TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Top 4 headlines in the DM is just this story. It’s hopefully going to be big news

I hope there will be so much sunlight on this that it will not be possible to do the “just move on … nothing to see here”. This is so wrong and needs to stop right now.

"This is a man punching a woman at the #Olympics2024Paris
This is where we are in the world.
Male violence against women is officially a sport. 🏅
And this isn't over because he has more women to beat up.

#IStandWithAngelaCarini
#BoycottOlympics2024"

Has a rather distressing slowed down version of the punch

Hate to post a DM link but:

Female boxer yells 'this is unjust' and falls to her knees in tears as she quits fight against 'biologically male' Olympic opponent after just 46 SECONDS following two powerful punches | Daily Mail Online

This has made me cry. That poor woman. When you think of the hard work and dedication it takes to get to the Olympics, to be faced with such an injustice is appalling.

Thank you. Don’t hate to post it. They do better than the BBC, which usually has no integrity when it comes to mentioning matters of sex vs. gender.

The BBC has an internal trans activist censor, or did until recently.

Lovely quote from Carini. Obfuscation over the cheat.

The Guardian has no integrity.

WearyLady · 01/08/2024 13:13

And the BBC are currently misreporting the issue again. Imane Khalif is being reported using female pronouns and the Italian boxer's withdrawal and Khalif's exclusion from previous competitions is being reported as an issue regarding testosterone levels. No mention of Khalif being a man or even transgender. Disgraceful!!!

WearyLady · 01/08/2024 13:13

This is on The World at One.

duc748 · 01/08/2024 13:17

Was going to say, the IOC may be able to muzzle sporting media, but surely the issues can be covered in news and current affairs programmes?

In the live sports Guardian coverage there were a LOT of comments basically stating the obvious that it was a man beating up a woman. They have all now been moderated when I refreshed the blog. Wish I'd screenshot it.

The guardian are a disgrace. Some comments still remain for those to read between the lines but it's still a disgrace.

And now they've closed the live blog comments!!!! I wonder why??? Cowards...

duc748

You would hope so, but it won't do any good if they continue to talk about the "females" Khelif and Lin, "her" gender, "accepted as female", etc etc. If they use the ideological language they are almost making it worse. Makes it look like sex is a spectrum, depends on how you measure it, etc. What's all the fuss about? Poor things, having their "gender" questioned. We can blame the IOC but media outlets are arguably worse. They are trying to get clicks by whipping up a storm that will anger both sides equally. By and large, they aren't trying to help us.

Edited for clarity and to tag in duc.

I heard this in the car. Complete bloody misdirection. It makes it sound like the issue is performance-enhancing testosterone doping by a biologically female athlete. Talk about missing the mark!

Davros · 01/08/2024 13:30

Just seen on BBC that the Italian female boxer withdrew after 40 seconds. They carefully mentioned the two male---- boxers and that they had been disqualified from previous competitions due to ineligibility

I thought their testosterone levels weren't tested?

Are they assuming it's high testosterone, because their sex was tested?

pepperaunt · 01/08/2024 13:33

I’m unbelievably furious. How could they allow this to happen (rhetorical question, of course…)? I really feel for Carini who was forced to quit to protect her body from that man

Retiredfromthere · 01/08/2024 13:33

More coverage of the match and the issues (from their perspective) in Time magazine. This bit caught my eye. https://time.com/7006338/imane-khelif-lin-yu-ting-gender-controversy-olympics-women-boxing/

"For her part, Khelif, who became a UNICEF ambassador earlier this year, has said she is most proud of her ability to overcome obstacles, including finding success in a sport that her father didn’t approve of girls participating in. “My dream is to win a gold medal,” she said in March. “I particularly want to inspire girls.”

Olympic Boxing Is Having a Fight About Gender

What to know about the controversy over two boxers who were disqualified from competing as women in the World Championships but are taking part in the Olympics.

I’m in Italy at the moment and most people I’ve heard commenting on this (all?) are so angry.

Better on telly. Same words but they also showed a clip which makes the situation very clear!

I put his name in YouTube last night. From the thumbnail captions, most seem to think he's trans. Although a caption doesn't give much room for nuance.

Assuming he's got a DSD that affects only males but he insists that he's female then afaic he is trans.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 01/08/2024 13:39

That patronising pat on the shoulder. 🤐

He's male. He knows he's male. He identifies as female.

That's trans, surely?

kiterunning · 01/08/2024 13:39

I am too angry to comment coherently.

zibzibara · 01/08/2024 13:40

This is horrifying, I'm absolutely furious and disgusted at everyone who enabled this.

EsmaCannonball · 01/08/2024 13:41

I thought broadcasters were being their usual mealy-mouthed selves over not mentioning men were competing against women, I had no idea the IOC had actually gagged them. That is absolutely fucking sinister in a way that goes beyond sport and even women's rights.
