TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Not sure if this is true, but it is being claimed on X and going viral

BREAKING: Irish boxer Kellie Harrington, an Olympic Gold Medalist in 2021, has said she will REFUSE to compete against any boxers who are biological males at this Olympics.

Could be nonsense.

Harrington has just won her fight so will be a possible finalist against Algeria's Imane Khelif or Lin Yu-Ting from Taiwan if they win. Harrington beat Khelif before.

SabrinaThwaite · 31/07/2024 19:22

Khelif due to fight Angela Carini of Italy tomorrow at 11.20 in the 66kg category.

Lin due to fight Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan on Friday at 14.30 in the 57kg category.

Yes. If journalists investigated and tried to report only facts. If the IOC was fair. If men didn't try to cheat.

Yes, the woman swimmer was sent home. Her boyfriend, also a competitor, was not.

What????!!!!!! How can they justify that??!!!

Now heading into diplomatic incident territory as the Algerian Sports body defends itself while Italian ministers are horrified.

“COA strongly condemns the unethical targeting and maligning of our esteemed athlete, Imane Khelif, with baseless propaganda from certain foreign media outlets,” it said in a statement.
“Such attacks on her personality and dignity are deeply unfair, especially as she prepares for the pinnacle of her career at the Olympics. The COA has taken all necessary measures to protect our champion.”
Italy’s Family Minister Eugenia Roccella and Sports Minister Andrea Abodi voiced rconcern about the eligibility rules on Wednesday.
“It is surprising that there are no certain, strict, uniform criteria at the international level,” Roccella said.
She added that it was strange “that there can be a suspicion, and far more than a suspicion, of an unfair and potentially dangerous contest for one of the contenders at the Olympics, an event that symbolises sporting fairness”.
Abodi questioned a lack of alignment in “parameters of minimum hormonal values.
“In the event that represents the highest values of sport, the safety of female and male athletes must be guaranteed, as well as respect for fair competition,” Abodi added.
“That is not how it will be tomorrow for Angela Carini.

Eugenia Roccella, Italy's family minister, said it was "greatly concerning to know that men who identify as women have been admitted to women's boxing events at the Olympics."

Controversy not dying down:

Strong sensible statement from the captain of the Australian women’s boxing team; sadly, the article also quotes a load of waffle from her team coach that fails to take safety concerns on board at all 🙄

SabrinaThwaite · 31/07/2024 20:53

Sharron Davies has posted a statement made by the IBA today clarifying why the two boxers were disqualified from the Worlds. Both failed tests (not for T) which indicated that they had a competitive advantage.

Lin didn’t appeal to CAS, Khelif initially appealed and then withdrew it.

It surely would have been helpful if the IBA had defined exactly what those tests were. They must have their reasons for not being more explicit.

@biddyboo... still no one claiming they are XX.

There has been no claim that they are anything other than XX. There has been no claim that they are transwomen or that they have DSDs. The claim is that they have the right to compete in the women's event. Therefore the assumption is that they claim to be XX.

Reduxx has unearthed this

"This is something that was informally confirmed by IBA President Umar Kremlev to Tass News in 2023, who added that the disqualified boxers had "XY chromosomes."

This is further confirmed by the fact that the IBA defines "woman" as "an individual with chromosome XX." It also outlines that a boxer may be subjected to tests to confirm if they have such chromosomes, which serves as the eligibility criteria for women's IBA boxing."

lcakethereforeIam · 31/07/2024 22:23

They're lying by omission. The IBA are telling the truth by omission. There's probably a medical confidentiality thingy that's stopping them from just coming out and saying it.

Female boxers who have fought Imane Kehlif have mentioned long reach.
So I googled to find out whether men have longer reach than women of same height. It appears that on average they do. The measurement is arm span height ratio (ASHR, or AHR). Even when measured across different ages and ethnicities. https://erj.ersjournals.com/content/44/4/905

Note: Do not google arm length sex, the results will not be .. uh .. tasteful.

All-age relationship between arm span and height in different ethnic groups

The objective of the present study was to establish multiethnic, all-age prediction equations for estimating stature from arm span in males and females. The arm span/height ratio (ASHR) from 13 947 subjects (40.9% females), aged 5–99 years, from nine...

Thanks.

I guess we will see if it is true soon. I would get it withdrawn but I think that others will keep posting it. So maybe if I leave it there with your post here it will stop others posting too.

😂thanks for taking one for the team.

alittleprivacy · 31/07/2024 23:22

Kellie isn't in the same weight-class this year as either of the men. So there is no risk of her fighting against them.

Thanks

No need for the eye roll though.
If you already had the link why would I waste time googling it.

I googled it for you. dont be so slack

Retiredfromthere · 31/07/2024 23:59

@NotBadConsidering that content is now no longer available. Curious that. Perhaps unsurprising.

duc748 · 01/08/2024 00:21

Indeed. But there you could get to this link, which at least details her win over him, although all the videos aren't available. The lead story there from Tokyo hardly shows the Olympics in a shining light either.

The IBA statement posted by Sharron Davies does not once refer to the 2 boxers using she/her pronouns…
