As if their stance on refusing to safeguard their female staff wasn’t bad enough - they seriously have to be taking the piss now with this.

No actual female models available?

I prefer to live in a White Company fantasy Christmas myself . John Lewis can keep their dull tree, clumpy shoes Christmas.

On the French Connection website it's in womenswear and modelled by female models. JL have decided to go their own way here.

On JL website it’s worn by a woman - this was a direct mailing to their customers.

You've got to wonder what happened in the marketing meeting then. Are they confused about their customer base? Who do they think is forking out £165 for Xmas party dresses from middle of the road retailers? Clue: not Hoxton gender fluid types.

Chersfrozenface · 29/10/2024 20:52

Rhaidimiddim · 29/10/2024 20:21

And I bet you that dress is categorised under "women" if you search for it online.

I agree with you, they are taking the piss.

It is indeed.

My 63 year old mum has recently retired from working in a JL lingerie dept.

I might suggest she does an AMA, the bullshit she's dealt with.

TRA in management I'd expect. Or young bandwagoners not knowing their core audience and wanting to woke it up.

Photo angle really weird and has a very dreary 40s/early 50s vibe.

Using a male model and pretending it's a woman.

It is you interpreting it that way isn’t it? Could be a man in a dress, could be trans, could be androgynous…
doesn’t stress me any way.

John Lewis and their contemptuous misogyny towards women

Why is that advert misogynistic? Just a person in a dress.

Autumnalsun · 29/10/2024 21:01

Are you sure that’s not a woman?

It looks like it.

The advert is not a good one and I wouldn’t know what it’s advertising.

But I will stick up for them that white socks are ‘in fashion’.

There’s a saying that you can tell how old someone is by their socks.

If they’ve got trainer socks on that you can’t see, they’re over 30.
If they’ve got on white socks that you can see, they’re under 30.

Does his head look really tiny compared with his legs? Is that what you mean about an odd angle?

What a bare room though. The opposite of Christmas cosyness.

Beautiful dress and great advert. Love John Lewis! It's so important to support shops like this instead of Amazon who treat their workers terribly and Bezos has refused to endorse Harris! Now that is the real scandal....!

Maybe the 'feminists' on this thread should focus on the big and real threats to women like Trump, police refusing to take stalking cases, instead of pouring all that needed energy into penalising minorities Trump style?

Real threats like -

  • rapists being housed in women’s prisons
  • men taking part in women’s sports
  • men in women’s charging room
  • women being threatened, abused and assaulted for speaking out in support of single sex safeguarding
  • children bring mutilated and sterilised before they’ve reached adulthood

That sort of thing?

It's definitely a man.

I think it's sad American extremism has fucked everything up (again). Ten years ago everyone would just have gone oh cool someone wearing what they want to wear confidently. Now because of the IT'S LITERALLY A WOMAN, PHOBE bullshit it's inevitably interpreted in another way

SensibleSigma · 29/10/2024 21:05

It’s a horrible vibe. It’s ugly.

What are they trying to sell, and who to?

They are taking a lovely dress, that could look good on a beautiful woman, and making it graceless.

This isn’t about trans, for me.
If it was a gender non conforming man wearing things that looked good I’d have no issue. But it’s that weird, childlike vibe again.

Men can be gender non conforming and still masculine. This is something else and it’s unsettling.

As I’ve said in my posts, it’s JL and their general culture of misogyny that this ad is just another element of.

Their who ethos appears to be ‘fuck you women, men’s feelings trump yours so STFU’

In the main dress section it is modelled by a beautiful black woman. Why photograph it again? She looks fabulous in it.

Why did my post get deleted?????

WhiteWriting · 29/10/2024 21:09

Let's call this what it is - a cynical attempt by a struggling retailer to capture market share. However you fuck off your loyal customer base at your peril.

MeAgainAndAgain · 29/10/2024 21:10

Here’s the dress modelled beautifully.
