Simple request for 'gender critical' activists

NoShortKing · 15/07/2024 12:51

I'm registered after an awful incident a few days ago, but I'm glad that it forced me to wait before posting as it's enabled me to be more circumspect about things. I'm trans (booo!) and started transitioning 17 years ago. I'm just a guy in the world, few know I'm trans, nobody cares, as it should be.

The other day I had a health appointment, unrelated to being trans or anything that could be relevant, yet the worker obviously had looked into my medical history, misgendered me (I'm a bald bloke with a beard ffs), asked me clearly inappropriate questions which was obviously from 'gender critical' rhetoric. I ended up leaving and now I have all the palaver of having to go through the practice manager to make a complaint.

Here's a really simple solution, if you're a 'gender critical' activist then realise that it's clearly inappropriate for you to work with trans people and ask for someone else to see them. If I had a problem with the existence of, I don't know, black people, tall people, I don't know, people with tattoos or something, then I would just ask someone else to see them. If in my job I was asked to see someone who was openly 'gender critical' I would just tell my lead that I would not be the best person to see them and she would have no problem with that.

I've talked with loads of people about this and nobody thinks this is unreasonable..and certainly in terms of the NHS something that is completely doable with a group that makes up 0.5% of the population.

Obviously, given that I'm in the hornet's nest, I won't be responding, just will leave that request to think about this if you're in a public facing job.

I make the fudge recipe from the Penguin cookbook - in the instructions it tells you to beat the fudge until it's thick - my mum told me to beat it until it feels grainy, then pour it into the tin - I find that this gives a texture that is much closer to tablet than to fudge.

Quarter pint of milk
1oz butter/margarine
Three quarters of a pound of sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa powder (not hot chocolate)
Pinch of salt
Half teaspoon vanilla essence

Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan, excepting the vanilla. Stir and heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture boils. Boil gently until it reaches the soft ball stage. Remove from heat, and allow to cool to 110 degrees F/45 degrees C. Then add the vanilla and beat hard until the mixture is thick (and grainy, as per mum's instructions - I dare not contravene these otherwise she will haunt me). Pour into a greased tin, mark in squares, leave overnight before cutting (if you have enough self control).

I have bad news, though - I have checked through all of mum's recipes, and the lemon fudge shortbread recipe isn't there. 😢I do recall asking mum about it, and her telling me it was a basic fudge recipe, with plenty of lemon juice. It was fairly soft too, so I don't think it got boiled for ages - maybe just briefly - and it wasn't beaten to make it tablet-like either.

I will check with my sister, in case she has it.

Nooooooooooooooo

You dangle deliciousness in front of me and then whip it away the next day.

You cruel, cruel, cruel woman.

Off with your head.

But lo! look what Google gave me

https://howtomakeeasyfudge.com/lemon-fudge/

I see no reason why it wouldn't work - I make a cheaty syllabub out of good quality lemon curd from the countrywomen's market, cream, and a little alcohol.

Stoppit!! I'm fat enough!!!

I'm gonna boast now though. My village shop sells the most incredible locally made tablet. I can eat it whenever I want with NO stirring! Yay!!!

which, naturally, is why I'm fat.

For fattening someone up, I've never seen anything to beat my homemade peanut tiffin. It's regular tiffin but made with peanut biscuits from Waitrose instead of digestives or rich tea, then a layer of peanut butter over the biscuity base & below the dark choc. You only have to look at it to put on half a stone.

Ohhhh that sounds wickedly delicious - or deliciously wicked - @ifIwerenotanandroid.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 17/07/2024 15:26

I promise you it is both, @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/07/2024 15:34

I’ve done a bit of googling - there are a number of lemon fudge recipes, and I found this lemon fudge slice recipe, and this lemon fudge icing recipe, which look promising.

A quick turn in the oven turns this melted white chocolate mixture into a moreish creamy lemon fudge.

You know when Harry Potter made Aunt Marge swell up? That's me on this thread

You left because a health professional didn’t play along with your fantasy of having changed sex and instead asked you relevant medical questions related to your sex?

Here here

That's NOT fudge. That's disgusting poison pretending to be chocolate before it pretends (identifying?) to be fudge 😡

No need to peel, zest, or even squeeze a lemon to make this easy lemon fudge. You simply melt white chocolate chips and some store-bought lemon curd together in the microwave.

All I can say is that if DH hasn't reacted to this thread by producing something scrumptious for when I get home on Friday, There. Will. Be. Words.

Transfudge?

DeanElderberry · 17/07/2024 17:03

tbf, it probably does deserve the transfudge name and I share the dislike of white 'chocolate' (not chocolate) but I do love good lemon curd, and adding something to solidify it seems like an idea.

Can you share your regular tiffin recipe? I’ve been on the lookout for one!

Hang on, what about Welsh Cakes?

Why was that marked sensitive content? 😆

I used your recipe this morning and made a batch. Absolutely delicious. Thank you Alison!

They are good aren't they? I freeze 3/4 of them and then they can be toasted and buttered as and when. Otherwise they'd all go in a couple of days.

Yeah half of them have gone already

Datun · 17/07/2024 17:44

Toasting and buttering Welsh cakes. It's like a suggestion from God.

... or maybe not God 😱

porridgecake · 17/07/2024 12:21

Yes. I make it with something called "Vegan Block". It is a really good substitute for butter and I use it for baking and spreading. I can't remember who makes it but it is in dark brown or black packaging and sold alongside the butter and margarine.

I've never seen that here in Canada, alas. There are lots of vegan butter substitutes, so hopefully they will do the job.

Transfudge?

I did think that but didn't want to get caught for using the t word. White chocolate is painful enough without the added scraping shudders

SinnerBoy · 17/07/2024 19:31

Tablet. The Scottish physicochemical impossibility of concentrating 2 lb of sugar into a 1 lb confection.

I have been using words where words need to be used, let them scrape never so scratchily. I was also delighted with the J K Rowling reference upthread.

mrshoho · 17/07/2024 20:35

Catching up on this thread and it really is the thread that just keeps on giving. Thank you dear vipers or are we transformed into hornets these days?

Well I had no ingredients for the millionaires shortbread but my daughter made a batch of plain and also another with lemon zest and pleasantly satisfied my yearnings.

But then the thread took a swerve and there's been all this talk of tablet. My mind went back to a long ago trip to the Lake District where we first tasted the most amazing homemade tablet. This is now on my to do list this weekend. Not to visit the Lake sadly but to attempt a scrumptious batch 😋
