I have been chewing the cud over this issue for some time, and I think there is a substrate to the situation which neither we nor men can easily see, but means that there is an advantage to the arguments of the 1%.
We all know about the patriarchy, the establishment of the rule of men, that reason for the transmen being barred from inheritance of positions important for people who value such things, that reason for women being barred from certain jobs. It can, and has been challenged, for instance with the ordination of women in the Anglicans, though allowances have had to be made for men who can't accept it.
We all know about misogyny, and its ruderies, and pay gaps. It can be met with education, but can still be omitted from hate crimes.
In this thread, the substrate has been hinted at, one poster has even said that woen are not properly human, but we need a way to address it.
I grew up with sisters and never a thought given to not being human, so it's come as a bit of a shock. But it has been there a long time. Why on earth, pondered St Augustine, when he'd dumped the mother of his son at the behest of his mother, did God feel it necessary to create women, when all that was needed to be human was contained in men. And he answered himself that it was to provide more men. Living in a slave society, the support subhuman argument didn't occur.
For far too many of us, men and women, men have been seen as the default human, and women an addendum, to be useful. To the AngloSaxons, mann was not a sex class, it meant both of us, wirman and wifman, so the default was both. We aren't going to get that word back any time soon, but we need to get the idea back, that human rights include all of us, representation of both tax paying classes, and not the trampling of women's rights and needs under the advancing tiny army of large sized stiletto heeled jillboots.
But there needs to be a simple word for that state of functioning as if the natural state of human is male, when it isn't. And it certainly exists, since the opposition to it is so violent.
