Simple request for 'gender critical' activists

NoShortKing · 15/07/2024 12:51

I'm registered after an awful incident a few days ago, but I'm glad that it forced me to wait before posting as it's enabled me to be more circumspect about things. I'm trans (booo!) and started transitioning 17 years ago. I'm just a guy in the world, few know I'm trans, nobody cares, as it should be.

The other day I had a health appointment, unrelated to being trans or anything that could be relevant, yet the worker obviously had looked into my medical history, misgendered me (I'm a bald bloke with a beard ffs), asked me clearly inappropriate questions which was obviously from 'gender critical' rhetoric. I ended up leaving and now I have all the palaver of having to go through the practice manager to make a complaint.

Here's a really simple solution, if you're a 'gender critical' activist then realise that it's clearly inappropriate for you to work with trans people and ask for someone else to see them. If I had a problem with the existence of, I don't know, black people, tall people, I don't know, people with tattoos or something, then I would just ask someone else to see them. If in my job I was asked to see someone who was openly 'gender critical' I would just tell my lead that I would not be the best person to see them and she would have no problem with that.

I've talked with loads of people about this and nobody thinks this is unreasonable..and certainly in terms of the NHS something that is completely doable with a group that makes up 0.5% of the population.

Obviously, given that I'm in the hornet's nest, I won't be responding, just will leave that request to think about this if you're in a public facing job.

I apologise in advance but I feel the need to say something controversial here.

Lavender shortbread.

Anyone have a tried-and-tested recipe? Theoretically we’re a no-sugar household but I need the safety net of a good lavender shortbread recipe, in the event of shortbread emergencies.

popeydokey · 20/07/2024 10:24

Registered, plopped, told people their opinions won't be listened to, then complains as doesn't understand how to use the site Grin

The thing is this always plays out exactly like this! Bless the people who are so sure they know better than the silly mummies!

Anyway OP, if you think men are people with male bodies I don't know why you would think people here would disagree with you.

I'm yet to work out what "man" is supposed to describe and how a man is supposed to be different from a woman - don't worry, I'm not expecting you to help with this.

I was initially disappointed on opening this thread as title of the thread sounded like it was a request for GC Activists but turns out they didn’t want those GC activists after all Sad

But the shortbread recipes 😍 I often swap out some of the flour for fine semolina or rice flour both of which give a nice crunchy texture but never felt I had found the perfect shortbread recipe. This thread gives me several to try.

I knew exactly what the OPost would be like, just from seeing the title in the board list.

Simple request = passive aggressive
'gender critical' - only one side of the debate puts that in ''
activists = ditto & DARVO
the whole thing = drive-by scolding
OPoster will flounce & return

Honestly, some university should take me on as a linguistic analyst...

It took a lovely turn though, just as I was about to give up on it. Love won. Love of shortbread, kitchen equipment & fellow MNers. It should be in Classics.

Binglebong · 20/07/2024 12:45

I used to do a rosemary shortbread. That was addictive.

Thanks to you vipers I've ended up buying and opening a pack of cheap shortbread. My diet (like it ever existed!) is shot.

This thread is making me nostalgic for the days of the Midnight Misogynist when recipes and food chat was our weapon against the nonsense...that was until MN deemed it "not in the spirit" Hmm

I seem to remember very informative threads around fruit crumble and fruit curd...?

Alas many of those that took part are no longer of this parish, banished from the viper's nest to other parts of t'internet....<sobs while stuffing shortbread in mouth>...

Aston university might be in need of your help, I think the linguists they have are a bit pants.

Such an odd decision! Those recipes were very much in the spirit - you might almost call them definitive.

DialSquare · 20/07/2024 15:39

When life gives you spam, OP, make spam fritters.

Loving the recipes. It's my Dad's 80th birthday soon and he really is the man who has everything so I'm struggling to think of presents for him. This thread has given me the idea to make homemade shortbread.

SinnerBoy · 20/07/2024 16:26

Lavender or rosemary? I once had lavender ice cream, years ago, before I eschewed sugar. I remember it positively.

CocoapuffPuff · 20/07/2024 16:45

He'll love that, I'm sure, Dial. My Dad got chocolate brownies every birthday and scoffed the whole box himself. No sharing!

ArabellaScott · 20/07/2024 17:30

Are we hornets, now? It was hyenas last week. Dunno why the old faithful 'vipers' - or just 'bitches', why not say what you really mean has fallen out of favour.

I had lavender cake at a lavender farm once. It reminded me of soap.

Waitwhat23 · 20/07/2024 17:33

I had a really lovely lavender hot chocolate a while ago from a proper chocolate shop. I suspect it's quite a fine balancing act between 'ooh, that's a lovely wee hint of lavender' and 'urgh, soap'.

Viper 'till I die!

Funnily enough while typing that I was listening to a song with the lyrics 'I don't want my fangs too long'. I mean, who would?

I like rose petal tea, but it is reminiscent of drinking bath water

This is the thing, floral flavours need a skilled hand as they can so easily tip over into "I've just had a mouthful of granny's linen cupboard" territory.

Having said that when it's done well it can be delicious...I can still remember a chocolate and rosemary dessert I had years ago that walked the line extremely successfully.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2024 00:31

anyway if you do attempt the recipe I hope you also have the shortbread touch

So do I 🤞

I Am Not A Baker but both my Mum and MiL are. The touch is a real thing.

Warning! I am repeating things here that don't mean anything to me.

1- You cannot bake decent shortbread or short crust pastry if you have warm fingers. You are working the shortening into the flour with your fingers. If your fingers are warm then the shortening will melt before the crumb is formed. This Is A Bad Thing. The solution to this is to keep dripping your fingers into iced water while creating the crumb.

2 - Resist the urge to overwork the crumb. Don't try to achieve the perfect crumb. Stop as soon as the shortening is no longer visible. Otherwise you will start to melt the shortening which is A Bad Thing.

I offer this without prejudice.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2024 21:47

Thank you 🙏

These days you need to write an AI to do it for you.

Shouldn't be hard.
