The Bluestocking is reopening

It's time we reopened the Bluestocking, I think.

This is the FWR pub, situated in the charming village of Badley Fuckitt near the Shady Pines rest home. It has a cannon (for reasons lost in the mists of time), goats in the paddock next to the beer garden and a menu including many soups and cakes. It's open all hours, serving breakfast and tea to all weary women, in addition to being the ideal location to metaphorically drown your sorrows.

<passes capybara>
A wiser choice than the alpaca. Those buggers spit.

Anyway, can we have a joint birthday party? Do we need one large shared cake, or two smaller ones, suitably themed?

Thank you for the capybara. <cuddles rodent>

Ah, cake, yes. We'd better have several.

Strong opinions have been expressed about flavours of cake, not least by the birthday beetle herself.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/07/2024 08:15

Two large cakes, obviously.

I'd forgotten that it's Beetle's birthday week. I can't think how, as it's mine as well.

I've currently got ear-related vertigo, so it's a Citra or similar for me, sadly.

Probably an age thing! I've got to the point where I really have to think what age I actually am.

I had a consultant the other day go "so you're 52" and as i looked at him blankly he looked back at my paperwork and said "oh not yet, I'll put down 51 and three quarters then!"

FuzzyPuffling · 31/07/2024 08:19

My birthday is in January which is shite. Everyone is skint, everyone's on a diet, the weather is horrible and I always wanted a summer birthday. May I join in with an unofficial one please? Obviously without the extra year added.

The more the merrier! If it helps you feel better a late July/any of August birthday was horrible growing up as everyone was On holiday so you'd end up not having birthday parties

ErrolTheDragon · 31/07/2024 08:40

I could do with a half birthday too, my birthday is January and was also always in the holidays.

I'm all for half birthdays. More cake!

Same here but I'm also a twin. Growing up, no one had any money in January so we always got crap presents. We need an extra birthday in summer.

EdithStourton · 31/07/2024 09:05

June. June is the top month for birthdays. Midway between Christmases, and almost no one is on their hols.

Any volunteers for making the cakes? Will the order be for something smothered in ultra-fattening buttercream, or a more mature and subtle affair?

Though I say it myself, I am very at good chocolate cakes. A particular favourite is a marbled affair (the plain sponge can be flavoured with orange), covered in a ganache. The sponge has ground almonds in it.

Or for a more rustic look, I do one with a cake batter made with melted butter, and put thawed and drained frozen fruit on top (stoned plums work very well), and then sprinkle it with a layer of Demerara. The fruit means that you can kid yourself that it's healthy.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 31/07/2024 09:16

I have an admission to make - I don't like cake, never have.

On the other hand, crispy chicken wings, home made sausage rolls and other savoury delights are a very good thing.

BIWI · 31/07/2024 09:41

I do have a summer birthday. However, it's at the end of this month (Fuck me, I'm going to be 65 Shock - no idea how that happened!). That meant that when we were at school it was right at the end of the summer holidays so everyone forgot.

@Vegemiteandhoneyontoast but I thought we had something! 😩

Oh, I shall thoroughly enjoy seeing others eat cake, but I shall have something savoury 🍗🍕🍤

You could have tower of rice cakes smothered in vegemite. I mean cake is cake right! We can stick a candle in it!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 31/07/2024 10:50

Pizza should be classed as cake, after all it's got flour in it and it rises a bit in the oven.

I'll eat any cake put in front of me (caveat being beetles most definitely don't do lemon drizzle cake) , but any other cake I'll happily give a go!

I do a fantastic cherry Madeira cake myself.

Plus if you overload the cheese part you could class it as a savoury cheesecake.

Indeed!

And if I put pineapple on it, then it's definitely cake.

Boiledbeetle · 31/07/2024 10:57

Or, we just get you a large cheese truckle and pretend it's a cake made to look like cheese! We can have your cake during the cheese and crackers part of the day!

Cheese wedding cakes are a thing.

An acquaintance had one - local cheeses of various sizes in the usual tiered formation.

Commercial ones are available.

Cheese Wedding Cakes

A wedding cheese cake is a selection of cheeses stacked to give the effect of a traditional tiered wedding cake. We have been creating beautiful cheese wedding cakes for more than twenty years.
