And so another trans bashing thread begins. Pathetic.

It wasn’t a trans bashing thread at all

even you were talking about men, no one mentioned trans til parent mentioned they were trans

ParentToAngelsAndOneOnTheWay · 20/10/2024 01:03

Seeing as women make up half the population it is most people and also women aren't the only ones who go through the menopause

Here we go…

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 20/10/2024 08:33

And actually if we are including non binary and transpeople then your claim of ‘51% means most’ doesn’t hold any water because you have no idea how many women are out there

Datun · 20/10/2024 08:33

tweddler · 20/10/2024 08:26

This is what they say about testicular cancer screening: "this is for men, some non-binary or intersex people and transgender women, even after full surgery as the prostate isn’t removed".

Edited

Honestly, 'some' non binary people. It's almost quaint. What next? Those with a front bottom need not apply? 😂

Drivingawayfromhome · 20/10/2024 08:39

It's not precious to insist on medically accurate language. The statement 'Most of the population' will experience menopause for a third of their lives is really stretching it, and may confuse people with English as a second language or a limited education.

And that's what infuriates me - supposedly inclusive language is hugely exclusive to many sections of society and none of the defenders of examples such as Bupa's seem to give a shit about that.

NotBadConsidering · 20/10/2024 08:42

Most people will experience one day in their lives for a third of their lives? Has someone been watching too much Loki?

Christ on a bicycle. Do adult humans not know about male menopause? And do they post so confidently without a quick Google?

Rainbow Wow GIF by Declan McKenna

You think that men bleed from their genitals and then in middle age, stop and have issues around the cessation of the hormones that caused them to bleed from the onset of puberty?

Helleofabore · 20/10/2024 08:48

XChrome · 20/10/2024 02:32

It's called andropause and it's nothing like menopause. There is no "male menopause." Using that term is trying to make an equivalency where it does not exist.

Thank you.

The fact there is someone declaring that a male person will go through ‘menopause’ because their testes go through hypogonadism is just adding to the inaccuracy.

The term ‘menopause’ as already said by others, requires menses to be possible. It is not just the production of a hormone. Allowing any male person to believe that they are experiencing ‘menopause’ is harmful to those male people but also to all female people, those who in long established language conventions are described as girls and women.

SpottySpotSpots · 20/10/2024 08:53

Errahstop · 20/10/2024 02:07

Surely the point of the 'most people' is to make people think Wow! Most people! And then realise that...most people are women. There seems to be a determination to be offended that bewilders me. I just don't see what is so offensive about this.

Edited

I'm baffled that you keep asserting that the stats are OK because "most people are women". In what world is just over 50% "most"?! If 51% of pupils passed their exam and a school told you "most pupils here pass their exams" would that be OK to you? If employment was at 51% and the government announced that "most people are employed" would consider that to be factual and not misleading?!

Do you understand how search engines work?

Because anti scientific crap written by people with no medical knowledge and/or a political agenda will also show up on Google.

Hopefully you don't believe vaccines cause autism or that the world is flat, but if you Google, you will find things telling you that both these things are true.

There is absolutely no such thing as the male menopause because the menopause is the end of a woman's natural fertility, characterised by the cessation of menstruation.

For the avoidance of doubt, there is no such thing as male menstruation either. If you menstruate, you are female, and if you were born male, whatever you are experiencing is not menstruation. If you are a trans woman and you have abdominal cramps as a result of the hormones you are taking, it is probably constipation linked to progesterone use. (Progesterone slows down digestion to give the body more time to extract maximum nutrition from food and nourish a growing embryo/foetus. If you are male you do not need it.) If you are a post op trans woman and you are bleeding from your neo vagina you need A&E, not a tampon.

Technically it is the definition of most. But I wouldn't personally feel that 51% is most.

If only there was a word for these strange and mysterious people.

Well, quite! And one of the first results is very likely to be the anti-scientific propaganda sheet Wikipedia.

Megifer · 20/10/2024 09:08

Very quick Google - numerous sources- seems to suggest there are now more men than women.

So the "most" is very definitely incorrect anyway.

WaterThyme · 20/10/2024 09:11

As someone who was born a girl I’m curious, @ParentToAngelsAndOneOnTheWay as to what makes me a woman.

I never wanted dolls, I liked construction toys. I spent most of my time doing maths and logic puzzles. I read superhero comics and graduated to sci-fi. I studied maths and science moving on to a career in software engineering. I have never worn makeup apart from on stage.

I have never been pregnant, the most womanly thing a human being can do.

What makes me a woman?

I have however rejected gender stereotypes and fought for women and girls to be able to live their lives in whatever way they choose. I have tried to open doors so that women can be active and influential across society as a whole. I have tried to remove the constraints that gender forces on women and all people.

My body makes me a woman. My mind makes me a feminist.

How does it work for you?

jabbaf · 20/10/2024 09:14

"I'm not a woman but I'm pregnant, I menstruate and will more likely than not go through the menopause one day"

You're a female human doing the most womanly physical activity a woman can do in her life: growing and birthing another human.
Non binary is a meaningless thing.

To add to the above, as a woman who experienced five miscarriages and eventually managed to carry two pregnancies to term in part through progesterone supplementation, and who knows how hard it can be for women suffering from recurrent pregnancy loss in the UK to get prescribed progesterone on the NHS, it absolutely boils my piss that it is being prescribed to male people to allow them to feel more female.

Helleofabore · 20/10/2024 09:17

I am glad that we have had posts such as this.

Seeing as women make up half the population it is most people and also women aren't the only ones who go through the menopause

Because the hypocrisy and the support of these double standards are really shining brightly.

On one hand, we have the encouragement of inaccuracy, of near enough is good enough, in speech.

Seeing as women make up half the population it is most people.”. Sure a percentage over half the population is female. A very weak argument can be made that 50-51% can be said to be ‘most’!

But that is not what the ad said. It said ‘spend a third of their lives in menopause’. No. That is not an accurate statement for many reasons.

And then comes the hook, the pivot, straight after. Where the poster demands precision when it impacts them and their demanded language.

also women aren't the only ones who go through the menopause” like “ followed by “I'm not a woman but I'm pregnant, I menstruate and will more likely than not go through the menopause one day”.

So… it is ok for women who need this information to be dismissed with inaccuracies caused by this language usage but not for some people with a particular philosophical belief to be discussed using established language.

Because this is what destabilising established language to suit a small group of people with particular beliefs looks like. This is where we are.

The complete disregard this group has for anyone other than themselves needs to be amplified.

I am not a woman and I am very much pregnant

Pregnancy (and related bodily functions) is literally the only thing that only women can do and men can't.

I understand that some female people have debilitating sex dysphoria and want to live as much as possible as though they were male. I don't believe that people who voluntarily go through pregnancy and childbirth fall into this category.

Men can also have a menopause. These symptoms can interfere with everyday life and happiness. What's so shocking about that?

Menopause means the cessation of the menses ( menstruation). Men do not menstruate and therefore do not go through a menopause.

When medical bodies obscure the facts and engage in this sort of wilful stupidity in a bid to seem 'inclusive', people, such as yourself maybe, get confused too - and start to believe things that simply are not true.

Facts and clear language matters; certainly if you are engaged in medicine and/or science.
