It will be fudged. The IOC will simply declare that Khalif is female, as per the passport. They will have a huge swell of support from all the LGBTQ++ factions that have basically suppressed any debate around this topic over the years.

It may even become common knowledge that Khalif is XY, but after some of the comments I have read recently on twitter and my own Facebook post, even that will be misconstrued as a woman with a DSD, rather than a man with a DSD, and EVEN THEN I would predict that many will be swayed by emotional stories of oppression of the LGBT community and gender non conforming women in Algeria and the wider world.

Until it is very plainly made clear that Khalif is a man, that will be the direction the commentary goes over the next few months, I predict.

Watching the matches this evening, I was really struck by the quality of the last two compared to Khalif's match. The boxing was obviously another level of skill and talent. Khalif can just barge through that with superior strength and size and noone seems to notice the huge difference.

I can guarantee that noone else I know will have watched all three matches. If they had, they might have noticed it too.

I don't think that Erik Schenigger was formally stripped of his gold, though he did offer to give it to the silver medallist.

When his true sex was discovered it was apparently a shock to him.

The best we could hope for would be a concise press release by the IBA giving the facts.
This should be written by a doctor who actually knows and understands the issues and who can analyse the test results and put them into context.
I swear the women on this site could sit an exam in DSDs and their effects.

The BBC News website is full-on Khelif-is-a-woman-full-stop, but some of the accompanying photos suggest that whoever chooses the photos isn't quite as convinced...

I know the BBC has form for this kind of poor and skewed reporting, but there is a small (probably stupid) part of me that is hoping they’ve only gone this way because the IOC will ban their coverage if they question it.

I won’t hold my breath though.

Datun · 07/08/2024 12:00

I'm wondering if once the Olympics is over, and no one's TV or reporting rights are threatened, we'll see more reporting.

One thing's for sure, this isn't going away.

It's August. As soon as business picks up as usual, women aren't going to stop asking questions.

The bbc article does at least include the fairly clear line "The IOC said competitors were eligible for the women's division if their passports said they were female."

As the IBA said: Read between the lines

mrshoho · 07/08/2024 12:16

Unfortunately the bbc has the broadcasting rights for 2028 Olympics and possibly up to 2032. IOC have them firmly where they want so this biased reporting continues.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/08/2024 12:18

Unless Khelif is going to bank the prize money and then fade into obscurity (which I'm sure is a distinct possibility) this probably will come out at some point. I certainly won't be letting anyone forget how much the IOC and BBC and other media lied.

That must have cost a pretty penny.

I read a piece this morning ( BBC) which suggested that audiences actually enjoyed mixed sex events. In reference to a walking race today in which the teams are apparently mixed.

GerbilsAllTheWayDown · 07/08/2024 09:45

You're right, and speaking to my friend who was formerly an Olympian, if you speak out about something the IOC don't like, then you will be punished by exclusion from future Olympics. These women would only be able to say something if they knew it was their last Olympics.

What a shitty organisation they are. A million miles away from their, er, Olympian ideals.

It will, and as with Caster Semenya......people still saying Semenya "thought and 'acted' and presented as a girl all her life - until it was revealed she had a DSD" . Whereas photos, third party verbal recollections from childhood, and her own autobiography reveal otherwise.

duc748 · 07/08/2024 12:51

The more I think about it, the dishonesty from the BBC over this is disgusting. Do they have an eye on the rights for 2028? And that means they're prepared to suck up to the IOC in the meantime? Your job, BBC, is to give the British public the facts. Not to kow-tow to the IOC.

TheKeatingFive · 07/08/2024 12:59

Don't kid yourself that the BBC's hands have been tied on this. They are woeful on women's issues of late. They are 100% behind the 'if your passport says your female, that's good enough' narrative

duc748 · 07/08/2024 13:04

Sure, This just another aspect to it.

Snowypeaks · 07/08/2024 13:20

The BBC have lost the exclusive rights already. Those have gone to Warner, via Discovery. The BBC is sub-licensing them from Warner Discovery. Given that the rights will likely cost even more at the next Olympics, I can't see them coming back to the BBC.

Most people still think Semenya is a woman gifted by nature with natural advantages, and that back in the time she was a victim of racism, homophobia and whingey sore losers.

I think it's a scandal that she never handed her medals back. And that she has never been made to.

PeachyKeane · 07/08/2024 13:27

I'm just devastated by all this to be honest.

So so sad 😞 😔

Women just don't matter, even to other women. The amount of nonsense I've seen reported about this, the disinformation, the gas lighting.

We live in a terrible world.

Totally agree.

I honestly had no idea how unimportant woman's safety was to people. It is devastating to be left in no doubt 😓

I agree the media has not clearly laid out the details of why Semenya can no longer race in the female category.

I may be misremembering this but I think at one point Semenya was going to be a footballer where we know the rules allow for males.

Or all the Diamond League prize money.

$52,000 in 2018 alone.
