Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

For those who can't bear to watch live reporting from Telegraph:

I have arrived at the North Paris Arena for the bout between Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who failed a sex test at last year’s world championships, and Italy’s Angela Carini. The press box, I can safely say, is a great deal fuller than you would usually expect for the women’s Olympic welterweight preliminaries.

I'm watching live. They are in the ring now

PoshCoffee · 01/08/2024 11:30

Please tell me the crowd are booing the bastard. I cannot bare to watch.

NotBadConsidering · 01/08/2024 11:30

Khelif has his hair in corn rolls and eyeliner. Clearly a woman🙄

NotBadConsidering · 01/08/2024 11:31

It’s over! Carini is out?! What happened? I think she’s pulled out it protest!

BezMills · 01/08/2024 11:32

Carini got clipped hard twice and both times put a hand up for headgear adjustment. The second time, the ref called it off

NotBadConsidering · 01/08/2024 11:32

Carini in tears. Refused to shake his hand at the end. Over after 46 seconds. She knew she wasn’t in a fair fight. Awful. Truly awful 🤬

fromorbit · 01/08/2024 11:34

Telegraph

A stoppage
Carini looks angry. There was an initial stoppage for a headguard issue...
And the fight is stopped!! Carini has pulled out, she looks very angry...
Fight abandoned, Khelif celebrates and Carini gives her the cold shoulder before falling to her knees and crying.

BezMills · 01/08/2024 11:34

Sorry on replay, the second time she was rocked, she put a hand up and went to her corner. her coach waved it off after a brief discussion, then the ref called it

Datun · 01/08/2024 11:35

The ref called it off??

PoshCoffee · 01/08/2024 11:35

Oh my god. I’m in tears for her.

BezMills · 01/08/2024 11:35

Bullshit fight, but glad she didn't appear to take much damage. Good shout to pull out, I could see her getting KO in R1 otherwise

Datun · 01/08/2024 11:36

Oh ok. It was her decision, ( albeit not really)

puffyisgood · 01/08/2024 11:36

That went about as well as could have been expected 🙄

Snowypeaks · 01/08/2024 11:36

And the idiot commentator wibbling on about Carini being emotional because her father died just before the Tokyo Olympics. Three years ago. So apparently that's why she's crying. Nothing to do with having to give up her shot at an Olympic medal.

She was devastated, but she did the right thing. No medal or victory is worth getting a serious injury for.

Edited to put correct number of years since Tokyo.

BezMills · 01/08/2024 11:37

The ref has to announce the fight is over but Carini's coach waved it off, then the ref called it, due to that

FunnyLady27 · 01/08/2024 11:39

Just watched it live on Eurosport, blink and you miss it, reporting was abysmal by a flippin woman , no mention on gender or anything, very sad very sad indeed

BezMills · 01/08/2024 11:40

As far as everyone on the telly is concerned, a woman went in the ring and was completely outclassed by another woman, probably emotional about her dad dying 4 years ago. You know how women get.
I'm raging

According to the Olympic site results, it was "ABD R1"

Olympic Boxing Schedule & Results | Paris 2024 (olympics.com)

ABD R1 = Abandonment Round 1.

It means that Carini withdrew voluntarily (although we know not really).

NotBadConsidering · 01/08/2024 11:42

Carini’s reaction said it all. She knew she was up against a man. She would have known leading up to it. She knew as soon as she started she had a man with a significant reach and more power landing on her face that she’s likely ever experienced in competition. It must have been overwhelming. Her refusal to acknowledge him and shouting “it’s not fair” says it all. Shame on the IOC.

INeedAPensieve · 01/08/2024 11:45

This is absolutely awful I'm devastated for her. I hope the protests continue tomorrow. This is actually sickening.

fromorbit · 01/08/2024 11:45

Telegraph
What happened during the fight?
Khelif landed one right hand and then was close to landing a flurry of punches, and shortly after, 35 seconds into the bout, Carini raised her hand and had her headgear checked, a slightly subdued look on her face as she chatted very briefly to her coaches.
She returned to fight and was immediately caught by a right hand by Khelif. Just a second later, she raises her glove again to withdraw. We’re now being informed it’s a suspected broken nose

Feeling sad for Angela right now and the next woman who has put up with this danger. Lots of outrage on X.

MarieDeGournay · 01/08/2024 11:46

Unfortunately I couldn't see it live, thanks for the updates. It's very unusual for a boxer to do that - sometimes the corner will throw in the towel [they literally do that] but the referee should step in if one of the boxers is so outclassed it's dangerous.
Normally there's be at least a standing count before the match was ended, one way or another.
Very strange outcome, looking forward to more details and analysis by neutral commentators within the sport - assuming they exist.
Poor Carini!
