As ever, the gerbils are yours to command...

Once I've got a command typed out in Futhark.

RoyalCorgi · 21/07/2024 10:20

Does everyone have to post in binary again?

I have a serious question - did anybody else hear Justine on the radio the other day talking about why Mumsnet is suing Open AI for scraping Mumsnet data to use in their models? I wondered if they might be considering suing Aston too.

DeanElderberry · 21/07/2024 10:32

oops wrong thread, so again

DeanElderberry · 21/07/2024 10:33

btw, I'll be sticking to English in future to avoid upsetting my voles (rotters though they are).

Chersfrozenface · 21/07/2024 10:35

@RoyalCorgi on the Corpus 2 thread in Site Stuff Justine said on 10th July that MN had sent a pre-action letter informing Aston "..of our plans to issue legal proceedings due to unacceptable breaches of our terms of use and infringement of database copyrights."

On the "Legal action against OpenAI and other scrapers" thread, on 19th July, she said,
"We're awaiting a response from Aston to our legal letter of complaint."

Boiledbeetle · 21/07/2024 12:00

Whilst the gerbils got on with making and designing t shirts for their adoring fans Grimbut, who was supposed to be doing the invoices, was sidetracked thinking about the next chapter in her epic book of gerbilness.

RethinkingLife · 21/07/2024 14:39

The Regional FoLD conference in late June must have been a hive of discussion. Did they have all sorts of unscheduled sessions to discuss Urgent Business?

Do we know what the final programme was and if Eden Palmer reverted to the original topic or presented on something else?

In the absence of any evidence I wonder if Eden cancelled "due to illness" again? Maybe she's as sick of her topic as we are? I know it's been suggested to Justine that she asks for the material used, but is there any other way we could find out what lies have been told about us?

GrimbutGerbil · 21/07/2024 15:45

Argh. Wrong username. Have asked MN to make me a gerbil on here.

Thank you for the picture @Boiledbeetle it is a very exact image of me at work

The final conference programme listed her as presenting on Wednesday.
Eden Palmer. A corpus-assisted discourse analysis of linguistic transphobia on a British parenting forum, 2010-2023.
Interestingly there's nothing, absolutely nothing, online about the conference. Usually with academic conferences there'll be at least a video of the key speakers, copies of presentations, links to research, but there's nothing. Most of the links on the IAFLL website don't work.

Well, the abstract of that, or a recording, might be a useful talking point in any future progression of MN's action in re: Aston.

This is excellent news - thank you.

Eep - go raibh míle maith agat @DeanElderberry: you just reminded me I’ve to do a lesson on DuoLingo before bed!

I don’t know, but I’m now ranked 14 in the Diamond League so with only 45 minutes left I should be safe…

And now to go & mind my plants in “Harry Potter: Magic Awakened”. Though the game will doubtless fling in creepy-crawlies as soon as I’m asleep 🤦‍♀️

lcakethereforeIam · 21/07/2024 22:57

@DeanElderberry sorry, I actually did translate it but I was being so anglo-normative I thought I'd made a mistake.

I've shut that bloody owl up....for today.

GrimbutGerbil · 22/07/2024 13:45

Hello fellow devotees of the owl, I am now back in my gerbil form and able to take requests or whatever.

ありがとごぜいます to MN towers for the name change.

Also, @Boiledbeetle your pictures are becoming predictive...

As well as writing, I woke up this morning with a very complete idea for something (a feminist something of course) that I want to sew. It's going to be a banner...
