The original premises are getting crowded, we need to expand.

Welcome all women, and well behaved animals.

Edith,I use bicarb and use sour milk with spelt flour for scones.

Ta. Let's see how it goes....
Given that the Bad Bread Pixies are living in my kitchen at the moment, I'm not holding out too much hope.

DeanElderberry · 17/08/2024 08:09

I use natural yogurt and bicarb for scones, but intend to get some cream of tartar and add a little of that as I'm told it helps the rise. Recently I also tried following the blasphemous suggestion of a woman on the radio and left my scones to rest for half an hour on the baking tray before putting them in the oven, and to my astonishment they really did seem to rise better.

I'm still a little horrified and fear my mother's or grandmothers' ghosts seeing what I did. Does the bluestocking have a strong female ghost or two?

Just nipping in to leave a convenient beer mat as a place marker for the new thread! Back later to get properly settled in

It might not be safe for someone with Coeliac disease - I'm allergic to wheat but not Coeliac - spelt still has gluten, just a different, less problematic for some of us, form.

Thanks for the warning.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2024 00:12

That was a quiet Sunday. Hope that means we were all happily occupied elsewhere.

@DeanElderberry I think if I tried that I too would have the ghosts of my Nanna and my mum hovering in a very disapproving manner, scones are quick make foods😁

DeanElderberry · 19/08/2024 07:50

You think scones are quick make, I was always taught that, our mothers, our grandmothers, our great grandmothers - but yet - I thought what the woman on the radio said was worth trying and it worked.

I think it was Agnes Bouchier-Hayes, who is someone I'd be inclined to listen to even when she's being deeply heretical, but don't want to state it's definitely her in case I'm wrong. Not something to accuse a person of when they're innocent.

EdithStourton · 19/08/2024 09:29

Cheese scones on the side on the dining room, made with spelt flour and lots of cheddar.

Away with ye, temptress! Grin I've sadly realised in the last few years that my size, sex and age mean I really can't be eating three meals a day or carby snacks unless doing some serious walking. I might just sit near those and inhale while I finish my second morning mug of tea.

Do you want to take a slow amble up Peak Woo, or take the funicular then a slow amble back? I think Colin would come along.

ColinTheDachshund · 19/08/2024 10:05

<woof! Woof! Wag, wag, wag>

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/08/2024 10:23

Just place marking. Hello everyone!

CobwebCorner · 19/08/2024 10:28

Is there room in the reading nook? There's a fascinating thread I need to catch up on
Who doesn't want to know more about palaeolithic female art?

Oh yeah! Beautiful! D'you put mustard in the mix?

FuzzyPuffling · 19/08/2024 15:16

We've had the two smallest grandchildren for a few hours. Please may I have a quiet sit down, aka collapse in a heap?

Those cheese scones look like just what I need....

ifIwerenotanandroid · 19/08/2024 15:25

... fans @FuzzyPuffling gently with a copy of The Bluestocking Gazette...

Cayenne.

And @Dumbo12 they were (past tense!) as delicious as they looked. Fuzzy had the last one.

I can announce that I have driven the Bad Bread Pixies from the kitchen. I have made a lovely loaf. It has replaced the scone plate, and there is honey...

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/08/2024 17:07

I've been out with my neighbour and she bought a marmalade drizzle cake, which looks like it ought to be pretty good, so we'll along in a little while to share.

Bannedontherun · 19/08/2024 17:13

Hiya forgot to mention my return, was busy with family stuff. can i have a gi please and a selection of Tapas. Thanks.

MarieDeGournay · 19/08/2024 17:25

'can i have a gi please'
Sorry, you're 79 years too late, USAF Badley Fuckitt closed in 1945 and they've all gone homeGrin
[ that's a cruel use of a typo, I admit, just couldn't resist it Bannedontherun. Drinks are on me, OK?]

lcakethereforeIam · 19/08/2024 17:40

Fresh bread with lots of butter and just enough marmite. Thank you 😊

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/08/2024 16:52

Argh - am with relatives who think JKR wants all trans people to cease to exist and the whole thing is blown out of proportion. Have had a somewhat heated discussion before moving the conversation into areas which wouldn't raise my blood pressure. I still think I am right, but won’t push more for the sake of family harmony.

Please send one of the seagulls with gin and Valium.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/08/2024 17:17

Steve can bring some gin, Kevin can follow at a safe interval afterwards.

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 22/08/2024 17:26

I'm pleased to see the seagulls have their uses.
