I have never felt a punch like this’ – Carini

Words fail I'm so angry, but by god she is brave.
Personally I feel sick and 'triggered' it reminds me of the first time an ex punched me on the thigh, I couldnt get over how much it hurt or the enormous bruise from knee to hip. I know there is a general thread on this but its so important it deserves multiple threads. I hope Carinis decision to stop the fight so very publicly makes a difference.
Meanwhile Khelif crows “I am here for gold,” “I will fight anybody, I will fight them all.”
Not the REMOTEST hint of sportsmanlike conduct.
I vote we write to VIiner en masse and lay some responsibility at her feet.
Actually EVERY editor, The Indy NYT WAPO etc
I am incandescent

Read the whole thread. Seething with rage at another injustice towards women.

Can't believe the whataboutery on this thread: would someone please think of the poor men with the EXTREMELY RARE condition which, coincidentally pops up everywhere in elite WOMENS sports. It's a loophole, it needs closing. The women's category is not an access point for less capable male athletes to join elite sports.

I cant sleep Im so riled, the whataboutery from some possibly male posters is infuriating.
And then have the absolute cheek to flounce of the thread saying we are awful.
AKA 'youre right but Im too weak to admit it"

Equality in the punching-other-people department is not a valuable goal

So you dismiss Judo, Karate, Tai Kwando, too?

You think boxing is barbaric and shouldn't be allowed; fair enough, but not remotely relevant to this discussion. Allowing men to punch women is also barbaric, yet you have no objection to that situation? WTF!

Of course I object to men punching women. I also object to men punching men, or women punching women in the name of so-called sport. It's dehumanising. And I object to the people who watch these proceedings with relish. Why would anyone find it entertaining-unless they are getting off on the possibility of somebody being seriously hurt?

MarkWithaC · 02/08/2024 08:47

The IBA statement doesn't say they did a chromosome test, just that they did 'a separate and recognized test'.
Are we assuming it was a chromosome test, or is there another source confirming that?

TO BE CLEAR I stand with Angela Carini and everyone on this thread saying sex is binary. I just want to have my ducks in a row, both for my own thinking and for if/when this comes up in conversation IRL.

There are countries with athletics boards who are pretty much deliberately scouting for young people with DSDs - mysteriously all of whom seem to be XY - who can then be entered in female competitions. It’s horribly unfair on women.

I’m astonished by the utter lack of coverage of the issues raised by this fight, on the BBC news website.

I didn't know about this scouting until I read on another thread that Caster S was scouted in this way.
What a cynical, corrupt and misogynistic practice.
Does anyone have any sources for it? I'd like to read more.

Not sure if anyone has shared this photo yet, but I think it's fairly clear that this isn't a woman:

Having read about the Algerian boxer I am not sure what I think, this was an individual brought up as a girl who has a genetic condition therefore I think she is female. If she is not allowed to compete in some competition as the tests show she has high testosterone levels then so be it but in this occasion I feel that she is still female. This is a different case from self identification

Years ago, I used to train in kyokishin karate. It's full body contact. The difference between sparring women and men is night and day. And the only time men sparred with women was when a black belt male would help a lower grade female on technique or show her some moves in self defense. They would only allow this disparity in belt grades because, being more experienced, the men had control- they knew they could seriously hurt women otherwise. The thinnest, tiniest man has considerably more upper body strength and longer reach. Why are we pretending we dont know this now?

What you think does not change reality, I'm afraid.

"She" is a male with a disorder of sexual development. "She" has male chromosomes and functioning testes and was banned from boxing against women for this reason.

There is no overlap in male and female testosterone levels unless a woman is doping or is seriously unwell (and wouldn't then be competing). The only way to naturally have T levels that high is to have testicles.

"She" has all the advantages of having gone through male puberty.

We know it’s not self I’d. But please read the very clear articulate posts above about this situation before saying they are female. You need facts not kindness.

But leaving aside the ethics of boxing, if a woman fully understands the implications, she should be freely able to do so against other women. Not men.

Haven't read all of the FT as it's too upsetting.

All valid viewpoints, but a completely different discussion than whether a man should be allowed to compete against women in what is probably the most dangerous, but currently legal, sport. Your posts give the impression that you don't care about those women, that they're fair game for choosing to compete in a legal sport of which you don't approve.

Absolutely. She should know what she is consenting to and be able to withdraw consent accordingly.

All the comments about boxing being violent, what do you expect etc are horribly similar to date rape apologists - why did she get in a car with him/ go on a date with him/go back to his place if she doesn't want sex etc etc.

Repellent misogyny.

If you think a male fighting a female is fair, would it be OK for a female to wear metal body armour and knuckle dusters, because hey, it's violent anyway?

If not, why not?

Does being brought up as a girl make a man female? No. Does having a genetic condition make this man female? No. So why do you think 'she' is female?
