"Imane Khelif has always defined herself as a woman"

And Muhammad Ali may have always defined himself as a welterweight, but...

Funny that it's not something neutrally verifiable like.... doping test results... or... a chromosome test. I self-ID as someone who is not a cheat

Look at this bit:

"I’m no expert on boxing regulations [NO SHIT], nor on the rules of the IOC [DITTO], but, as a martial artist myself, this much is clear [AH YES, THE WORD POLITICIANS USE WHEN THEY KNOW THEY'RE TALKING BOLLOCKS]: once both athletes had entered the ring, the time for contesting gender was over. [REALLY? WHAT ABOUT WHEN ONE OF THE ATHLETES IS INJURED? OR KILLED? ARE WE ALLOWED TO CONTEST 'GENDER' THEN OR ARE WE STILL EXPECTED TO SHUT UP ABOUT IT?]"

Still, knowing jack shit about fuck all has never been a barrier to writing an opinion piece on women's sports in the Guardian, as we saw just the other day when Barney Ronay demonstrated he couldn't count the number of male chromosomes (yes, that's one if anyone's interested).

As a martial artist, he should know that competitions are delineated by sex and (to an extent) by age. My late husband took up karate in his late 50s and got his black belt at the age of 64. He competed in the senior men's competitions - not against women or children.

BreatheAndFocus · 08/08/2024 20:49

Passports and other irrelevant nonsense, like "Imane Khelif has always defined herself as a woman, and has every right to compete—no matter what J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk have to say about it." BTW I wonder about "always defined herself as a woman". I wonder if, like Caster Semenya, this isn't really true

I wondered that too. Every photo of IK I’ve seen looks like they’re not ‘living as a woman’, as they’d say. We had all this crap with CS - and then finally the photos came out, eg CS wearing the boys school uniform and looking every bit a young man; CS on the beach in only swimming trunks, etc.

I heard a new one today. Apparently Angela had a nose job two weeks before the Olympics and that is why her nose broke so easily.

That's absolute rubbish, she wouldn't be boxing two weeks after that. Even if she'd had it cauterised, it would be 3 to 4 weeks.

LiveInTheLandAndDoGood · 08/08/2024 21:00

Interesting Twitter thread here with video of Khelif sitting in a very male posture, with a lower vocal range than being used in Paris. And the translation indicates he's using male language to refer to himself. x.com/sif30000/status/1820040398959448284

Dr Hilton on Andrew Gold now. Obviously it should be available after it is finished. Hopefully on that link.

Info on DSDs, the history of the IOC and IBA fall out and lots of other info.

Edited

This is really excellent. Thanks for sharing.

If you look at the images provided, you will see that several of the Thai boxers wear male clothing and generally present as 'males' in everyday life. It is not just that they have masculine bodies when boxing.

Ooh. I missed Messina’s daft accusatory post as I haven’t been online much today.

I’m guessing Messi hasn’t actually met any Kathoey/Ladyboys because otherwise Messi would know that Kathoey are extremely feminine males who definitely wouldn’t want to be on a televised boxing match masquerading as masculine-looking females!

Masculine and Feminine = Gender/Gender Expression
Male and Female =‘Sex

Masculinity isn’t the exclusion factor for a female category, maleness is.

Kathoey Mui Thai kick-boxer Noom Tung happily fought other males for the majority of Tung’s career and certainly never sought to conceal their biological sex from opponents, male or female (and the handful of fights against women were late career exhibition bouts with pre agreed opponents, not tournaments with medal prizes)

Mmmnotsure - the little blue link on your copy/pasted article left me momentarily concerned that Wired had employed an actual science writer to come up with that bizarre guilt-trippy article, so I looked up Paulo Armelli’s prior journalistic output. Google gave me 3 articles total, the other 2 are about kids film Inside Out 2 and Nicole Kidman’s daughters.

To paraphrase Donald Trump, Wired ‘don’t seem to be sending their best’.

Betcha thought those were words you'd never say! 😀

ChaChaChooey · 09/08/2024 03:33

Well, I still wouldn’t vote for him (luckily I’m not American so not stuck between that particular rock and hard place) but he does come out with some extremely quotable lines from time to time!

(my kids and I all write ‘covfefe’’ in the little reference box when we send each other bank transfers. I don’t know who started it but it stuck!)

Rumour has it that they are banning footage of the “rabbit punch” on TwiX and on facebook they are banning the #xx hashtag. They know they can’t justify their policy so now they need to shut down the debate.

@lcakethereforeIam " That's not Kellie's video, that's Esra Yildiz Kahraman. She lost to Lin Yu Ting, another one of the XY boxers, last night."
Ah, okay, sorry :-). Not following TV reporting, so I am not able to recognize the athletes right away.
Still, Esra clearly has something to say...

Can confirm the #xx is banned on facebook, posts incliuding it are temporarily hidden.

Oh my god, the BBC have written an intelligent article that actually sets out the case critically with very little woo 😱🥳

Plus Dr Emma Hilton has contributed!

Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif

What does science tell us about boxing’s gender row?

Research is shedding light on different chromosomal make-ups and what advantages they may bring to sport.
