As if their stance on refusing to safeguard their female staff wasn’t bad enough - they seriously have to be taking the piss now with this.

No actual female models available?

Beautiful dress and great advert. Love John Lewis! It's so important to support shops like this instead of Amazon who treat their workers terribly and Bezos has refused to endorse Harris! Now that is the real scandal....!

Maybe the 'feminists' on this thread should focus on the big and real threats to women like Trump, police refusing to take stalking cases, instead of pouring all that needed energy into penalising minorities Trump style?

Margaret Atwood called. She needs the wimple back.

Why did my post get deleted?????

There was nothing controversial or offensive in your post.

Octoberaddsagale · 29/10/2024 21:12

It’s not available on the website now, as far as I can see. Has the dress sold out or has JL removed it?

This is the only F C sequin mesh mini dress which appears when I search.

Edit - I see the photo has been posted above, while I was dithering about.

It’s a horrible vibe. It’s ugly.

What are they trying to sell, and who to?

They are taking a lovely dress, that could look good on a beautiful woman, and making it graceless.

This isn’t about trans, for me.
If it was a gender non conforming man wearing things that looked good I’d have no issue. But it’s that weird, childlike vibe again.

Men can be gender non conforming and still masculine. This is something else and it’s unsettling.

Even back in the days if Boy George and Marilyn, they were gender non confirming openly proud gay men who were still masculine and not trying to impersonate women. The whole ‘gender bender’ fashion (as it was called back then) was completely embraced.

By the same token Annie Lennox wore a very traditional male suit, cropped her hair and looked stunningly feminine

That isn’t and never has been the issue

I don’t have a problem with men wearing dresses, but it strikes me that this is not appealing at all to their customer base.

OptimismvsRealism · 29/10/2024 21:12

Seriously is it deletable to say that trans gender ideology makes no sense in a world where people born with vaginas are plunged into hideous lives solely because of their bodies (as I said in my deleted post)? If so, I absolutely give up on existence and roll on the meteor.

Snoken · 29/10/2024 21:13

I don’t hate it at all, it’s an interesting campaign and it clearly works in the way that people talk about it and drives traffic to JL. Having said that, this in not aimed at JL current target customer. For that they would have had a much more traditional Christmas campaign, but nobody would talk about that. This sort of styling appeals to a Lazy Oaf customer but they would not be seen dead shopping at JL. It’s an attempt to appeal to a younger and cooler market but it’s too abrupt to go from middle class and middle age to this.

TiramisuThief · 29/10/2024 21:13

Lol at the Inside No.9/David Lynch Xmas

Spot on.

The perspective is all really weird. Why is the models head so tiny?

Also, the actual garment will have been tailored for a female body. So it is not helping the females for whom it was designed to gauge whether it might suit them; and it is not doing justice to the dress either.

Have JLP commissioned a range of dresses designed for men? If not, why not, if they really want to be progressive? Perhaps there is not a big enough market for dresses for men - in which case, respect your bloody female customers by modelling dresses designed for female bodies using females.

Acht I don't love it. Weird shoulder line.

Well, I mean, you’re right 😁 so, here’s the dress modelled appropriately.

One big and real threat to women is that 99% of sex offenders are male and 97% of those subjected to rape are female. Men who identify as women commit sexual offences at the same or possibly higher rate as all men. Strangely enough putting on a dress doesn't stop men's rate of sexual offending. John Lewis have said that men who identify as women can use the same toilets and changing rooms as women despite the fact that single sex spaces exist for women's privacy and safety. That is the background to this advert.

In the main dress section it is modelled by a beautiful black woman. Why photograph it again? She looks fabulous in it.

Because those images don’t belong to JL, they belong to French Connection. FC would have paid for that and the usage.

Portakalkedi · 29/10/2024 21:19

Not sure just who they think that appeals to!£

Octoberaddsagale · 29/10/2024 21:21

The Frech Connection website has five pictures of the dress on their website, shown on these two models.

John Lewis hasn’t written to this customer yet: does it look as if the first photo in this thread was taken specifically by/for JL rather than JL’s usual way of using the brand’s photos?

Are you sure that’s not a woman?

It looks like it.

The advert is not a good one and I wouldn’t know what it’s advertising.

But I will stick up for them that white socks are ‘in fashion’.

There’s a saying that you can tell how old someone is by their socks.

If they’ve got trainer socks on that you can’t see, they’re over 30.
If they’ve got on white socks that you can see, they’re under 30.

I've seen other photos of the same model. It's a man. I have hips and boobs, a dress that fits a stick insect male body isn't going to fit me properly. I'm fed up seeing men where women are supposed to be.

It's just getting so boring now and quite predictable.

Absolutely. Why not a range of more traditionally female clothing designed and cut for the male body if it truly is about being gender non conforming.

Bloke in a dress advertising what is presumably a party frock bought by mainly women. Not helpful as a fit model as has no hips or bust. Ideological issues aside, poor marketing strategy.

Edited

Quite. I have tits (droopy yes despite a good bra) and hips. Not exactly on show there. Now that is quite clingy and probably not my colour but I would like to see it worn by a female with a body so I can at least start to assess if it would suit me. Isn't that the point of photos on the website? To allow us to initially assess, without a store visit and try on, if something is suitable?

I know it’s a bit off topic but I love the way Never Fully Dressed advertise their clothes showing each outfit on a range of models of different sizes to show what the clothes look like on various bodies

Gonegirl7 · 29/10/2024 21:29

It says French connection in the bottom corner

SensibleSigma · 29/10/2024 21:31

Actually I’m going off the dress having seen it on the women. Why is it designed to make women look like girls who have grown out of their summer dress? Long long limbs poking out of an ill proportioned dress, like a child who’s had a growth spurt. All out of proportion, waiting for the body to catch up to the limbs.

FanFckingTastic · 29/10/2024 21:35

Ugly shoes
Ugly socks
Ugly room decor
Ugly bloke

Dress might have been OK but given everything else I think I'll pass. What happened to inspirational and aspirational advertising? If you are going to use a bloke to advertise women's clothes then could we at least have a hot one?

Funnily, men who wish to wear female appareil appear not to be catered for by JLP. If JLP were to stock a range of dresses, blouses, feminine trousers etc designed for the male body, who could object?
But, no - they take what belongs to wonen instead. Very TRA.
