Absolutely this.
When we are discussing biological conditions that affect one biological sex and not the other, gender identity does not matter.
And this is part of the reason that all of this has become such a problem.
The drive to push the use of gender identity where the only important identifier is biological sex is why so much frustration has occurred. Gender is irrelevant when discussing medical matters that have a biological basis. If the use of gender identity was used outside the medical sphere and wasn’t being used to try and replace biological sex, there would be far fewer objections. Its the inappropriate insistence of using gender when it’s completely irrelevant that is causing such consternation.
Quite frankly I don’t care how anyone identifies. Crack on and lead your best life. Be happy. Your gender identity is none of my business.
But you remain the biological sex that you were born as, and your desire to identify in a different way should not replace clear language around medical issues.
If you are pregnant, you are female. I understand you might not want to describe yourself as such if you have a different gender identity but the fact remains: you ARE female. Or as most of us would say, a woman. You are not a medical miracle. Only females, women, can be pregnant.
In supporting the obfuscation of clear language you are putting other people at risk. People who have English as a second language, individuals with poor literacy, and those with learning difficulties all need information that’s accessible. Clear, plain language is vital. Contorting medical language to assuage the feelings of a tiny minority actively jeopardises the health and well being of vulnerable groups.
But as per usual, none of that matters - as long as we include language to pacify individuals who want to ignore biological reality, then fuck all those other vulnerable people, right?
