TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Sorry if this has been posted already, I've just seen it:
A top female boxer, Imane Khelif, dreams of gold to inspire young people | UNICEF
It says 'her' father disapproved of girls boxing, and she had to go behind his back to box, which if it's true implies that the family really thought he was a girl.

I think a PP has suggested that he might have a DSD like Semanya, which would lead his family genuinely to believe he was a girl just on the basis of external genitalia at birth. In both cases, their DSD gave them a route to fame and money post puberty, as long as they can compete as women against women.

It must be difficult to grow up thinking you were a girl, being treated as a girl, and then bang! male puberty hits and you're more like a man, but without male genitals. I'm not devoid of sympathy for the individuals concerned. But to then go on and cynically exploit that, to the detriment of women, is where any sympathy goes up in smoke.

Men competing in women's sports is one thing. The IOC attempting to gag broadcasters with their dubious guidelines is quite another. Both are worthy news stories in their own right. Where's BBC Verify when you need it?

It’s Orwellian Doublespeak and the media organisations should be ashamed of themselves for complying.

ArtFartGunkel · 01/08/2024 14:57

I was driving with DH listening to the World At One and I don't know what was more irritating- the BBC lying about a male boxer, or my intelligent husband of many, many years saying "it's the BBC, it must be true."

Sorry if this has already been posted and I may be late to the party but testosterone was never tested.

Only a sex chromosome test which was failed.

:
Yesterday, the International Boxing Association released an eleventh hour statement which definitively established that Khelif was not eligible to compete in women's boxing.

Khelif, along with Taiwan's Lin Yu-Ting, had been previously disqualified from the 2023 Women's Boxing World Championship after it was determined they had an unfair advantage over female boxers.

And while supporters and national Olympic Committees claimed this was simply because the boxers had "naturally high testosterone," the IBA put this myth to bed and confirmed they had not conducted a testosterone level test on either one of them.

Instead, the IBA said that Khelif and Lin had been disqualified after a separate medical test was conducted which established they were not eligible to participate in women's boxing.

Crucially, the IBA defines "woman" as "an individual with XX chromosomes." The "gender tests" they conduct on boxers do not measure their hormone levels, but determines whether they meet this definition of "woman" as per the IBA eligibility criteria.

Khelif and Lin did not.

Yet despite this, the @iocmedia has allowed both to compete in women's boxing at Paris 2024. While some may believe the IOC conducted their own medical tests, this is untrue. The IOC ceased all sex-testing in 1999. And for the purposes of the Paris Olympics, the eligibility for women's boxing has been limited to whether an individual has legal documents stating they are female.

Reduxx will be clear for a final time: Khelif and Lin are NOT believed to be transgender. Instead, they are believed to be individuals impacted by a Difference of Sexual Development, a medical condition which results in the abnormal development of secondary sex characteristics.

Individuals impacted by some DSDs, for example, may have XY chromosomes, but not develop a penis in utero. Thus, they are marked as "female" when they are born, and may go a substantial part of their lives without knowing they are biologically male.

In the past, male athletes with DSDs have been actively sought out by national Olympic teams because they have a substantial advantage over females and can fly "under the radar" thanks to their "female" legal documentation.

But individuals with XY chromosomes, no matter their secondary sex characteristics or medical conditions, are still male. And they should not be competing against females.

@iocmedia was and has been aware of concerns surrounding Khelif and Lin's biological sex, yet has been allowing them to continue compete against females.

This is putting female athletes at serious risk. It is also crushing the dreams of female Olympians like Angela Carini, who earned their place in their sport.

In one of the most shaming episodes in Olympic historyy_, Italian’s Angela Carini was forced after only 46 seconds to abandon a fight out of fear for her life against an Algerian boxer who had failed two gender tests, claiming she had been hit so hard by Imane Khelif that she “couldn’t breathe any more”.
A bout that had already detonated ferocious controversy, with the International Olympic Committee under intense pressure to justify how a woman could be allowed to enter a boxing ring uncertain of the sex of the person she was facing, tipped into outrage as Carini claimed that she had never received such powerful punches.

Sorry I'm confused. Is there anything about the Algerian boxer that makes them female at all? Is it genuinely ambiguous?

No. In his appearance maybe but chromosomal testing has confirmed he is male. Twice.

Edited because I may have misunderstood the initial question

if that's true (which I dont doubt) then what makes this competitor a women? Them saying so? Is that it?

Yes. It’s really as simple as that with a legal document to confirm it.

Seems to be the letter 'F' on a passport.

They have a DSD, were probably registered female at birth, and so have a female passport. ( Same as with Caster Semenya). There are some images of the Taiwanese athlete doing the rounds, and he makes no pretence of even presenting or dressing as a woman in his everyday life. He dresses in typical male clothing.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/08/2024 15:17

After the fight, the Algerian Boxing Federation gloated about Khelif's victory, posting on Facebook: 'Congratulations to the Algerian boxer Iman Khalif, who responds strongly in the ring and qualifies for the quarterfinals, after defeating the Italian Angelina Carini in less than 46 seconds, effortlessly.

It should say,

I read the name as Man Khalif.

The IOC eligibility rules. Gender identity and/or an F on his passport.

This is shameful. No further women competitors should get in the ring with these men.

That's it: I've got my f**king limit with the BBC now. SHE'S HAD HER NOSE BROKEN!!!! And they have lied, and lied ,and LL odd SO Much, I don't believe I can or should give benefit of the doubt it's a woman with a DSD; the gagging by IOC shows they deserve no trust, and the BBC have a history in years now of reporting men as women, in vital areas, like crimes, prisons, health. And what's terrifying is what this lack of trust, that seems like us well and truly out of the bottle now, will do for society, if you cant debate in good faith, or believe what the other person is saying, without wishing to be dramatic, society crumbles. (Sorry, bad afternoon).

Sean Ingle in The Guardian is doing a brilliant job. Manages a clear report on the issue without calling Khelif 'she' at any point. All journalists should be doing this. Despite this horrible situation and Angela Carini's loss of her Olympic hopes, I do think this is very strong sunlight on the issue.

Yes as speculated earlier in this thread there is a lot going on. Apparently Khelif was brought up in a particularly conservative part of Algeria. A lot of Algerian posters on X are claiming that he can't be transgender because of this as it is banned in the country. [Reminiscent of the whole there are no gay Muslims claim you sometimes hear.] The implication from some that is a Western problem and what is more it is a conspiracy to stop Khelif from winning. From what we can gather Khelif has some form of DSD so his parents insisted he was a girl. This is the point where traditional gender norms crossover with new gender norms again - whoever wins women lose.

It seems Khelif has got better and stronger since 2000. Clever opponents could use his over confidence generated by easy wins against him before it is way more difficult now. He is convinced he has to win to prove his country right and prove himself to his family. That is why this is so dangerous.

The headlines are something

Carini-Khelif bout result of taking ideas to extremes-Meloni

"I have been trying to explain for years that, when taken to the extreme, some theses risk impacting women's rights," Meloni said at Team Italy's Casa Italia headquarters at the Olympics.
"I think that athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women's competitions.
"Not because we want to discriminate against anyone, but in order to protect the right of female athletes to be able to compete on equal terms".

JKR as ever sums it up

J.K. Rowling

A young female boxer has just had everything she’s worked and trained for snatched away because you allowed a male to get in the ring with her. You’re a disgrace, your ‘safeguarding’ is a joke and #Paris24 will be forever tarnished by the brutal injustice done to Carini.

Bravo JK Rowling as ever.

I see the plea about 'there are Real People involved' to try and hush the fury, and wonder is the concern for the one whose feelings might be hurt, or the one with the broken nose just beaten into surrendering out of fear for their safety after just 46 seconds?

My family memeber was male, born with a dsd in the 1970's. The family were asked if they wanted to bring him up as a girl. They declined and he is married to a woman now and it was the best choice for him.
Men with sexual developement disorders are not women and it is John Money's ideas that have dominated this space for too long.
