Speaking of dazzle camouflage, I noticed this garment last year - how to look like a small dazzle painted battleship at your next party.

My mum's cousin ( more like siblings) was a Lancaster bomber pilot in WWIi. He got the DFC, but was shot down over Germany and is buried there. He was 26.
So, so sad.

Dumbo12 · 08/10/2024 21:47

Please may I have a bucket large glass of gin? I have spent the day chain sawing wood for the fire and then had to whittle the foot of a wether, who had long toes and refused to walk, so foot trimmed and pain relief given. My back is getting fed up of me!

FuzzyPuffling · 08/10/2024 21:50

You sound like you deserve that gin@Dumbo12.
If I could do AI I'd draw you one!

Dumbo12 · 08/10/2024 21:53

@DeanElderberry that is very kind of you, AI is beyond me, my phone tells me it has it, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it!

Not too sure how you got in the bottle!. But I think you have to drink it all in order to get out

I look like a small battleship most days, but I'm working on it.

Unfortunately, despite my fondness for bacon, I fear that confronted by an actual living pig I would succumb to animal sentimentality and that would be it, piggie would be an honoured guest forever.

My little bacon eye joint from Lidl, thoughtfully packaged to look nothing like a person, went down nicely with chicken, peas, and roast potatoes - the Sunday dinner I didn't get round to cooking on Sunday.

It still has me to contend with...
<eyes knives>

I'm not a big fan of pigs. They smell, and also I once knew a child who was mangled by some as toddler when he fell into the sty. So don't be taken in by the whiffley noses. They have darkness in their hearts...

Also don't start me on planes. I was outraged a few years ago when I saw that an illustration of the Battle of Britain included a Lancaster.

@Dumbo12 - I seem to find myself watching videos from Nate the Hoof Guy, on FB - as he trims and treats cows' hooves. I don't know why I find it so satisfying to watch. Is it as satisfying to do (back issues apart)?

I saw the nurse for a chat about the diabetes yesterday - though it was a very swift canter through the highlights, because the surgery should have booked a double appointment, but didn't. I am feeling a bit less glum about it all - even a little hopeful. I was started on metformin, but that has upset my insides - I have inflammatory colitis so I wasn't surprised it upset that - so hopefully the GP will change me onto something with fewer side effects. I am guessing that metformin is the cheapest available drug for type 2 so that's their go-to drug, to start with, and they'd prefer people not to know about other, possibly more expensive options.

I've also bought myself one of those continuous glucose monitors you put on your arm, and it is interesting to see what happens after meals, and what makes my blood sugar spike.

Dumbo12 · 09/10/2024 12:07

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius
Sheep hoof is softer than cow or horse, so reasonably easy to cut with a knife. I don't have the benefit of a crush, so unless the sheep is being Co operative, which the wether is, wrestling is required. It isn't as dramatic as the "hoof guy" no infection pockets, thank goodness! I think he may have laminitis, so rest and pain relief is the plan.

MarieDeGournay · 09/10/2024 12:09

Good luck with all that, Woley! I hope they come up with something that fixes one thing without triggering another!

When you are a diabetic, you have to be careful trimming your toenails, so maybe you are subconsciously wishing for your own Nate the Hoof Guy?Smile

I've been AWOL from the Bluestocking for a bit, sorry chaps.

We had 3 French men here til 10 bloody pm last night doing the levelling of the terrace and they are back again to finish off today.

And as they took so bloody long, no paw prints as the majority of it had gone off by the time the cats got a look in.

Anyway I went out today and bought some new welly boots, crimson red they are. Fucking ace.

Right, who needs a top up?

lcakethereforeIam · 09/10/2024 12:34

The thread about GI being a meme took a turn into left vs right hand drive which led me down an ox-drawn rabbit hole. I hadn't realised until relatively recently (YouTube mudlarks rabbit hole) that they, like horses, were often shod. As, apparently, they struggle to stand on three legs various means were devised to lift them or even flip them over. How the world changes on inventions that I never would have considered important like the horse collar.

Eta

Could I have something long and cool? I know the Bluestocking makes its own cider. As we're in the swing of cider season can I have the leftover pulp for the pigs? I've had them in the woods around Peak Woo to eat the acorns but I think something sweet would be good for their flavour...health.

I wonder if they could be trained to find truffles?

Boiledbeetle · 09/10/2024 12:54

@lcakethereforeIam I watched Christopher Robin at the weekend. Not going to lie tears were shed by me. I just love piglet and his haycorns!

I'd still eat him though if push came to shove! Could you feed them some honey?

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius glad the appointment has helped eased your glumness x

<goes off to spy on lunch the cute little piggies>

lcakethereforeIam · 09/10/2024 13:02

Bugger, I meant to put something supportive for Woley but the oxen completely dragged me off track. I'm glad some of the clouds have lifted.

I think the piggies can have a lot of the stuff leftover from brewing. And mixing some honey or treacle in would be an excellent idea.

I need a picture of the boots. Red shoes are the business.

I've had to take them off as they were squawking on the wooden floor and woken the cat up and I got the stink eye.

I'm sure you're right about the metformin. I have Crohn's so it wouldn't be good for me, either - I think that was part of the reason I was allowed to try to get my numbers down without medication (that & the numbers being just over the limit). Have you used the pee-on sticks? They prescribed some for me as soon as they saw my first results & I used them but the colour didn't change once, & when I did my review, nursey was dismissive of them & told me not to bother - !? Left hand, right hand & all that.

Hope your innards are settling down. Would you recommend a particular monitor? I just try to be good* but sometimes think, 'Dammit' & tuck in a bit too much. It would be interesting to know what spikes what.

*Plain sourdough or Shredded Wheat for breakfast is a new low, but I do it for fear of the consequences.

Ooh, gorgeous! Love the drip effect around the top.

I got the horrified 'What are you doing? I can't believe you just disrespected my item!" look from the cat this morning, when I accidentally stepped backwards onto his new catnip bag.🙀😿😹

Re: the pigs, I once heard a farmer on the radio talking about how he raises his pigs in the happiest & most luxurious of circumstances & then, so as not to stress them out & toughen the meat at the last minute, when it's time to say goodbye he takes one out to a beautiful bit of woodland & as the pig surveys the view & feels all's right with the world, he blows the mother away.

I bought a pair of rigger boots less than 2 years ago and they didn't last.

I have high hopes for these. I just want dry feet again when I am in the garden.
