TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Carini’s reaction said it all. She knew she was up against a man. She would have known leading up to it. She knew as soon as she started she had a man with a significant reach and more power landing on her face that she’s likely ever experienced in competition. It must have been overwhelming. Her refusal to acknowledge him and shouting “it’s not fair” says it all. Shame on the IOC.

Agree to all of that. She tried to fight but I do not blame her, she did her best.

She got hit so hard her head went spinning. She did well to still be standing.

And tbh it didn't even look like that was a huge punch from khefir. I think there was worse to come.

Brava Carini, you fought bravely.

qwerty14 · 01/08/2024 11:49

I can't believe this went ahead.

Datun · 01/08/2024 11:50

Absolutely fucking disgusting. That's her hopes of a medal shattered because the IOC are a fucking bunch of misogynists.

Let men into the ring because they've got an F on their passport, and then stop all the reporting of it!

Any bloke can get an F on his passport.

Plasmodesmata · 01/08/2024 11:52

So does he advance to the next round to fight another woman?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/08/2024 11:52

And the idiot commentator wibbling on about Carini being emotional because her father died just before the Tokyo Olympics. Three years ago. So apparently that's why she's crying. Nothing to do with having to give up her shot at an Olympic medal.

Fucking vile.

CaptainCrieff · 01/08/2024 11:52

This is horrific, is there any petition to allow Carini to fight again against an equal opponent, like her fellow competitors from all others countries?

it is so unfair

MarieDeGournay · 01/08/2024 11:52

Some reports that Carini's nose was broken, which is why she couldn't go on.
So a serious injury within the first few seconds..

From the

memorable and effective caption:

This on a fucking t-shirt.

Telegraph
What happened after the fight
As mentioned, fell to her knees in tears after the referee raised Khelif’s hand. The Algerian went to embrace the Italian twice but was dismissed, before both fighters left the ring and walked off. The next fight was ready to go immediately and the Eurosport coverage hasn’t mentioned it once...

Yes fraid so. Into the quarter finals

Unless the IOC back down.

Collidascope · 01/08/2024 11:57

Fucking disgusting that she was put in that position. All that graft and training and ambition sacrificed for a cheating turd of a man. Shame on everyone who allowed it.

They won’t. They really won’t.

Datun · 01/08/2024 11:59

If the IOC are so sure of their ground, then bloody tell us what DSD it is.

DSDs are not a secret. They're not mysterious. There are plenty of experts on them. And almost everybody believes that the DSD these people have got are specific to men.

If it isn't, let's fucking hear it.

They can’t, because we don’t know if they have a DSD because they haven’t been properly tested. They could have none. They could be trans. They could be neither.

ChaChaChooey · 01/08/2024 12:05

Fuck the Olympics for putting Carini in this dangerous position.

She is absolutely right to prioritise her own safety over this circus.

No it doesn’t. It just reveals they are male. They could have a DSD. They could just be chancers (fine line between the two). Chromosome testing wouldn’t determine which DSD they have, if any. It requires a complex work up of clinical examination and hormone testing.

RobinStrike · 01/08/2024 12:08

The IBA issued a statement saying the two male boxers did not fit the criteria for women's boxing. It's been stated several times they have XY chromosomes. The commentators aren't allowed to mention it as part of their contract with the IOC.

I can't believe the IOC has basically gagged media world-wide, so that the TV audiences are largely unaware of what's going on. And the BBC (and everyone else) just accepts it. WTAF?

Yes but the IBA was so dodgy at the time - and arguably still is - that there are unfortunately plenty of excuses for people to dismiss the IBA tests.
The whole thing is a mess - the IOC are playing by their own rules by accepting these two boxers as women, as they have no valid proof to the contrary.
This farce of a fight is a perfect illustration of the dangers involved, but at the expense of Carini's wellbeing and medal prospects.

Something similar happening to Michael Conlon at Rio, tears and all - in his case an obviously fixed match depriving him of his medal chances, and it opened up the corrupt IBA to public scrutiny. Maybe this will prompt a cleaning up of the IOC rules around sex, not gender, eligibility.
Too late for Carini, though, as it was for Conlin.

NotBadConsidering · 01/08/2024 12:14

Sean Ingle:

Utterly heartbreaking hearing the Italian boxer Angela Carini in the mixed zone. Blood on her shorts.

Broke down in tears as she explained that she had never been hit so hard before.

Added that she came her to honour her father, that she was a warrior, but had to stop.

They can’t, because we don’t know if they have a DSD because they haven’t been properly tested. They could have none. They could be trans. They could be neither.

But why all mystery, in that case?

If it literally is an F on their passport, and nothing more, then I'd like them to be accountable for that.

Because any amateur boxer could get an F on their passport. Is that what the Olympics is now according to the IOC?

fromorbit · 01/08/2024 12:17

The next match this afternoon will decide who faces Khelif on Saturday in quarter final. Either:

Hungary - HAMORI Anna Luca

Australia - WILLIAMSON Marissa

As the Captain of the Australian women's boxing team have already complained this could get even more controversial. The Hungarians are also unlike to sit quietly.
