Simple request for 'gender critical' activists

I'm registered after an awful incident a few days ago, but I'm glad that it forced me to wait before posting as it's enabled me to be more circumspect about things. I'm trans (booo!) and started transitioning 17 years ago. I'm just a guy in the world, few know I'm trans, nobody cares, as it should be.

The other day I had a health appointment, unrelated to being trans or anything that could be relevant, yet the worker obviously had looked into my medical history, misgendered me (I'm a bald bloke with a beard ffs), asked me clearly inappropriate questions which was obviously from 'gender critical' rhetoric. I ended up leaving and now I have all the palaver of having to go through the practice manager to make a complaint.

Here's a really simple solution, if you're a 'gender critical' activist then realise that it's clearly inappropriate for you to work with trans people and ask for someone else to see them. If I had a problem with the existence of, I don't know, black people, tall people, I don't know, people with tattoos or something, then I would just ask someone else to see them. If in my job I was asked to see someone who was openly 'gender critical' I would just tell my lead that I would not be the best person to see them and she would have no problem with that.

I've talked with loads of people about this and nobody thinks this is unreasonable..and certainly in terms of the NHS something that is completely doable with a group that makes up 0.5% of the population.

Obviously, given that I'm in the hornet's nest, I won't be responding, just will leave that request to think about this if you're in a public facing job.

(I'm not vegan or diary free. But I've cooked some of these with really good results and had a lot of positive comments from non vegan / diary frees too).

I SWEAR by this site for all things sweet vegan / diary free

https://bakedbyclo.com/

Every recipe I've done from it has been excellent. I've not done shortbread, but there is a number of vegan shortbread recipes on it.

Thank you! I'll need to modify recipes for other allergies and to make them gluten and sugar free. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't.
I have created recipes for fantastic pies, banana bread and chocolate chip cookies, but my cakes and other cookies need work.

Flora plant butter maybe? Does a pretty good 'buttered' spinach

Probably not available in Canada, or at least not locally. I have never seen it or heard of it.

Barbie222 · 15/07/2024 21:44

I do wish the walnuts could be left out, you know. I have allergies. But whenever anything's flavoured with coffee.... there they are.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/07/2024 21:49

Coffee shortbread sans walnuts is just as good, and it is so easy to make, @Barbie222.

TinselAngel · 15/07/2024 21:51

I love shortbread.

TinselAngel · 15/07/2024 21:54

Now I want shortbread.

Waitwhat23 · 15/07/2024 21:56

At the risk of sounding wanky, Waitrose do a very nice coffee shortbread (no walnuts).

HarrytheHobbit · 15/07/2024 21:57

A buttery melt in the mouth shortbread is a thing of beauty.

ChewtonRoad · 15/07/2024 21:59

I think my niece uses Naturli vegan spread for her nondairy shortbread, and it's pretty good, but butter does make it better.

I use custard powder rather than plain cornflour at times to give a bit of vanilla flavour, although ground rice does give that nice crunch. I've also been known to make cardamom shortbread or add orange zest to the plain product and drizzle a bit of plain chocolate over it for extra lushness.

The OP is welcome to take her or his scolding elsewhere and get stuffed.

The chocolate drizzle is fantastic on shortbread.
I have seen candied fruit in it at Xmas and dried cranberries.

terryleather · 15/07/2024 22:20

It has never occurred to me that I could make coffee shortbread but now I can think of little else...

Snowypeaks · 15/07/2024 22:23

Some of you are Philistines.
Flour, butter, sugar, salt.
The End.

CocoapuffPuff · 15/07/2024 22:35

My Mum used to make little biscuits with custard powder along with the flour. Very light and crisply flaky in texture. I can see custard powder working beautifully in shortbread.

Oh and she did something like Millionaires Shortbread but with a mint cream topping instead of caramel. My sis has her recipe book, I'll have to ask her if that one is in there. It was so bloody good. Like a filling after eight.

This sounds like unfortunately the OP encountered an unprofessional bully and a complaint is justified - but against that individual not gender critical people in general.

Most gender critical feminists are perfectly capable of being professional and courteous (without losing their grip on biological reality when it's relevant).

I agree with @ErrolTheDragon that there may be the possibility that the HCW was rude. If they had negative issues about trans people then they should opt to refer them onto another HCW. The person may just be unpleasant rather than gender critical.

I hate this thread and all who post on her. My diet has been torpedoed!

Millionaires Shortbread... nom nom nom.

RainWithSunnySpells · 15/07/2024 22:53

Oh flip, a double post. I guess I'll have to eat some goodies as a penance. 🍪

@NoShortKing - I think it is utterly hypocritical for you to say that trans people should be able to refuse treatment from a healthcare professional because of their beliefs, but trans activists say that no biological woman can insist on having intimate care from another biological female. And lesbians cannot have female only groups, or say that they don’t want penetrative sex from a biological male simply because he has declared himself to be a woman and a lesbian.

Hell, women aren’t allowed female only loos or changing rooms, but you want to discriminate against anyone who doesn’t enthusiastically espouse your (mistaken) belief that humans can change sex.

Exactly!👍

Me too Terry, me too

NotEvenTheRainHasSuchSmallHands · 16/07/2024 07:02

FFS, I can't believe how insensitive some of you are.

Does no one even CARE about those of us on diets? Now all I can think about is shortbread. 😭

I love this thread...
OP:comes on for a rant, hoping for some outrage.
Rest of the thinking world: makes shortbread.

Politicians, take note!

BezMills · 16/07/2024 10:03

I think we covered
'I'm sorry that happened'
'medical professionals are not immune from being badduns'
'it's not reasonable for medical professionals to tell their leadership team they refuse to deal with trans patients'
'some questions seem mad, but need to be asked, thanks in major part to trans ideology insisting on incorrect sex markers in medical records'
in the first couple of pages, as well as
'why are you here telling us off, make a complaint to the relevant authorities'.

All that's left is repetition, and shortbread.

CocoapuffPuff · 16/07/2024 10:09

Can I add Highlanders to the recipe book were collating. Much easier to handle than some shortbread doughs and that demerara sugar edge is the Bees knees. Truly.

Highlander Shortbread

The very best shortbread in my humble opinion. Recipe for traditional Highlander Shortbread, directly from Scotland.
