Simple request for 'gender critical' activists

NoShortKing · 15/07/2024 12:51

I'm registered after an awful incident a few days ago, but I'm glad that it forced me to wait before posting as it's enabled me to be more circumspect about things. I'm trans (booo!) and started transitioning 17 years ago. I'm just a guy in the world, few know I'm trans, nobody cares, as it should be.

The other day I had a health appointment, unrelated to being trans or anything that could be relevant, yet the worker obviously had looked into my medical history, misgendered me (I'm a bald bloke with a beard ffs), asked me clearly inappropriate questions which was obviously from 'gender critical' rhetoric. I ended up leaving and now I have all the palaver of having to go through the practice manager to make a complaint.

Here's a really simple solution, if you're a 'gender critical' activist then realise that it's clearly inappropriate for you to work with trans people and ask for someone else to see them. If I had a problem with the existence of, I don't know, black people, tall people, I don't know, people with tattoos or something, then I would just ask someone else to see them. If in my job I was asked to see someone who was openly 'gender critical' I would just tell my lead that I would not be the best person to see them and she would have no problem with that.

I've talked with loads of people about this and nobody thinks this is unreasonable..and certainly in terms of the NHS something that is completely doable with a group that makes up 0.5% of the population.

Obviously, given that I'm in the hornet's nest, I won't be responding, just will leave that request to think about this if you're in a public facing job.

I do wonder if it NITS. As a PP suggested.

Feckedupbundle · 15/07/2024 18:54

I love shortbread. DD1,who has no interest in baking, once made some at school. It was some of the best shortbread that I'd ever eaten.
I'm going to have to try all these suggested recipes.
Thanks wims.

Replace 50g of the flour in a standard shortbread recipe with cornflour and you'll have lovely biscuits.

What was the point of a drive-by post by the OP? Just chastising Mumsnetters in case of wrong think?

I think the point was to get the "hornets" buzzing while lurking and feeling the usual trollish satisfaction at creating controversy.

Has anybody ever made vegan shortbread? Is it even shortbread without butter? I'm allergic to dairy but have never attempted it. I have assumed butter is what gives it that distinctive taste.

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 15/07/2024 19:22

Maaaaate.

Those shortbread recipes are off the scale. And if I try them, so will I be.

Yes. I sometimes make mine with "buttery stuff in a tub" ( for want of a better term) and it is fine. It mixes easily too! ( And the vicar bloody loves it! )

Thanks. That's good to know. Xmas isn't quite the same without shortbread.

In a medical situation, knowing the biological sex of the patient can be pertinent depending on the situation. Without knowing more than the vague OP, it is impossible to tell if that was the case here or not.

ETA - it is entirely possible that the medical person in question was not an activist of any kind. They really just could have been doing their job properly and professionally. For example, understanding the patient's medical history so they don't give treatment that is contraindicated for any reason.

Edited

I can well imagine a scenario where the questions were innappropriate.

There was a stage in my early twenties when I had health issues which meant going to the GP a lot to try to fix it. Every bloody time they wanted me to take a chlamydia test even though I wasn't actually having sex. Also, even though I knew I wasn't pregnant and that wasn't causing the issue they kept saying "maybe it's pregnancy". (part of the issue was I had to move and therefore move GPS several times and my notes didn't come with me. So each time we had to go through the "this seems like pregnancy" ritual.

Basically - because I was biologically female, certain assumptions were made and they weren't prepared to listen to me properly. Because women can get pregnant and women do lie about having sex. Therefore...

But this wasn't trans phobia (I am not trans). It was because I was biologically female...

The phrase which really jumps out at me from this thread is "Coffee and walnut shortbread"

lcakethereforeIam · 15/07/2024 19:48

@XChrome I'm probably just going to demonstrate my ignorance of dairy allergies/intolerance and shortbread but would clarified butter be an option?

RufustheFactualReindeer · 15/07/2024 19:52

I was watching the thread in order to see the deletion message as i was sure a thread created by someone, who had no intention of doing anything but plopping a telling off, would be deleted as not in the spirit at the very least

obviously wrong on that one…but the recipes are great!

I can't see why it wouldn't work, but there's only one way to find out...

DeanElderberry · 15/07/2024 19:57

A friend of mine moved to Cork. She hurt her knee and went to GP who asked her to remove all her clothes above the waist. She declined but felt rather confused, as she told us on her weekend visit back to Dublin. We all thought it sounded odd and wondered had she misunderstood. The following week, back in Cork, she mentioned the matter to one of the admin staff at her workplace. 'Oh No!' said the woman, ' You surely didn't go to Stripper Barry!'.

It was at least another ten years, maybe fifteen, before Stripper Barry ended up in court and got removed from the register of GPs - he'd abused so many women in that time.

So I don't completely dismiss the possibility of a medical professional acting inappropriately, while still knowing that there are very few medical issues where a person's sex, and the very strong medication required to make a female-bodied person bald and bearded, wouldn't be relevant to a course of treatment.

Waitwhat23 · 15/07/2024 20:09

I'm shite at making shortbread (it's always doughy) but my auntie's shortbread, which is the best, has semolina in it to make it deliciously crunchy.

And I'm sure I'll see this thread on Twitter at some point. It's so transparent.

FrippEnos · 15/07/2024 20:13

Thank you OP.

You have said so much whilst in fact saying nothing at all.

Flora plant butter maybe? Does a pretty good 'buttered' spinach

mrshoho · 15/07/2024 20:16

There's someone down right cruel on this thread and I'm tempted to name and shame. Posting that filth about something called millionaires shortbread. I can't unsee it and it's just bloody unfair. I haven't even so much as a rich tea in my biscuit tin. What's a girl to do?

Great question and not ignorant at all. Most of the milk protein is removed by the clarifying process, but I can still react to it. I imagine the casein content varies according to how strict the processing is. They have to remove all the milk solids that settle to the bottom during the process. I could tolerate a little, but you need lots to make shortbread.

My bet is they asked if OP might be pregnant. They ask that of all sorts of inappropriate people including OAPs and (actual) men. The latter thanks in part to the transgender movement itself insisting that medical records be falsified so doctors can't be sure of anyone's sex even if it says M on the record. Though in this case OP is actually female, and we know some TM do actually get pregnant, so it could be appropriate to ask.

Though there are a range of things a doctor might validly ask about that a patient inclined to take offence might take offence about.

HarrytheHobbit · 15/07/2024 20:36

This is going well for you OP isn't it?

Yeah, that could be it.

One of the more bizarre changes has been that abortion clinics started referring to pregnant women as pregnant people so as not to offend the trans community. 🙄
We aren't even allowed to own our own biological reality anymore.

Make Millionaires Shortbread, of course.

D'uh.

JanesLittleGirl · 15/07/2024 21:11

DH sometimes makes shortbread. It is horrible, dry and tasteless. He copies his mother's recipe. Her shortbread is also dry and tasteless. I have sent a link to this thread to DH in vainglorious hope that he will produce some edible shortbread.

Every recipe I've done from it has been excellent. I've not done shortbread, but there is a number of vegan shortbread recipes on it.
