Vaishnavi Sundar's long awaited documentary that was three years in the making, is having a worldwide premiere on the 30th of August, 7pm UK time.

Behind The Looking Glass is a feature-length film about the lives of women whose partners have/want to medically transition.

This is the link for the premiere:

I watched the film last night and found it both deeply moving and incredibly infuriating. I hope this film is widely viewed and discussed.

So much under the radar lobbying work done by various NGOs over the last few decades has caused legislators and justice systems in many countries to undermine the ability of women to flee these abusive men, undermined their ability to name these men as abusive, and to maintain their own boundaries and to protect their children. The deleterious effect this is having on the children of these men is also hugely ignored by wider society.

I’m very surprised that YouTube hasn’t attached some sort of ‘unbiased information’ box for the Trevor Project or GLAAD to the video - I’ve been seeing these information boxes under a lot of YT videos to do with the Cass Report and GC content in general.

Please if you've enjoyed the film, do "like" it on Youtube. It decreases the likelihood of it being taken down.

'YouTube has already told us we won’t get any ad revenue out of the film. Apparently our film is ‘not suitable’ for advertisers.'

Haven't had time to watch yet, but just liked it (5000 likes so far).

YT has been pushing clapback or response videos to me since watching the documentary. This is even when I enter the exact name of the film, it's several places down the list.

I appreciate how cautious everyone has to be about this documentary. Andrew Gold seems to have been quite shocked at what happened to him after the podcast with Ritchie Herron that so far has 1.4M views.

This documentary is so important.

I definitely had an ad while I was watching it. I remember because I had rather assumed the above would be the case

Chariothorses · 06/09/2024 08:41

Just a reminder the BBC is currently doing a review of their portrayal of the sex and gender issue, deadline for responses 27th Sep.

DialSquare · 06/09/2024 09:16

Just finished it (while I'm supposed to be working!). Wow. So very powerful.

Many of us comment on how strange it is that these men seem to want you to look like their wives but one of the women's comments made a lot of sense. She said you just become a mirror for them to validate themselves.

Also Tinsel taking about the reporter asking if she thinks he's happier now. That infuriated me too.

YouTube will still run ads during a demonetised video, they just refuse to share the revenue generated by the ads with the video’s creator. It’s basically punishment for wrongthink and wrongspeech (criteria for which is decided by mods at YouTube).

Dumbledoreslemonsherbets · 06/09/2024 18:11

So the modding at youtube is biased against women then (discrimination based on sex)?

Andrew Gold has a video about his experience of being demonetised for the Ritchie Herron podcast.

Wtf?! How is that legal?

UtopiaPlanitia · 06/09/2024 19:37

I’ve no idea how it’s legal but I know the reasons given to video creators for demonetisation is usually that the video contains hate speech or misinformation.

ghostofadog · 06/09/2024 20:51

Youtube seem to be making it very difficult to find this, some commentary videos come up but you have to click through them to get to it so you wouldn't necessarily know there was a full length film. Link for anyone who hasn't seen it yet

What a moving film.
So good to hear these tenacious and strong women talking.

Fantastic film. So moving. I wonder how it can get more coverage and reach?
Well done Tinsel and all others who contributed and given sunlight to this abuse and obliteration of women and children's voices.

Yeah, I noticed that when I searched for it by name on Youtube, I got a screenful of response videos but not the actual documentary. I actually had to go outside Youtube and google for it with the name + YouTube and then I could find it.

It's a massive issue that many of these TRAs work in tech and are ever-so-powerful on the internet, and the internet is now our main means of communication and spreading information.

Catsmere · 07/09/2024 22:52

When I searched for it, having forgotten the title, I got the documentary about the making, with the actual film in the side panel. Haven't seen TRA stuff pushed yet, but I'm used to ignoring YT's recommendations.

I had wondered why there was so much screeching about the term 'transwidow' on X over the last few days.
