TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Has there been any comment from Lisa Nandy?

murasaki · 01/08/2024 18:36

Or Jess Phillips?

n

Kelly has livestreamed the match

I just tried to watch this. The IOC have spiked it as copyrighted content, fucking bastards. There’s no guarantee they won’t quietly memory hole the whole bout if the furore gets embarrassing enough for them. They’re coming across as shady AF.

BBC News just now. Introduced item as Khelif previously failing an "eligibility test" (the fundamental word "gender" - we'd say "sex" - omitted), & subsequently refined this to its being due to "elevated levels of testosterone according to the IOC". My understanding was that he was refused entry in the World Championships on the basis of chromosomal testing - he was XY, not XX. 1) Am I right in this? 2) If so, surely this is another instance of the BBC using "reliable sources" (ref. recent thread with Daily Mail journalist appearing to suggest that requesting further verification of such sources is unrealistic &/or unnecessary) to, effectively, lie to the public?

Edited

You are correct on all counts.

Catiette · 01/08/2024 18:41

Bastards.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 18:42

The similar threads has reminded me that US Boxing were going to let men fight women. Any word from them or from the US boxing team in the Olympics?

Catiette · 01/08/2024 18:42

Sorry, but it makes me so angry.

But - if in other sports it's as easy as "having an F on your passport" then do we not think that other countries will see this and take advantage for 2028?

In most cases it isn't - "having an F on your passport" is the IOC's preferred policy - as of about 3 years ago, having given up on testosterone levels, or even the belief that there is an inherent male advantage that justifies separate events.

But most sports events at the Olympics have their rules set by their own international bodies, and those bodies have been moving pretty much universally in a direction of removing trans and DSD loopholes permitting males into female sports.

This is an exceptional instance of the IOC getting to actually run a particular sporting event their way. And an example of why they should never be permitted to.

The IOC doesn't really seem to be a sports organisation - they just identify as one.

That.

These two men would appear to be like Semenya: DSD but fully aware that they are men.

However if the IOC is going entirely on passport then what would have stopped any man identifying into the women's sports? Changing sex on your passport is a piece of piss these days.

duc748 · 01/08/2024 18:49

The BBC piece surely contradicts itself anyway: it says

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) - which did not organise the World Championships but is running the boxing at Paris 2024 - said welterweight Khelif was disqualified in India because of elevated levels of testosterone.

But then further down it reports the IBA as saying

On Wednesday, the IBA said the pair were disqualified at the World Championships "to uphold the level of fairness and utmost integrity of the competition".
It said they "did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognised test, whereby the specifics remain confidential".

Catiette · 01/08/2024 18:52

I think this lie - I won't say error - is worth a complaint.

I mean, so much more is - where do we start?! - but...

Could it be that the BBC's usual defence of "we cited a reliable source" falls down here on the basis that this is a story about the competence of the IOC - as such, to rely on its say-so without at least qualifying this as potentially partisan is inarguably problematic?

Catiette · 01/08/2024 18:54

In other words, Duc, rendering the usual "oh, well, we trusted our source" indefensible...

I've already complained.

Edit: or will do when the email verification message comes through. No sign of it yet, let's hope it's because they're a bit busy.

HipTightOnions · 01/08/2024 18:58

I did notice that the BBC report did not refer to Khelif as "she".

(Not "he" either, but small mercies...)

Lovelyview · 01/08/2024 18:59

Appalonia · 01/08/2024 17:36

What do you mean, he was brought up as a girl? Where's the evidence for that? He sure looks like a man to me!

Males with certain DSDs have internal genitalia and may be assumed to be female at birth and brought up as a girl. Their testes (which are inside their body) still produce testosterone so they go through a form of male puberty and develop a more masculine body type and have masculine testosterone levels. This means they have a massive advantage over women in sports. (That's a simplified explanation. The NHS has information about DSDs if you're interested in finding out more)

Chersfrozenface · 01/08/2024 19:01

Also, the BBC did show whathisface from the IOC saying eligibility was based on passports with less than total confidence and conviction.

So there is that.

Catiette · 01/08/2024 19:02

Whatshisface could barely get the words out.

He knows.

Coward.

I stumbled across this from, of all things, the Hollywood Reporter

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/jk-rowling-paris-boxing-controversy-1235964201/

Cutting straight to what's important, JKR misgendered the wee petal Hmm Then quoting that bloke from the IOC at the end like it's some kind of gotcha. JKR, are you not being kind enough? Many happy returns for yesterday btw.

Controversy has been sparked after the fight between Italian boxer Angela Carini and Algeria's Imane Khelif ended after just 46 seconds on Thursday.

All women should refuse to compete with them. Fuck it.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 01/08/2024 19:13

Anna Luca Hamori, not criticising, but stating:
‘…it was her choice ... I know I won't do this, never in my life.’

I do hope she doesn’t have cause to regret that and she is safe on Saturday.

Well done to Marissa Williamson for speaking up:

“I think the IOC needs to take measures to ensure the safety of all athletes, not just one or two. All athletes."
Asked if athletes like Khelif should be allowed to compete in women's sport, Williamson said "the natural consequence" of having this issue was that a person should not compete at the Olympics.
"A natural consequence that you can't put other people at risk”

Read here as posted earlier. He is not lying there are photos of his upbringing as a girl. Algerians are posting them:
https://www.unicef.org/algeria/en/stories/top-female-boxer-imane-khelif-dreams-gold-inspire-young-people

This is a sort of tragic case. A boy with a DSD of some kind who would have been picked up as such in the modern west. Forced to live as a girl in a repressive society [a fetish for some trans types] finds an escape through sport. The only problem his escape lies through oppressing women. Truth comes out when older, but no-one can admit they screwed up.

That seems exceptionally unlikely. Both boxers have been fighting as women for many years - it would be a hell of a long game.

I don't mean a long-term planned protest. I mean that when she found out she was fighting a man at the Olympics she gave herself the option to bail out early knowing that it would create a controversy. I watched the match and, I'm no expert but, I get the feeling she wouldn't have given up at the point she did if she had been fighting with a female opponent. She clearly thought it was unfair and she refused to congratulate Khelif. It feels like part self-preservation and part protest to me.

It'll be interesting to hear if she has anything else to says about it all at a later date.

That is exactly how I saw it.

I haven't seen or heard any BBC news or radio reports, but currently on their news website there's nothing about this on the front page, and nothing on the "Sport" front page either - it's hidden away under "Boxing". There they have 2 stories:

Boxer Khelif through as opponent abandons in 46 seconds

where they mention "elevated levels of testosterone", but don't tell us that's because he's actually a man, and from yesterday

Algeria condemn 'unethical targeting' of boxer over eligibility

I don't see any articles about "Outrage over male boxer punching woman in the face."

So the usual unbiased reporting from the BBC, then.Hmm

any Olympic historians here? Has there ever been a single recorded instance of a medal winner being booed to the rafters and/or being pelted with rotten fruit during the presentation ceremony?
