Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Gender neutral language in pregnancy care

So I’m currently pregnant with my first and have been kind of low key annoyed with how common discussions around pregnancy and related topics remove to term woman or female (I.e birthing people). I started getting bugged by this during my trying to conceive phase and now it bugs me even more. I know it’s kind of a minor thing in the grand scheme of things but I needed to vent. Seriously going through TTC & pregnancy has made me about 10x more aware of how different physically women are.

I just had my baby and while I didn't notice too much pregnant people talk, I did have to register my newborn with the GP and was asked what her gender is on the form... male, female or non-binary 🤔
Surely for GP registration they should be asking about the sex at birth? Not what my 7 day old identifies as

So the definition of a woman is not based on biology? We agree!

Gosh the way you TRAs either twist words or don't understand plain language is painful to watch.

You know perfectly well that's not what was said. Exactly the opposite in fact.

Brefugee · 10/10/2024 11:18

Lady1ntheLake · 10/10/2024 10:56

This is a widely accepted fact.

This will probably get deleted but I'm tempted to say that pregnant women who still believe they're men as they literally doing the most womanly, not male thing possible can do one.

Their idiotic selfishness makes other women, of whom there are millions more, less safe.

I totally agree with this. I don't understand why someone who sees themself as a man will want to go through something so unique to women.

"Pregnant person" is not a more difficult term to understand than "pregnant woman."

For you.
Check your privelege.
It is Well documented that it causes harm.

Thanks to the TRA plants. Always helps shine the light in.

My social identity.

What does "woman" consist of as a social identity?

Pregnant person here. I’m very happy for that language to be used. It’s clear, direct, and factual, and in no way confusing or alienating. Claiming otherwise, in service of a political point, feels disingenuous.

You are a woman.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 10/10/2024 11:27

It's lunacy. Sorry but it is. Women, and only women, throughout history and around the world have given birth, and that hasn't changed. The fact that women who say they are now men have joined in doesn't change anything. All it's doing is pandering to the feelings of that tiny minority. What about the feelings of the majority? It's a wonderful superpower that women have, to grow a baby. 'Pregnant people' takes away that magic, and I hate it.

Brefugee · 10/10/2024 11:28

I was fired for being pregnant.
That doesn't happen to men...

DadJoke · 10/10/2024 11:33

The guidance generally say that the patient should be addressed with language they are happy with. If that's not the case, you should complain. If they are using birthing parent or chest feeding to you when you want mother and breast feeding, that's not right. I would be amazed if they do.

If you look online, expect inclusive language in many places. But sure, be annoyed by it if you like.

Ridiculous-I would have been do tempted to just put n/a or wtf, or maybe a smiley face.

That table of words to replace 'sexed terms' is fucking disgusting. How to erase women from pregnancy and childbirth completely.

It's not magical. It's a basic biological function.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/10/2024 11:42

That only women and girls are capable of.

Lady1ntheLake · 10/10/2024 11:40

It's not magical. It's a basic biological function.

I had 2 miscarriages, multiple haemorrhages and nearly died twice. I'd never spent a night in hospital other than gynecological issues.

The process of creating a new human being takes nine months and is beyond complex. A woman's body makes a new brain out of her own blood.

Piss off with basic. Breathing is basic biological behaviour, not gestating a new person.

We’re really worried that my male partner might be fired when his employer finds out I’m pregnant, as he’s entitled to, and plans to take, a long period of paternity leave.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/10/2024 11:47

He's not actually pregnant, though. It's not taken a toll on his own body. I agree he should be able to take the time off as a dad without being sanctioned. Do you have any reason to think he is likely to be fired?

Paganpentacle · 10/10/2024 11:47

Lady1ntheLake · 10/10/2024 10:10

How are you being asked to accommodate anyone? You’re free to call yourself whatever you like. You just don’t get to object when others refer to you as a person—unless you identify as something other than human?

Women WANT to be called WOMEN.
Not 'people'
Women's rights are no less than trans-rights.

I’ve struggled for years to get pregnant—facing multiple unsuccessful IVF cycles, painful miscarriages that required surgery, and now I’m going through a challenging, high-risk pregnancy.
