.

I do agree if they're targeting women for this I wouldn't be drawn to it and they styling is naff.

Edited

I agree. Dislike the dress or the way it's worn (I wouldn't choose the shoes and socks either) if you like. Or love it. But don't get personal about the model or make comments about who you think should or should be wearing it. It should be available to anyone without discrimination or judgement.

SnowFrogJelly · 30/10/2024 00:38

How do you know it's a bloke

At least it got your attention

SapphireSeptember · 30/10/2024 03:13

@MaryWelly Harris ran to the bedside of a man who was shot by police after raping his partner and trying to abduct their kids, after he'd been removed from her home for domestic violence. He got away with it and got a massive payout. His victim has been forgotten. I can't even find the article where she gave her side of the story anymore. 😠 Maybe Harris could have sympathised with a black woman who'd been the victim of domestic violence a bit more instead of her abuser?

Bookery · 30/10/2024 03:56

I think views may vary on how voters perceive lawyers who have represented those accused of sexually abusing a woman, and different people might apply different standards when those lawyers are female.

The choice is either Harris or Trump, and while there may be female voters in the US who are not really comfortable with several cases Harris has taken on, chances are they are repelled by Trump's long history of sexual abuse.

Further discussion on this topic would derail the thread.

BlackToes · 30/10/2024 04:37

He can wear whatever he wants to wear. It’s non of my business, however I’ve always enjoyed seeing people experiment with fashion … the 80s punks, New Romantics, tie dye, love the variety and creativeness.

Compash · 30/10/2024 05:26

Do they have women modelling the men's clothes?

BlastedPimples · 30/10/2024 06:34

It's just a shit advert. Dull. Uninspiring. Depressing actually.

It's hardly experimenting with fashion really even if it is a bloke in a dress.

Putting men in dresses (if it's a man - can't be sure) will not motivate me to buy it. I don't care what a man looks like in it.

HerImpeccableRightnessLoobiJee · 30/10/2024 06:55

TempestTost · 29/10/2024 23:18

It reminds me a little of the CK ads with Kate Moss that were made to look like basement porn. Kind of deliberately slightly shit so as to look edgy.

Anyway - I don't really believe "some men just like to wear dresses and then they are men's dresses." If they are made for women they don't really fit men, and men's "dresses" which are made for them aren't called dresses.

There are men who like to be highly edgy in terms of fashion, or are rock stars, which is totally legitimate but it's not that they just "like" those things. The whole point is to be unconventional and push a boundary. This is a small group, btw.

And apart from that there are men who want to dress as women, which is fine in some cases (on stage, Halloween, escape from prison) but not so much in others (peeping in women's toilets.)

Edited

“Kind of deliberately slightly shit so as to look edgy.“

I think you could have hit on something there.

Perhaps the message they are aiming for is: “Have no fear, young fashionistas! You won’t find yourself wearing exactly the same sequinned frock as your granny when you wear THIS sequinned frock!”

Do they have women modelling the men's clothes?

Of course not. Its only ever about the men in the world of John Lewis.

Maybe it's just the first of JL's 'Inside No 9 meets Waitrose No 1' advent calendar - next week, identical twin grandmas in sinister real reindeer horns, then Bella the family lab at the head of the table wearing in a suit and tie. All shot from the skirting board perspective of someone recently given festive hallucinogenic drugs.

borntobequiet · 30/10/2024 07:32

It’s a try-too-hard middle of the road global fashion brand being featured by a try-too-hard solidly middle of the road and middle class retailer, trying to look edgy, and of course the result is shit.
Most fashion brands trying to do this look awful, Max Mara’s adverts on this site are a good example.

ApocalipstickNow · 30/10/2024 07:54

Bella the family lab at the head of the table wearing in a suit and tie.

Ngl, I’m in for this.

It’s tragic, really. John Lewis are so, so desperate to be the cool kids running with the TRA crowd. Someone came up with the genius idea of fully embracing LGBTQ++++ without thinking it through and pausing to consider their existing customer base - overwhelmingly women, overwhelmingly a slightly older demographic with a large subset of parents of young children and retired people.

Cue the infamous ad with the boy in dress and make-up trashing the house while his mother and sister cowered in the background. Cue the staff magazine with 'Ruby’ (or whatever his name is) gurning coyly and going on about inclusion and feeling seen, while naturally keeping very quiet about his whip and his bedroom legs-akimbo pics. Cue the in-store display of questionable photos that was hastily removed when people raised complaints. Cue the decision to let any man - just on their whim and say-so - use the women’s changing rooms and toilets no matter what the women customers feel.

Now along comes sullen pin-head in his sack-like sparkly frock and socks and his frumpy granny outfit to persuade us women to splash out hundreds on glam party wear.

Seriously? Are they having a laugh? Do they honestly believe the TRAs and their friends will be making a beeline for dear old Johnny Loulou?

No. But women won’t be either. Oh dear. What a pity. Never mind.

Helleofabore · 30/10/2024 08:07

Are they trying to get the model to appear smaller or larger than they are? Are they deliberately playing around with camera angles? Shooting from low down for instance?

These images of this model look very awkward and don’t show the clothes well. For instance, the white shirt being open low on the chest, doesn’t show the shirt well and just looks ill fitting.

Bella does not look too happy, but does look very smart in that suit!

Snowypeaks · 30/10/2024 08:20

You could do a men's version of any women's clothing. But putting a man in a woman's dress - cut for and patterned on women's bodies - is like saying there's no physical difference between a man and a woman, that men and women are physically interchangeable. They're not. Even the especially slender models have women's proportions. A skinny guy has male proportions.

Apart from the practical problem of this photo being useless as a guide as to whether the dress would suit any particular woman or not, that's what I don't like about it.

Are YOU playing with perspective and proportions here too Boiled? Or is that a more classy spatchcock dinner for one there? Poussin?

Pat888 · 30/10/2024 08:28

Perhaps bad publicity is best policy - gets more clicks. Makes more sales. Just don't shop there.

Myalternate · 30/10/2024 08:30

The tree looks tiny and the shoes are ginormous! Didn’t even notice the dress because it didn’t look as if the dress really had anything to do with the photo.

I’m in my early 30’s so it’s probably not marketed at my age group.

Yeah, a hint of cleavage shirt really doesn’t work on men’s chests. Unless they have had breast augmentation that also changes that cleavage. The proportional distance between breasts is different due to male chest proportions.
