I read this article last night and I am livid. She discusses the riots in Rotherham. She mentions ‘a town with past tensions’. She makes no mention of the systematic and paedophilic rape of 1400 children.

classic guardian, don’t talk about it and don’t report it if it doesn’t fit the narrative.

I used to work in foster care services and girls of any race are very vulnerable as predators assume no-one is looking out for them and police don’t care as much since they’re “just” foster care kids . Often sadly they’re correct in their assumptions.

If these were mostly middle white girls from secure families with status in Rotherham they wouldn’t have been ignored.

ETA: people who exclusively focus on Asian grooming gangs don’t really care about CSA, because most abuse takes place outside this context and occurs within families and communities. Yes look into various types of CSA and how it happens and how it can be stopped, but when you’re so tunnel vision about the one type of abuse where you see Asian men being over represented it’s clear you’re just racist.

Mention anything a white man or woman has did to these frothing idiots include some horrific white grooming gangs and they’ll retort back with “pakistani grooming gangs” you see them all over Twitter under news stories where a white man has did something vile . It’s pathetic and disingenuous.

I suggest people listen to Samantha Morton being interviewed by Louis Theroux. She grew up in care and talks about the system and how it overlooked or even encouraged the sexual abuse of girls.

It's pretty depressing how embedded this myth that its a problem that's unique to certain communities has become.

I don't see it as a rape apology. These riots started by using the tragic Southport stabbings as an excuse. They are openly anti Muslim riots. The guy who did it wasnt muslim. They have attacked brown and black people who were walking home minding their own business. Most of the people rioting do not contribute anything useful to society. How does burning businesses and causing chaos help those in Southport or paedophilia in this country. Kids are being groomed by all colours in this country. It wasn't long ago a few gangs of white ppl were caught for paedophilia/grooming. Social media apps has made it so much harder to protect children from paedophilia. Yes I believe there needs to be restrictions on immigration so we can stabilise our economy but that will only be successful when partnered with withdrawal of us funding wars abroad, our govt ceasing to send billions to other countries, if we start minding our own business and pour those billions into education the nhs and our emergency services our economy and society will thrive.

Rotherham was predominantly Asian men targeting white girls. The fact that other sexual abuse happens does not change the fact that the grooming gangs in Rotherham were Asian men targeting white girls and the lack of response was because people did not think those girls were worth upsetting ‘community relations’ or risk being accused of being racist for.

Hear hear, and I always think it’s weird how they can say with a straight face that Asian men are inherently more predatory but they don’t give a damn about all the white British men who sexually abuse not only British women and kids but also foreign women, particularly South East Asian women and children. Some of these men go to Thailand etc in person to do their vile deeds but increasingly it’s occurring online now as well.

It’s sad because I worked with foster care kids, of all races, and I know children from a wide variety of backgrounds are in care and more generally a lot of kids are abused.

My (white) friend I grew up with was abused in 3 (white) foster homes and she said she hates it how racists are hijacking this issue. We both wish more people genuinely cared about sexual abuse of ALL children and women and fought on all fronts against it.

As a woman, these angry drunk white English men you see rioting are the exact type of men to give me hassle while I’m on a train or walking around in town myself late at night and would call the concept of misogyny As “woke”

I agree. I was a life long Guardianista as it was also my parents paper of choice.

I gave up reading it over a decade ago as it gradually became a a parody of itself and I realised I only bought it for the little TV Guide. My parents also stopped buying it around the same time.

They were, by grooming gangs. Not the only place in the North where this happened, either. Also Devizes, I think. This is what people mean when they talk of a 'two tier' system. Disturbances such as those that took place in Leicester in September 22 (when the country was in mourning) between Muslims and (right-wing) Hindus (RSS and BJP supporters) were hardly mentioned until it got so bad some nationals picked it up. Perpetrators were jailed but it was definitely a sweep it under the carpet moment. Ditto the grooming gangs which were ignored for years because it was racist to bring up what was happening and anyway the girls were trash - working-class girls in care/vulnerable/in need of care and protection, that is.

This is a huge oversimplification and does no credit to the victims at all.

The crimes came out around the time of the Oldham riots and the police were nervous about triggering other riots. The last week shows exactly why.

The far right in this context are causing their own problems by their tendency to go off half cocked with a violent response to a difficult problem.

Meanwhile the victims are largely ignored by this focus on the men.

Maybe if we listened to all victims of crime and didn't assume teenage girls were liars/gold diggers/enjoying it, this wouldn't happen as much.

This is a religion that a large proportion of the world's population follow. You cannot generalise like that.

It’s naivety. And a fixation on championing what are viewed as ‘minority’ groups in the UK to their own detriment. I don’t want to derail this thread but you see it happening with another prominent minority group. #BeKind…except I doubt these women would enjoy their own lives beholden to Sharia law.

I will give Priti Patel credit for criticising the riots and rioters in very strong terms.

Equally I find it mind boggling when people are accepting of Christianity and patriarchal practices generally, but very intolerant of Islam. It makes me feel their motivation isn't about protecting women and girls at all.

Do the thugs really care about the children or are they angry that the perpetrators were Asian and got away with it for so long because of systematic police incompetence?
If they really cared about the children then you’d expect violence against children to be virtually non-existent there but the children are being used to make a point about race rather than increase support and community vigilance with regards to violence against children. I would hazard a guess that children there still suffer abuse every day because violent men will always go after the weakest groups like children, women, animals and the elderly.
