Simple request for 'gender critical' activists

I'm registered after an awful incident a few days ago, but I'm glad that it forced me to wait before posting as it's enabled me to be more circumspect about things. I'm trans (booo!) and started transitioning 17 years ago. I'm just a guy in the world, few know I'm trans, nobody cares, as it should be.

The other day I had a health appointment, unrelated to being trans or anything that could be relevant, yet the worker obviously had looked into my medical history, misgendered me (I'm a bald bloke with a beard ffs), asked me clearly inappropriate questions which was obviously from 'gender critical' rhetoric. I ended up leaving and now I have all the palaver of having to go through the practice manager to make a complaint.

Here's a really simple solution, if you're a 'gender critical' activist then realise that it's clearly inappropriate for you to work with trans people and ask for someone else to see them. If I had a problem with the existence of, I don't know, black people, tall people, I don't know, people with tattoos or something, then I would just ask someone else to see them. If in my job I was asked to see someone who was openly 'gender critical' I would just tell my lead that I would not be the best person to see them and she would have no problem with that.

I've talked with loads of people about this and nobody thinks this is unreasonable..and certainly in terms of the NHS something that is completely doable with a group that makes up 0.5% of the population.

Obviously, given that I'm in the hornet's nest, I won't be responding, just will leave that request to think about this if you're in a public facing job.

To clarify. Just take em out. NOT clean em. Put em out by the road for the bin men to collect.

Maggots ARE repulsive but I've just dealt with a tick that crawled off the cat on my lap onto my hand (he's got more fur than me, it must have been feeling lazy) so I'm feeling all jacked up on adrenaline now. Although I did panic and race through to drop it on a saucer before it bit me and then melt candle wax on it. So...shrugs. It is now an ex-tick. I'm a Great Hunter. Or summat...

Apparently the thread has moved on.

And it's a much better thread than anticipated. Thank you ladies!

Now I've just found a hedgehog on the back doorstep. It's a zoo here.
Still, I made Highlanders so the world is GOOD.

It's a shi-tzu. Oh wait, that's the wrong joke. Grin

Some of you are Philistines.
Flour, butter, sugar, salt.
The End.

Thanks Thank You GIF by PuyduFou

Perfect Mumsnet.

Not generalising about sweet treats or naming an individual.
Not specific about how much of each ingredient.
Also chippy.
And a recipe in a drive by scolding.

PS has anyone tried adding lemon zest to their shortbread? In there any reason not to?

Yes. It's delicious. HTH.

kiterunning · 17/07/2024 08:16

Very helpful and educational post. Thank you!
Apart from the OP obvs.

If we're talking animals, I'm in Portugal and have just seen a van with a logo of an angry looking bumble bee, wielding an oil can.

WandsOut · 17/07/2024 08:48

We need a special recipe for Scolding Scones.

Definitely need treacle in them to seal our mouths shut with delicious goodness.

TWETMIRF · 17/07/2024 08:57

Can we stick with Scotland but change to tablet? Any good recipes welcomed as are samples if you wish me to assess your tablet making skills

Waitwhat23 · 17/07/2024 09:10

Husband makes nice tablet but can't face the constant stirring.

I gave some tablet to an English friend years ago to try and he accused me of trying to poison him (because of the sugar, not the recipe)! 😄

Hang on, what about Welsh Cakes?

I make Welsh cakes sometimes, in my Le Creuset knock-off lidded frying pan. Which weighs an absolute tonne!

Chersfrozenface · 17/07/2024 09:43

Welsh cakes, food of the gods.

I'm not surprised by the sensitive content filter on that given the presence of (gags) raisins in that receipe.

Stoppit!! I'm fat enough!!!

I'm gonna boast now though. My village shop sells the most incredible locally made tablet. I can eat it whenever I want with NO stirring! Yay!!!

which, naturally, is why I'm fat.

Aldi used to have tablet, wonderful stuff. haven't seen it for some years, and am inclined to blame Brexit which has stopped do many UK food exports. And I can see why getting certification for tablet in these health conscious days might be a challenge.

For a nice sugar-free treat, why not potato cakes? Cold mashed potatoes, a pinch of salt, as much flour as they can take to make a solid but pliable dough, patted flat to ca 75mm thick, cut to size, cooked on the pan, eaten with BUTTER!

duc748 · 17/07/2024 10:15

And chopped parsley, surely, in potato cakes? Maybe some grated cheese too.

If it helps I make this but not fried, I put it on toast and pop cheese and tabasco on top and grill it. We had it last night for tea.

I made Girdle Scones (and yes, that is apparently the right spelling here) last weekend which are very tasty. Savoury rather than sweet, split in half and spread liberally with butter.

I have to avoid tattie scones as I am absolutely addicted to them. I can never get the salt level right if I'm making them myself though.

DeanElderberry · 17/07/2024 10:27

That sounds good. Makes me wonder about trying a potato cake pizza base - no reason why not. Up there with the boxty tofu wrap I once had in Co Leitrim as fusion food.

For some reason I hardly ever make boxty, only regular potato cakes. Must be more open to change and try to be a better person in future.

INeedAPensieve · 17/07/2024 10:27

Mrs Tilly's does really good tablet, made near Falkirk so close to DHs old neighbourhood.

I've never found home made tablet that is PERFECT; it is a difficult one to get right. Mrs Tilly's is up there.

I also concur about lemon zest in shortbread it is delicious. AHH us Scots do do the best sugary treats!!!

Has anybody ever made vegan shortbread? Is it even shortbread without butter? I'm allergic to dairy but have never attempted it. I have assumed butter is what gives it that distinctive taste.

Yes. I make it with something called "Vegan Block". It is a really good substitute for butter and I use it for baking and spreading. I can't remember who makes it but it is in dark brown or black packaging and sold alongside the butter and margarine.
