@Shortshriftandlethal where did you read which other boxers had been banned by the IBA?

I don’t know that any have. I think the PP means other boxers who have been the subject of speculation on here.

Motorina · 07/08/2024 21:24

@CaveMum blimey!

Apparently 5 "female" boxers have been banned by the IBA due to failing chromosome testing, but I haven't seen any suggestion that the other 3 are at the Olympics.

OMG how is this not news. I don't follow boxing, or sport at all really, and until this thread I was completely unaware that more than 2 of the "female" boxers might be male. And now I can't unsee it. Are there more?

I had a look at the Judo athletes after reading Sharon Davies' tweet that @CaveMum posted and did a bit more googling. Obviously photos from the internet are in no way conclusive, but I am suspicious that the issue is much more widespread than is being reported.

BBC story at www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/clywv0y7vgeo has full footage of the fight and, in the last few seconds, shows the X. I am astonished they didn't cut it!

DuesToTheDirt · 07/08/2024 21:50

They should just bring back the sex testing for all athletes, at the start of the games. Sorted.

Listen to the cheer as she does the double x! 😮
The crowd aren't as captured as other footage might suggest

Brilliant women.

And it only needs to be done once per lifetime per athlete - unlike drug testing. Get tested at your first Olympics - or an internationally agreed test which covers the World Championships and Olympics - and you’re covered for the rest of your career.

It would in a short matter of time end the issue completely because scouts who have been prepared to exploit this loophole will know it’s pointless.

And then they can actually put their energies into scouting for women to train and support.

biddyboo · 07/08/2024 22:02

I thought it was interesting that the presenter stopped talking when she did the X sign. I don't think he knew what to say 😄

It's really heartening.

Snowypeaks · 07/08/2024 22:06

Looking at that BBC footage, he's even more obviously a man than Khelif, IMO.

Bobblebottle · 07/08/2024 22:10

And just like that, two men have made it to the women's final. Are we allowed to say there's a chance they might have an advantage now?

duc748 · 07/08/2024 22:12

Paradoxically, I hope they both win (as seems likely). The sunlight will be massive, and if one of them was to lose, you can imagine the response from some quarters.

My oh walked in at the end and said "that's clearly a bloke".

There’s been less vocal support at Lin’s bouts, the most vocal crowds have been at Imane’s fights. Suspect it’s simply a matter of there being more Algerian supporters present.

I can see what you mean for a couple of them, but you can’t judge by a single passport photo that are never flattering and may well have been through filters. Particularly if someone doesn’t fit gender stereotypes or ideas of femininity. Bring back cheek swab testing for all entrants into a female category and it will stop all of this speculation.

The NYT newsletter finally referred to "the Algerian boxer" in a link to a story without comments enabled: Boxing: The Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, the subject of a global frenzy regarding her gender over the last two weeks, will fight in the gold medal bout.

Algerian boxer Khelif advances to gold medal round

Khelif is into the Olympic final, set for Friday at Roland Garros. One step from a gold medal.

The IOC must be fuming at this after all they love to control the media etc.

Well done to these women, I hope more do it in the coming days XX

I'm day-dreaming about all of the female fighters doing it on the podium...

ScribblingPixie · 07/08/2024 22:38

The Esra Kahraman picture will get media coverage because she is so attractive. That's the level of sports journalism we're dealing with here.

The matches weren't even close, either. The women were overwhelmed.

(Clearly they just needed to train harder...)

When the Bulgarian boxer made the X symbol, it was quite subtle, so probably easier for the commentators to ignore. Some eagle-eyed people spotted it and started sharing the pic. But there was no mistaking the protest she was making tonight. It was great 😃 I really hope more female athletes do it. It's so effective.
