Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Greg Wallace appears to think that 'only middle class women of a certain age have complained' is a defence.

PuffinCliffs · 01/12/2024 09:26

Did he call them Karen too?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 01/12/2024 09:42

I wouldn't be surprised.

MouseMinge · 01/12/2024 16:12

The one thing Greg Wallace (I know it's Gregg, but also know that Greg annoys him, so ...) seems to be very good at is digging deeper and deeper holes.

The audience of the show he's most famous for is very much made up of middle class women of a certain age.

And of course we all know that working class women are up for anything and everything. Or something.

Pride in Canada seems more like a protection racket

Although the remarks the Mayor reportedly said were rather tactless.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 04/12/2024 07:36

I wonder if any other flags ar e compulsory.

This

https://www.itv.com/news/granada/2024-12-03/man-disrupts-tv-interview-about-women-feeling-unsafe-in-public-spaces

I...it's almost a parody!

I don't know anything about Tomorrow's Women (unfortunate initials) but looking at their website they seem to do good work. I don't know if their definition of women includes men. There's nothing explicit or implied either way that I noticed.

Anarlyn has been found guilty of murder

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2kx0zpj3j3o

It's still not clear what is Anarlyn's biological sex. One article just referred to 'the transgender'. Anarlyn is being sentenced on 31st January. Assuming it makes the papers, perhaps they'll say the prison the guilty party will be sent to.

If Anna's murderer is female identifying as male or vice versa, she doesn't seem to have made the list read out in the commons in March.

A family photo of Anna Jones issued by police. She has tied back, dark hair and wears what appears to be a pink, fleecey top.

From that BBC article "Anarlyn Jones, who was formerly known as Bronwyn Jones but now identifies as male".

lcakethereforeIam · 05/12/2024 19:32

I would interpret that as meaning Anarlyn is male, except writing 'identifies as' usually* *means the opposite.

Snowypeaks · 05/12/2024 19:34

Terrible story. Murdered by your own child.

ChaChaChooey · 05/12/2024 22:31

Photos of Bronwyn/Anerlyn in this older article: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12071909/amp/Daughter-25-charged-murdering-mother-44-Petersfield-home.html

The murder of Anna Jones has been reported on in the Telegraph

https://archive.ph/V7Beq

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/12/05/woman-guilty-stabbing-her-mother-to-death-hampshire/

It seems Bronwyn is actually female. I hope she doesn't get sent to a male jail. Clear reporting by the paper. I wonder if they'd do the same if a tw was the murderer?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/12/2024 21:44

She won't be sent to the male estate.

lcakethereforeIam · 07/12/2024 01:26

This article from Unherd is interesting. Well I think so

https://unherd.com/2024/12/the-menendez-brothers-prey-on-empathy/

Obviously what the writer says can be applied in other areas.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 07/12/2024 06:12

I was asked recently if I'd like to help with some university research into the experiences of people from different backgrounds in my profession. I said yes and got an email, from the researcher who said she has enough from my (middle class) background but that she was looking for women who were lesbian, bisexual and non binary.

To entertain myself, I replied I don't have a gender identity which I think makes me non binary, and she's now replied with delight asking me to arrange an interview. I have to decline due to unforeseen circumstances don't I?

Britinme · 07/12/2024 13:09

I think you should do it anyway to get the point over that being a woman is a biological fact not an identity.

Snowypeaks · 07/12/2024 14:52

Definitely do it. It's not as if you lied. She might learn something.

SqueakyDinosaur · 07/12/2024 18:34

I think sponsoring an exhibition and/or further research into the Spinning House and the women who were sent there would be far more appropriate than an apology. Who do you apologise to if everyone concerned is dead?

SqueakyDinosaur · 07/12/2024 21:56

And my friend R suggests a massive donation to either a local women's refuge or a charity that works with trafficked women and/or sex workers. I think that's a very good idea.

bignosebignose · 10/12/2024 10:46

Slightly off at a tangent but some threadsters may recall Ben Cohen of Pink News being a vocal advocate of males in women's spaces, etc., including making an arse of himself on Stephen Nolan's Stonewall podcast a few years ago. Imagine my surprise to see accusations about him that he might be a bit of a sex pest as well as - gasp - a misogynist!
