The Bluestocking is reopening

It's time we reopened the Bluestocking, I think.

This is the FWR pub, situated in the charming village of Badley Fuckitt near the Shady Pines rest home. It has a cannon (for reasons lost in the mists of time), goats in the paddock next to the beer garden and a menu including many soups and cakes. It's open all hours, serving breakfast and tea to all weary women, in addition to being the ideal location to metaphorically drown your sorrows.

My eldest made them for her DoE, iirc it was diced skirt steak (I had to go to the butcher's during the beast from the East to get it for her). The recipe she followed claimed to be traditional but completely neglected to mention adding any seasoning, even salt. She made a lovely pastry but the nicely cooked filling was...well bland is an understatement.

I don't know if it's the sun or the alcohol but I find myself looking at my bare feet wondering why humans still have individual toes.

Why haven't we evolved into having one whole bendy bit at the end of our feet. Other than for wearing flip flops what do we need toes for now?

Having individual toes helps us regulate our balance more effectively. That's my understanding, anyway.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 31/07/2024 17:17

Plus it's satisfying to wiggle them. And it would be much harder to pick things up with your toes if they were fused together.

lcakethereforeIam · 31/07/2024 17:23

It would be useful if they were webbed, for swimming.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 31/07/2024 17:26

Stub a toe really badly and you realise why we need them. It's something I've done too many times and having one toe that doesn't work makes walking surprisingly difficult.

I have a relative whose toes are webbed. The two next to the big one on both feet is webbed like a duck

Now I thought the balance thing was related to losing toes so if you get frostbite and have your toes chopped off.you find it harder to not topple over.

You what now? Pick things up? Do people really have that much toe control?

lcakethereforeIam · 31/07/2024 17:33

So they can still wear flip-flops.

Would having webbed toes disqualify you from competing in swimming? Obviously this is something that could also disadvantage men, otherwise I would not even bother asking.

But would stubbing a multi toe rather than an individual toe hurt the same?

You can develop toe control, yes. In my teens I used to practice picking up stones in my toes and seeing how far, and how accurately, I could fling them. I got quite good at it too.

The middle toes on both my feet curl up both ways and I used think it was the same for everyone and was surprised to find that it really isn't.

If you had a multi toe it would probably be more like a hoof, which would look really weird.

DeanElderberry · 31/07/2024 17:40

Deffo with Bint on the joy of toe-wriggling and the enjoyable challenge of picking things up. I have to be careful though because Rosy affects to believe that they are a strange animal that needs slaying, which can be very painful. Bad panther!

Ah - are you one of the people with decorative foot fringes rather than proper toes? My dad was. Couldn't do a thing with them.

I can grip things under or between my toes, do a proper Mexican wave from little to big, a slightly wonkier one from big to little, lift my big toe while curling the rest under and vice versa, spread them all out side to side, lift them to almost 90°, and scrunch them right under. And stand on the tips.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 31/07/2024 17:47

@NoBinturongsHereMate Cool toes.

I also like spreading my toes out but haven't tried the Mexican wave or the other exercises. Must give them a go.

So you didn't have a tele either!

I am. They are the most useless things on my body!

Not at the time, no!

Tbh, once you start throwing stones with your toes, you want to throw them further and aim for targets, so it just develops into a Thing.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 31/07/2024 18:02

I never thought about throwing things with my toes. That's the entertainment sorted for my next trip to a pebbly beach.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/07/2024 18:03

Another toe-picker-upper here - though sadly one foot is suffering from peripheral neuropathy since cancer treatment years ago nowhere near the toes. Go figure.

On the other thread I tried to get the AI to imagine the Bluestocking, & there are some weird results there. This was the most normal so I thought I'd put it here. All the talk of Cornish pasties made the AI put it by the sea. That's nice for the summer. Maybe it moves about - does it? I've never been here before.

The Bluestocking is reopening
Boiledbeetle · 31/07/2024 18:04

So when are you pair three treating us pub patrons to the Blue stocking toe highland games?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 31/07/2024 18:06

Nice looking pub, I could settle in there for a while.

As for the toe highland games, it's been a while so I'll have to practice!

I think it's like the tardis. The inside is bigger than the outside and it moves around the universe. And unlike the doctors tardis still has the ability to blend into its surroundings.

(Is the Bluestocking the masters tardis?)

lcakethereforeIam · 31/07/2024 18:08

I can pick my knickers up with my toes, flick them up in the air and catch them. Saves me bending down.

I can't see that becoming part of the Olympics.
