John Lewis 'allows trans women into bra-fitting rooms' as retailer hit by furious gender row

High street giant John Lewis is at the centre of a furious row amid claims its controversial trans policies put the safety of female staff and customers at risk, it can be revealed.

The retail group is facing claims its inclusive transgender policies – claimed to have been unilaterally imposed on staff – are "dangerous" and relegate women to "second class employees".

Lesley Pickup, who quit her job as a "selling partner" in John Lewis' Cheadle branch, allowed her resignation letter to be published on TV comedy writer and women's rights campaigner Graham Linehan's Substack platform, "The Glinner Update". In her letter, she insisted "female colleagues live in fear of dismissal if they speak out".

Ms Pickup said that for the past 20 years, she had been "involved with female victims from all faiths, cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds who have been subjected to domestic and sexual violence and psychological abuse by men".

For some, she said, work offered "the only time in their lives where they should have guaranteed female-only safe spaces free from the demands of men regardless of who those men claim to be".

The reply will be very interesting. If they take issue with BBB being at all representative, they will be inundated with proof.

They could look at the staff Pride magazine they published in February and then had to remove. Maybe that's what Baroness Nicholson is basing her caricature accurate picture on.

i'm sure this is one of the rules of misogyny. Calling out men's behaviour is worse than the behaviour itself.

Should John Lewis doubt their existence, photos, blogs, tweets and articles of hundreds of BBBs are but a click away.

You can call out people’s behaviour without descending to the level of sounding like a nutty rant.

And no, @PollyDactyl it doesn’t give me ‘hurty feels’. As I say, it’s just that the offensive slurs and jibes undermine any point she might be trying to make.

The best argument Baroness Nicholson makes in that letter is for reform of the upper house.

I think what she's trying to do here is avoid the usual response from those unfamiliar with this demographic that so-called "transwomen" have "been through so much" and have "made enormous sacrifices" to be their "authentic selves" and have all had their penises amputated.

She is pointing out that most so called "transwomen" are what we would, just a few years ago, have called crossdressers or transvestites, and everyone was fully aware that their motivation for cross-dressing was sexual. Beer bellied, balding Bianca is a transvestite. He has a penis and has no intention of changing that.

Nice that the tone police have turned up to scold women for being unprofessional when calling attention to safeguarding failures - because that really is the main issue, isn't it?

I’m not ‘scolding women’ if that’s directed at me. I’m pointing out that if she wants to be taken seriously, and have a discussion with the CEO of JL (which is what would actually benefit those posters who are upset by the JL policy) looking like a nutty rant isn’t the way to go about it, and it’s below the office she’s representing.

And yet funnily enough Baroness Nicholson's letter did achieve the desired result. And in double-quick time. She knows what she is doing.

If you're going to get offended on anyone's behalf, how about the women and girls that these men are larping and whose privacy, dignity and safety is being compromised?

In the first letter, which is where BBB made his appearance, Baroness Nicholson asked for a copy of the JL trans inclusion policy. She got it.

Perhaps you could offer consulting services to the House of Lords on a pro bono basis...

Yes, you are scolding, as you've done on other threads. Derailing the conversation by 'helpfully' pointing out that if women were just a bit nicer, politer, more professional in tone, yadda yadda yadda, we'd not have these problems.

You're missing the point. We've gone beyond pretending that this is about an oppressed minority who just want to pee, change, etc.

The type of man who wants to go into the bra fitting at John Lewis is absolutely your common or garden BBB. In other words a man with autogynephilia. BBB is the reality, not a slur.

The Baroness isn't noted for beating about the bush and personally I think it's a very effective move on her behalf.

If John Lewis even has half the reaction you've had, the obvious next step is to show them.

Because as I said, the Internet is awash with BBBs. Let John Lewis be faced with endless online pictures of these men posing in their underwear, then deny that they're not sexually motivated.

She's not a man, Elle, so she can't "mansplain". She's entirely reasonable to give this man, who is a man, advice based on women's rights.
