She could have put this to bed by sharing DNA tests. I'm struggling to feel sympathy, although it must be horrid.

Watching Matthew pinset on bbc. He knew exactly what was going on.

I thought that segment was VERY interesting.

He was tactful but spelt it out to those who understood.

duc748 · 11/08/2024 23:14

Yes, he'd clearly given some thought to exactly what he was going to say, and how he was going to say it, in advance.

wrongthinker · 11/08/2024 23:28

duc748 · 11/08/2024 22:52

I thought it was more a case of "Yes, she's XY. And had male levels of testosterone (until we reduced them a bit). But she's still a woman, according to this definition of a woman that I just made up in my head".

There's no such thing as an XY female.

The people who are fooled by this are insane. And the people who aren't fooled but pretend to believe it are MRAs.

Catsmere · 11/08/2024 23:33

MRAs and TRAs, same thing. Male supremacists.

"XY females/women" was the story I was seeing from as soon as this became a story (complete with people telling everyone to educate themselves on this condition they'd only heard of today). People hear that "biological sex is complicated" and assume there must be a lot they can't grasp.

Catsmere · 12/08/2024 02:49

They never hear that the "complicated" cases are extreme outliers. The vast, vast majority of people are simply XX or XY, and the men with DSDs are only prevalent at things like the Olympics because coaches etc go looking for them to foist on women's events. Cheating all the way.

This is so true. People talk of human sex being a spectrum, but it's not - it's binary, male and female, with a tiny minority of people who have medical disorders.

The people with DSDs who end up at the Olympics are always framed as "women with DSDs", when they're actually men with DSDs. Even if they genuinely believe with all their heart that they're women with a condition, ultimately biology and science needs to take precedence over feelings - women are generally at a physical disadvantage to men in terms of strength, etc, that's why we have segregated categories in the first place.

The IOC have really fucked this up. It'll be interesting to see what happens going forward, because we're already seeing males with DSDs - a tiny, tiny percentage of people - massively overrepresented in women's sport, getting podiums. If this isn't resolved, then it'll send out the message to Olympic committees across the world that they need to hunt out people with these conditions if they want medals, killing sport for boring old biological women.

Twistybranch · 12/08/2024 11:05

Where has the case been filed?

Depends the legal system on whether if it’s the boxer that has to prove it’s a lie or those that called them a man can prove that it’s true.

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 12/08/2024 12:21

If someone were harassing me online with a lie, I'd probably claim libel as well as harassment.

Interesting that khelif hasnt... 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️

I think that’s quite snide, I wouldn’t either if I was them, just so people can get kicks out of their private medical information.

@Frasers
"I think that’s quite snide, I wouldn’t either if I was them, just so people can get kicks facts out of their private medical information."
(Fixed that for you.)

When there is public domain information that your biology may convey unfair advantage and possibly undue harm, and you are in receipt of an international world class gold medal having taken advantage of such biology - I'm afraid your 'private' medical information becomes very much public interest.

If Khalif worked in a shop in Algiers and was not a boxer no one would be the slighted bit interested in their medical information.

You all are not real women

How do you know this Helen hun, have you been peeking at our passports?

I’ll be putting a sticker with ‘Tortoise’ on my passport. Is there a tortoise race anywhere? I’ll be the fastest tortoise in the west. East, south, and north, too. Just a difference in my chromosomes (and species). But what is biological fact when it is inclusion that matters.

Mainstream media, yes agreed.

Normal people, much less so (although TBF much as I strive not to have a twitter echo chamber I do block outright misogynists).

I don't do politics on FB cos it upsets some men in California.

I have a lot of catching up to do on this thread but I just wanted to acknowledge this comment written yesterday from @OuterSpaceCadet.

With regards the AI stuff, I'd be very careful about relying on AI detectors for text. They are notoriously unreliable
That said, I was curious about what people were saying on FB about this and looked up the Olympics boxing tag.
It threw up multiple instances of people saying the same thing. See collage. My phone only let's me combine six screenshot but there were more than that.
Ever since I looked at those, my FB has been littered with these in my recommends and suggested posts. All the same kind of language and length of text. I'm not sure who's churning them out but it's definitely interesting

I didn't use any sort of detector, it was completely obvious that someone used AI to write that. And the poster appears to have vanished now.

What is it with you saying ‘he’ when SHE a woman? I don’t understand how you can be so horrible! she IS A WOMAN not a transsexual a WOMAN. she is from Algeria under Algeria law they do not recognise ANYONE changing their gender so her gender has NOT been changed her dad came out and provided proof of documents everything to show she is female. What is it with everyone? Lies have been spread and everyone is so quick to believe it. Just because she looks like a man does not mean she’s a man. Do more research.

Do more research.

But have you done research? If you look at some excellent articles explaining DSDs posted over the last week, you can understand how a child born in Algeria some years ago with a certain DSD would be understood, from the baby’s body formation, to be female by those around, yet ultimately go through male puberty - because they are essentially male.

This would mean it gave them a physical advantage over females in the boxing competition as well as be a danger to them..

You say, Just because she looks like a man does not mean she’s a man. Likewise, just because she looked like a girl at birth, it does not mean her body inside (DNA, chromosomes, hormones) was female.

There's a meme that shows Putin phoning up Kim Jong Un and laughing about the latest issue in the US. I've seen it with many variations, but one that sticks in mind is the one with R. Levine and the non binary staffer that ended up arrested for stealing women's luggage. It makes me wonder how much this issue is being driven by bot farms.

Sorry, wasn't pointing at you particularly. Someone screenshot a detector somewhere upthread. I agree its likely it is AI though!

Rough translation of original document posted on another thread with some paraphrasing.

After the time for sports, comes the time for justice.

Having just won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, the boxer Imane Khelif has decided to begin a new fight, a fight for justice, dignity and honour.

Madame Khelif has filed the complaint for aggravated online harassment to Paris prosecutors.
The investigation will determine who was behind this misogynist, racist and sexist campaign, but will also have to concern itself with those who fed the online lynching.
The iniquitous harassment to which the boxing champion had been subjected will [persist?] as the greatest [free translation: shameful] stain on these Olympic Games.

Best efforts with some freedoms.

Edited

Wont this lawsuit mean the boxer will have to disclose their biological state?
Truth is a defense after all

Fariha31 · 12/08/2024 18:15

I thought including a country currently committing genocide was the biggest stain on these games. but no, its people being mean to a man while he is screwing over women, coz thats worse

The action is about online harassment, not other matters. So, not necessarily.

And, yes. Online harassment is wretched. I've no understanding of the law in France nor how successful the legal support would be for such an action.

Was thinking about this - surely khelif can only claim harassment if he was personally targeted - ie if people tagged his social media accounts and bombarded his DMs? Otherwise, it’s all in the ‘market square’ and he was not obliged to listen to it? If he wants to comment on things said about him then it is a conflict with freedom of speech - unless what is being said is untrue (ie libel/slander depending on written or recorded video and spoken). And we know it’s not untrue.

Additionally, he could have locked his social media accounts to block it anyway, so I find it hard to understand what the legal basis of his complaint is?

His email was divulged - so it could be people targeting him that way

Missed that - in which case the rest of us can sigh in relief!!

Although I guess my point stands - delete the email but sue the organisation that leaked it for GDP/Data privacy. And let the police wherever investigate the malicious communications of individual email senders, assuming there is some international law/agreement that allows this to be done?

duc748 · 12/08/2024 19:17

If people sued every time someone slagged them off on the internet, JKR would be keeping lawyers in clover for decades! But in this case, can't see any legal action amounting to much.
