Most people huh? Did anyone tell the men?

What's the problem?

I don't have LinkedIn so I can't view this but do you mind elaborating on what the bupa ad has said that's problematic

Most people will not spend 1/3 of their lives in menopause since 'most people' includes men.

How can you not see that?

Well it’s not ‘most people’ is it? It’s most women.

Seeing as women make up half the population it is most people and also women aren't the only ones who go through the menopause

nocoolnamesleft · 20/10/2024 01:04

Men don't go through the menopause. Clearly they are talking about women. Avoiding the word is offensive.

KizzyDora · 20/10/2024 01:04

women aren't the only ones who go through the menopause

Wot?

SiobhanSharpe · 20/10/2024 01:07

Well, it's inaccurate as well as ridiculous.
'Most People' surely means most of the population and hence would include both men and women.

desiringtoremainsane · 20/10/2024 01:07

The irony of this being a campaign encouraging people to 'talk openly about the menopause'. Just not my mentioning its an experience that only women experience.

Men can also have a menopause. These symptoms can interfere with everyday life and happiness. What's so shocking about that?

JellySaurus · 20/10/2024 01:07

As not all women will reach menopause, how can less than 50% of people = "Most people will spend 1/3 of their lives in menopause"?

SallyForf · 20/10/2024 01:09

Christ must we always centre men even when talking about uniquely female health.

KizzyDora · 20/10/2024 01:10

No they don't. They don't have a menstrual cycle so can't possible go through menopause.

I'm not a woman but I'm pregnant, I menstruate and will more likely than not go through the menopause one day

Christ on a bicycle. Do adult humans not know about male menopause? And do they post so confidently without a quick Google?

JellySaurus · 20/10/2024 01:11

The 'men' in menopause does not refer to men. HTH.

KizzyDora · 20/10/2024 01:12

Aye.

SiobhanSharpe · 20/10/2024 01:12

Some men might experience some sort of emotional mid life crisis but it is in no way comparable to the menopause which is hormonal and manifests in both physical and emotional symptons. And it can't be alleviated by taking HRT.

desiringtoremainsane · 20/10/2024 01:12

Just stop with trying to change the meaning of words. As someone who is experiencing symptoms of perimenopause you can get in the bin with 'men can also have menopause' - no they can't, not now, and not ever. Stop with the linguistic gymnastics. Women cant identify out of it and men cant identify into it. Its so boring.

Eh? Do you know what menopause means? It's when your menstrual periods stop.

For something to stop, it has to have happened in the first place. No males will ever have a menstrual period, thus they will never experience menopause.

JellySaurus · 20/10/2024 01:13

Ah. Humpty Dumpty posters.

This thread's one for the lurkers.

50% of the population are female (approximately). this statistic is trying to say most of those 50% will spend 1/3 of
their life in menopause. That is not most people, their stat is wrong. It is only correct if over 66% of people, so 100% of women and more than 1/3 of men, spend 1/3 of their life in menopause. They don’t. If they issued this phrasing in an O level exam they’d have to issue a correction and apology and revise students marks.

You are wrong. It is absolutely hormonal and can be treated with HRT. A mid life crisis can happen to anyone and is not what people or professionals are referring to when they say male menopause or hypogonadism.
