Everything might look a lot different once the result is in.

Interesting this wasn’t quoted from the link:

However, several MPs have told Guardian Australia the motion is unlikely to go ahead because the party room is unable to agree upon a candidate to replace Pesutto.

So they would replace him if they could agree? Not exactly a ringing endorsement of him, is it…

The text you are referring to is from an earlier version of the article - it is a continually-updated blog. In any case, this is the text:

However, several MPs have told Guardian Australia the motion is unlikely to go ahead because the party room is unable to agree upon a candidate to replace Pesutto.
Pesutto walked into his party room with members of his leadership team, Georgie Crozier, Evan Mulholland and David Southwick, and South West Coast MP, Roma Britnell.
He told reporters: “Back to work.”
The Berwick MP, Brad Battin, who has long been touted as a possible leader, was the first to arrive and said he had no plans to move a motion. Another contender, Nepean MP Sam Groth, said: “You’re all wasting your time.”
This doesn't sound like the Party Room was in doubt or having trouble finding contenders.

Disloyalty is frowned upon in political parties so you do not show your hand until you are sure of a win. It was no coincidence that John Major, who followed Margaret Tatcher, made sure he was nowhere near the scene when she was stabbed in the back.

Yes. An MP who may move for leadership when they have a firm chance of winning may very well (and I would think it highly likely) say 'I have no plans of moving a motion'. Meaning, 'today' I have no plans in moving a motion.

I would never take this to mean that they would not do so when they felt confident of winning the leadership position. Why on earth would they show their hand if they didn't think they would win yet?

The fact that there were MPs making noises about it is a sign that they are unhappy with the situation. Or they were doing this to apply pressure to get something else.

LongtailedTitmouse · 15/10/2024 18:28

An MP who thinks he has a fair chance of winning is unlikely to move a motion that would lead to his predecessors downfall. They would arrange for someone else to do so in a way that made it looked like they had nothing to do with it. They would want to be seen to be the ones flying in to save the day.

There were incidents and accidents.
There were hints and allegations.

Things may be clearer in a couple of months.

The bit that sticks in my mind is the sort of chorus: "Duuh duh duh Der, Duuh duh duh DER."

DH(to be) and I hired a car for a 6 week road trip around Europe between Uni and working for a living. I shoved Graceland into the CD player as we drove away from Calais and the CD player decided to keep it. I love Paul Simon but even I had had enough by the time we got back to Calais.

Did you have diamonds on the soles of your shoes when you got back?

Sadly not but I did really understand Gumboots.

Is it like when a football manager has a run of bad results but the board has full confidence in them?

BezMills · 16/10/2024 09:31

I think you have to show unity at all times, where possible. A divided party looks weak and ineffective.

What ideally happens is you stay in "Completely United Party Honest" as longa s possible, then spend as little time as possible in "We're Just Clarifying Who Is Now In Charge, Bear With Us" and move to "Completely United Party Honest, No Backstabbers Here" and pretend nothing much happened.

FeralWoman · 16/10/2024 10:42

Agree. Unity until the backstabbing. It’s how politics is done in Australia.

BezMills · 16/10/2024 10:47

I feel like it's the winning formula for any organisation of significant size, which finds its public image important.

So it hasn’t changed in the last few years then. Good oh! Didn’t think it would.

I cannot imagine any strategic politician declaring they are going to move a motion for leadership unless they were absolutely confident they had the numbers right then and there and were ready to go. Or as others pointed out, they might not even do it themselves.

Saying ‘I have no plans’ simply means I am not going to do anything today.

FeralWoman · 16/10/2024 12:18

Even in Queensland Steven Miles kept his mouth shut while he was Deputy Premier to Annastacia Palaszczuk. The media was claiming a leadership spill. Full denial from them all. He stood behind her, smiled, nodded, agreed. A few weeks later she stepped down and he became Premier. Officially she chose to resign because she was ready to move on to the next stage of her life. No knifing that we know of. However one of Miles’ first actions was to kill off the very unpopular and expensive multi billion dollar redevelopment of a beloved sports stadium (The Gabba) that had been Palaszczuk’s baby. It was dead within days. Bloody good choice too.

Case is back in court tomorrow. Not sure if it’s starting at 10:15am or a bit later.

Can't stay up this time, to hear the summing up, It'll be interesting to read the transcripts though. I'm not sure if I've got the gist of Pesutto's defence to this action, in amongst the days & days worth of word salad evidence, that he didn't defame Moira, she apparently did that all by herself, due to her associating with people who associate with people, who associate with or are sympathetic to Nazis.... Oh and the Liberal Party of Australia & their crack investigative team taking wikipedia, biased journalists, shonky "news" organisations and anyone else saying but she is a / associates with Nazi and that being quoted in print somewhere, anywhere, as gospel.

Also, she didn't run away, fast, when some men in black, wholly unconnected to the LWS Rally turned up, and fecked about on the steps of Parliament, doing Nazi salutes, all whilst neither the Police, TRAs or anyone else there turned tail and fled either.
