I was going to watch a snippet and then bookmark for another evening, but I became completely engrossed and just finished watching the whole film.

Wow - amazing. Great to have such a good film about something we should have heard more about. The bit about the old 'guidance manual' for psychiatrists telling how wives and wives-to-be should be managed was eye-opening.

Yes, and the agony aunt advice 😳

I've always said it was Marjorie Proops fault that I ended up in the situation I was in.

If there's typos, I've had a lot of Prosecco.

It is one hell of a powerful film. It is about time the world learns about the abusive nature of these relationships.

Dadhouse · 30/08/2024 23:19

I've been on Mumsnet since it was all fields, and I'm very proud of the huge amount of support it has been to so many over the years. Pleased to hear it positively name checked.

I cried most of the way through that. It was so powerful and brave. My XH was an abuser in every way especially sexually by forcing me to participate in his xcross dressing and bdsm fetish. It was mostly by cohesive methods but occasionally physical when that didn't work. He was abusive to the kids and they were terrified of him. My biggest regret is I didn't see it (boiled frog) until he really ramped up abuse of DD as she started puberty. I went to Women's aid as I thought he "might" have been abusive towards her. I now realise that was because he was so jealous of her growing into the women he longed be. It still took 2.years for me to get out with women's aid help. When XH wasn't eating sleeping or working he was shut in his office watching porn. No one dared go in there or touch his computer. He is now transitioning and told my eldest his behavior towards us was due his frustration on living a lie (kids knew nothing about the xdressing) My eldest was the last of the kids to go no contact after seeing a psychologist who helped them to finally stop having anything to do with their father due to FOG (fear obligation and gulit) One of my kids was sexually abused (not by thier father I'd left him by then) They also saw a psychologist. Of course what happened with thier father also came out during the sessions and they had EDMR for PTSD due to that and the sexual assault as part of the therapy. Sorry that was so long but that film really clarified a lot of things Thank you so much to tinsel and all who put it together ❤️

One thing I didn’t understand was who the male writer was, and why he was in the film. If there was an explanation, I missed it.

Livinginaclock · 31/08/2024 07:56

What amazing, strong women, everybody needs to watch this.

Now nearly 14,000. I'm just about to watch it for the second time. It's powerful and beautifully done.

Remember to like the film and add a comment (just emojis will do) it helps to get it circulating.

Derrick Jensen

He was in it, in the fetching Canada Goose jumper. He didn't write it.

He spoke about speaking up and presumably being cancelled but it wasn't very clear what had happened.

It said “Writer” under his name during his interview, like it said “journalist” under Helen Joyce’s name. I didn’t understand why he was in the film.

My post didn’t say that he was one of the writers of the film. Just that I didn’t understand why he was in it.

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 31/08/2024 10:05

Thank you will watch with interest!

I think what he said about being the first through the door and getting shot but he was much later going through the door but was still shot was an interesting analogy. He was describing the atmosphere in which people who tried to discuss the impact of 'trans rights' were cancelled and villified. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derrick_Jensen

Thank you Arabella. I think we're all still not 100% healed 14 after years of escaping

LoobiJee · 31/08/2024 10:20

Thanks lovelyview, I’d never heard of him. According to that Wikipedia entry, he seems like quite the maverick, and apparently his eco activism group was denounced for saying TWANW as far back as 2012.

Never miss an opportunity to post this:

Very good. Every day's a school day. And those were a majority of women's voices trying to shout him down 🤮
