TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

No mention in the commentary at all.

Collidascope · 02/08/2024 14:48

Infuriating hearing commentators talking about how it was difficult for Turdibekova against such an experienced opponent. Yeah, nothing to do with the fact that she was fighting a man.

Motorina · 02/08/2024 14:48

"Her mid and long range work are very good". Yes, that's because his arms are a foot longer!

Absolute disgrace.

murasaki · 02/08/2024 14:49

Remember that Nike campaign 'this girl can'?

Some girls can't because this man does.

puffyisgood · 02/08/2024 14:50

it was suitably unedifying.

the woman looked like she was up against significant disadvantages in height, reach, and explosiveness, fought very bravely without really laying a glove on the man, face marked up a bit though not badly hurt, no suggestion of a handshake after the 'fight', hurried off in businesslike fashion

Naunet · 02/08/2024 14:50

Does anyone know who the commentators were? They’re disgusting.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 02/08/2024 14:52

How often do Olympic level boxing matches finish so fast? I seem to remember matches being much longer, back when I briefly watched Barry McGuigan.

This is amateur boxing, not professional. Different rules. For women, it's 4 rounds of 2 minutes and scored on points.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 02/08/2024 14:56

Thank you @Motorina I didn’t appreciate the difference, and yesterdays 46 second match didn’t help!

SabrinaThwaite · 02/08/2024 14:59

Note how the BBC commentator mentioned Lin winning World Champs in 2022 but not being disqualified in 2023.

Cismyfatarse · 02/08/2024 15:04

What happened?

TWETMIRF · 02/08/2024 15:07

I know they didn't have women's events back then but there would have been no confusion in the original Olympics as they were all naked

SabrinaThwaite · 02/08/2024 15:07

Who’s leaning on Carini?

kiterunning · 02/08/2024 15:08

She's obviously been massively pressured/threatened

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/08/2024 15:08

I have a question. I understand that in Zambia or Algeria, in a rural area, DSD/VSD might be missed until puberty. And they are useful for the Olympic committees of majority world countries. But Taiwan has pretty advanced healthcare, doesn't it? I mean wouldn't this have been observed earlier?

I lived there for a few years in the 90s and even then Taiwan had amazing healthcare. It would absolutely have been spotted.

Naunet · 02/08/2024 15:13

A woman is forced to fight a man, and then forced to apologise to him for not being kind enough to him.

murasaki · 02/08/2024 15:14

Someone has definitely pressured Carini, and i don't think it's the italians. The IOC probably threatened her with a ban going forwards. But most boxers only do one Olympics.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 02/08/2024 15:17

If he gets elected I won't be able to help thinking . . . .

'every cloud . . .'

I think it'd be a mistake to try and apply any kind of logic to any of this but for what it's worth:

Carini wants to apologise to Khelif. Please pass me the sick bucket.

Poor sod. She knows the truth!

And as for today I haven't been able to watch it.I can't face it after yesterday.

Wow, didn't know that. Even today, dentists recognise that I've had dental work in Taiwan.
