This really isn't relevant since they aren't talking about anything like that, they are trying to talk about women stopping menstruation due to age.

What's happened here is they have very stupidly just slotted in "people" for "women" which changes the nature of the statistic substantially. And they don't seem to have understood that which is rather worrying for a medical organization.

How does it change the nature of the statistic? Most people are women.

Correction to my last post...

You are either deluded or a troll.

Either way it's not worth carrying on this conversation.

Errahstop · 20/10/2024 02:14

And so another trans bashing thread begins. Pathetic.

You are biologically female.
What gender (whatever that's supposed to mean) you consider yourself is irrelevant because only biological females get pregnant and go through menopause. Facts.

I can't say I understand but I can imagine how awful this site must be for trans people. I am constantly astounded about how nasty and narrow minded folk are here. I hope you know that in the real world, most people are willing to meet you where you are and judge you on the content of your character. The idea that Bupa can't say most people experience menopause, when most people.are women, is unbelievably precious.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 20/10/2024 02:26

I don't see how reasonable people would object to them at all saying 'women' and then adding a prominent note to the effect of "This also applies to transmen and non-binary people with biologically female bodies".

It's just silly and misleading to refer to 'all people' when you can only possibly mean approximately half of them - as well as playing fast and loose with the health care needs of people with learning difficulties, low academic backgrounds or non-native English speakers, who don't have the privilege of being able to sift through deliberately confusing and ambiguous, yet important, messages and understand what they REALLY mean and whether they may apply to them or not.

So we are to believe that anyone reading 'most people' will immediately assume that it DOESN'T apply to them? Nobody objects to them saying women...apparently lots of people object to them saying 'people'.

Christ on a bicycle. Do adult humans not know about male menopause? And do they post so confidently without a quick Google?

It's called andropause and it's nothing like menopause. There is no "male menopause." Using that term is trying to make an equivalency where it does not exist.

TempestTost · 20/10/2024 02:36

Errahstop · 20/10/2024 02:08

Barley. Not all women have normal menstrual cycles, or spend 1/3 of their lives in menopause though. It's pretty marginal to call such a tiny % over 50% "most" as well. If it were a vote that would be considered rather innacurate language.

But none of that is all that relevent, because I don't think it's what they meant. The statistics they were thinking if is about women. They've just been idiotic and decided to substitute "people" for women without realizing it fucks with the math.

Probably put together by some PR people who never went within 50 ft of a statistics class.

No, the absolute opposite.

People may be unnecessarily concerned and then clog up health care resources so that people to whom it DOES apply can be impeded.

Just like if, say, an advert urging people to check out their risk of sickle-cell anaemia advertised with "X% of British people could be at risk and should consider getting screened".

Without them making it clear that the X% of people they're targeting will be from ethnic minorities, that could easily lead to a whole load of worried white people like me going and asking to be checked, thus taking NHS time and resources in this area away from the people who genuinely need them.

Anyone who reads the information and recognises the symptoms in themselves should go to a doctor. I doubt they will be admonished unless the surgery is run by Mumsnet.

What?

Only a few groups are affected by sickle cell disease and they are pretty easy to define. Why not just say who they are?

Cattenberg · 20/10/2024 02:45

I’ve paid for private healthcare a couple of times and I’d avoid any provider which provided inaccurate, misleading health information.

Incidentally, my dental practice was taken over by BUPA a few years ago and it’s fair to say that the service isn’t as good as it used to be.

Grimgrump · 20/10/2024 02:45

ParentToAngelsAndOneOnTheWay · 20/10/2024 01:20

Okay but seeing as women aren't the only ones to go through menopause then what they are saying is correct

Males go through an age-related drop in testosterone. This is nothing like female menopause, because for one, the male reproductive system doesn’t shut down. And Male Hypogonadism is caused by intrinsic pathology of the hypothalamic–pituitary–testicular (HPT) axis. Again, not menopause.

Wanting medical information to be clear and accurate isn’t being precious. Some people have very little medical knowledge. Others have learning difficulties or a low level of literacy. Others speak English as an additional language. All deserve clear information from their healthcare providers. In some instances this could literally be a matter of life and death.

LOL

DH is an intelligent, highly educated man with a PhD in a STEM field. A few years ago he was concerned because he read an article on a website he thought reputable, accurate and reliable, and I had several of the symptoms of the condition. He suggested I go to the GP s as about it.

The website: BBC News
The article topic: Prostate cancer
The problem: they used the word 'people' instead of 'men'

Words matter. Language matters. Honesty matters.

JellySaurus · 20/10/2024 03:24

Not identifying with feminine stereotypes (or masculine ones) has no effect on your sex. If you are pregnant then you are either a woman or a girl. The fact that you don't want to believe that is your business, internal to you and nothing to do with others. Your denial of reality should not be forced upon others, no more than any ideology, religion or delusion should be forced on others.

SpidersAreShitheads · 20/10/2024 03:44

MrJeremyFisher · 20/10/2024 02:08

You are either a woman or not pregnant.

Absolutely this.

When we are discussing biological conditions that affect one biological sex and not the other, gender identity does not matter.

And this is part of the reason that all of this has become such a problem.

The drive to push the use of gender identity where the only important identifier is biological sex is why so much frustration has occurred. Gender is irrelevant when discussing medical matters that have a biological basis. If the use of gender identity was used outside the medical sphere and wasn’t being used to try and replace biological sex, there would be far fewer objections. Its the inappropriate insistence of using gender when it’s completely irrelevant that is causing such consternation.

Quite frankly I don’t care how anyone identifies. Crack on and lead your best life. Be happy. Your gender identity is none of my business.

But you remain the biological sex that you were born as, and your desire to identify in a different way should not replace clear language around medical issues.

If you are pregnant, you are female. I understand you might not want to describe yourself as such if you have a different gender identity but the fact remains: you ARE female. Or as most of us would say, a woman. You are not a medical miracle. Only females, women, can be pregnant.

In supporting the obfuscation of clear language you are putting other people at risk. People who have English as a second language, individuals with poor literacy, and those with learning difficulties all need information that’s accessible. Clear, plain language is vital. Contorting medical language to assuage the feelings of a tiny minority actively jeopardises the health and well being of vulnerable groups.

But as per usual, none of that matters - as long as we include language to pacify individuals who want to ignore biological reality, then fuck all those other vulnerable people, right?
