TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Well quite! If only because so many people are baffled and confused by the BBC's coverage...

StealthSpinach · 01/08/2024 23:00

Australia’s national broadcaster (ABC) has, up to now, not even mentioned the story…
1 hour ago, they posted an article that states that the next boxing governing body (to replace the IBA) SUPPORTS THE IOC stance and will continue it - as the “science” backs it up.

RIP women’s boxing and women’s sport.

'Sad situation for all boxers': Head of World Boxing addresses issues over gender after Italian boxer quits mid-round

Boris Van Der Vorst defends the IOC over its handling of gender testing, as an Italian boxer quits mid-fight against Algerian Imane Khelif.

It was just covered superficially on Sky News.

Apparently it’s far too nuanced and complex to talk about and they hate the term ‘woke’ “what does that even mean?”

A nano second of commentary from cowardly so-called journalists who basically waved it away saying ‘the Olympic committee have applied standards to both competitors and nothing to see here.’

So fucking infuriating.

duc748 · 01/08/2024 23:02

I think a PP, wondering about the IOC's motives, surmised that maybe they wanted rid of boxing from the Olympics. I wondered too why they've chosen to take this oddly permissive view, but if it was to get rid of boxing, this seems a cack-handed way to go about it, because surely it's only bringing them bad PR. But I'm none the wiser for any better motives.

Snowypeaks · 01/08/2024 23:08

Maybe the IOC do want rid of boxing, but to my mind this is just the logical consequence of taking a decision that sex doesn't matter/there's no advantage, that inclusion is the primary value above safety and fairness - all mixed into an attitude that women's sport isn't real sport. Not like men's.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/08/2024 23:08

as the “science” backs it up.

Anyone with a self ID country can get an F on their passport. Any man could. That's not science, Australia!

duc748 · 01/08/2024 23:16

@Snowypeaks I just thought, at a time when international sporting organisations in many sports have already been clear on this, and those who have equivocated are coming under increasing media pressure, why would the IOC almost seek to be an outlier, by heading full steam in the opposite direction? But maybe they're just misogynists, or idiots, or both. I have no idea.

You're probably right, but they seem like true believers bought and paid for to me.

That is grim Spinach. I had been watching Aunty all day to see if they said anything.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 01/08/2024 23:29

There are regular changes in which sports go in the Olympics. They don't need an 'excuse' if they want to drop boxing.

Boiledbeetle · 01/08/2024 23:30

🚨UPDATE🚨

The International Boxing Association has released a SECOND statement reiterating that Lin and Khelif were "not eligible to compete within the female category" and condemning the Olympics for not protecting female boxers.

"The IBA will never support any boxing bouts between the genders, as the organization puts the safety and well-being of our athletes first. We are protecting our women and their rights to compete in the ring against equal rivals, and we will defend and support them in all instances; their hopes and dreams must never be taken away by organisations unwilling to do the right thing under difficult circumstances."

They would for removing the entire sport as big as boxing. The ones that get dropped tend to be the more fringe ones, baseball, breakdance, tug of war, or aspects of bigger ones like removing solo synchronized swimming. To drop an entire world popular sport that's been part of the games for 120 years would be massive.

Other inducements are also available! 😃

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 01/08/2024 23:38

Just covered boxing on the BBC1 daily highlights show.

Mark Chapman read out the IOC's statement but neither presenter sounded enthusiastic which was something at least. It was like a pall fell over the studio. The start of the segment was tactfully described as 'a controversy in the boxing'.

I hadn't actually read/heard the IOC statement word for word, it was pretty shocking. Insanely arrogant.

I hope the headlines are on it tomorrow morning. This is going to keep going, because he has other women to fight

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/aug/01/angela-carini-abandons-fight-after-46-seconds-against-imane-khelif
Sean Ingle in The Guardian is doing a brilliant job. Manages a clear report on the issue without calling Khelif 'she' at any point. All journalists should be doing this. Despite this horrible situation and Angela Carini's loss of her Olympic hopes, I do think this is very strong sunlight on the issue.

That is a clear article, thank you.

World at One 36:57 mins in
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0021jp

‘She quit after being hit with one solid right hand punch’

Then at the end he said,

‘ her nose had not been broken’.

‘She didn’t have a mark on her.’

‘Her eyes were crystal clear.’

‘She got hit a ? punch, and turned away’

No mention that the previous sports body’s objection to the opponent’s gender in regard to a women’s boxing match might have been that they were male.

No mention of what Carini herself had said about how she was affected by that punch.

Imagine BBC Radio 4 leaving people less informed than the DM.

You would think two different matches were being discussed. Compared to Bunce on the BBC Radio 4 World at One,
Sean Ingle in the Guardian wrote,

In highly charged scenes at the North Paris Arena, a first punch from Khelif dislodged Carini’s chinstrap and a second smashed against her chin and bloodied her shorts. After multiple punches Carini returned to her corner and raised her hand.

Appalonia · 02/08/2024 00:06

Just wanted to say, been listening to a Twitter space tonight hosted by Linda Blade ( American sports coach and author ) and Terf Island is getting a lot of love, especially about how this issue has been reported in our press!😁

Catiette · 02/08/2024 00:11

The Australian article is shocking.

My bolding (I especially like "emotionally quit" - can you imagine that adverb being applied to a man? Why not just say what you mean & use "hysterical"?)

"...her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, emotionally quit after just 46 seconds and a few punches"

"Even though Carini said she wasn't making a political statement about Khelif, Carini's tearful abandonment of the bout became a worldwide sensation on social media and in Western culture wars."

"An emotional Angela Carini speaks to media after the fight."

"wild conclusions and speculation thrown across social media about both fighters"

Teachers, this is creating an excellent set of resources to demonstrate the insidious power of media bias...

Signalbox · 02/08/2024 00:26

I wonder if Lisa Nandy is still of the opinion that the culture wars are over?
