It's a headline in the Telegraph. Unfortunately when I archive it it goes to an article about that twat Ashworth refusing to answer. So, I've screenshot the headline

'Always clear' utter rubbish. He is gaslighting. I don't believe or trust him. What about the labour plan to remove clauses in the new guidelines for schools? children should not be taught people may be born in the wrong body. They want that out.

ScrollingLeaves · 02/07/2024 09:02

That’s not what Bridget Phillipson said here six days ago:

Wikipedia states how much good Starmer previously did for women when working as a lawyer. I’m confused 🫤

Edit: deleted, soz, missed the sarcasm.

That Labour List article is even more clear than I realised, @EasternStandard thanks again for posting it..

So it looks very much like Labour did support clarification, caved in under pressure from LGTB+ Labour (and I'm going to stick my neck out and guess from Stonewall too) and now they're trying to pretend they don't think it's necessary.

We need a new word for shifty.

I dunno. I'm happy with 'very fucking shifty indeed'. 🤔🤷‍♀️

Helleofabore · 02/07/2024 09:07

so, have labour generally read the room on women’s and girl’s concerns finally and are using clearer language? Is this a slip up by Starmer?

It is gas lighting to state he has been ‘clear’. That is very dishonest. The women in his party have asked for clarity repeatedly. Now he gives it but with a dishonest twist at the end.

The reaction will be interesting.

Beowulfa · 02/07/2024 09:10

I learnt in The Women That Wouldn't Wheesht that Helen Steel (female half of the McLibel duo) was active in the protests against the Scottish governement's gender madness. Now surely Starmer, who famously provided pro bono legal advice during McLibel, knows that she is a woman of great moral integrity? Why can't he listen to her?

I like this article from Jean Hatchet, although it doesn't mention his latest positioning, she probably wrote it earlier

https://thecritic.co.uk/the-thorn-in-starmers-side/

I hope she amends it or writes another.

Brilliant article.

I don't trust KS one little bit. He has form for manipulating his words plus its a bit late in the day to suddenly start coming out with this. It feels like a deliberate attempt to woo women now that he's come under pressure. I'm not falling for it.

Here is in this video starting from 35 minutes in, of Bridget Phillipson being interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg who specifically asks he whether Labour would retain newly drafted school guidelines which say children should not be taught the concept of gender identity [which can mean some children think of themselves as being in the wrong sort of body because they do not fit a masculine/feminine stereotype.]

After a lot of waffle, in which she avoids answering the question, B P then says the guidelines have drifted into ‘partisan language’.

By roughly 37:55 minutes in, her eyes are flashing, and she is talking about trans people’s ‘existence’ and that trans people are ‘vulnerable’.

This.
It really is too late in the day; there's no way it can be a properly thought-out, heart-felt belief. And I seriously doubt he has the party behind him.

ScrollingLeaves · 02/07/2024 09:34

Bridget Phillipson speaking to Laura Kuenssberg was only just about 10 days ago.

I'm guessing that somewhere in Labour HQ, someone has looked at some polling results and realised that actually, no, they can't count on the votes of left wing women. Now, they're reverse ferreting all over the shop.
I don't trust a single word of it

Well something doesn't add up.

(And no, they can't count on this left wing woman. Apparently I'm a terrible dinosaur Hmm)

GiveMeSpanakopita · 02/07/2024 09:35

I just had a good conversation with a Labour canvasser on my doorstep in which he said that Kier's statement is 'closest to the definitive the Labour position on this'.

I said to him that women's rights are a wedge issue: it's not bigotry, it's a question of our rights and safety. I asked him if anyone else had brought up this issue on the doorstep and he said "YES! It is a wedge issue, you are right."

I asked him if Labour high command was aware of the strength of feeling on the doorstep and he said "YES, they are, very much so, it is being fed back from a significant number of constituencies".

In my constituency the vote will be incredibly tight and is very much in play so I found this all very interesting.

Also, for some previous posters who lack the knowledge: 'tabloid' refers to the size of a paper's page, print layout and also sometimes to editorial guidelines around commentary vs reportage. The Guardian is a tabloid. The Telegraph is not.

Tabloid is a technical term, it is not a way of indicating whether you like a particular paper or not.

So sorry. that was the wrong video I posted about school guidelines. Here is the correct one. Laura Kuenssberg interviewing Bridget Phillipson about new school guidelines regarding not teaching children the concept of gender identity.

35 minutes in.

Just a reminder. This was a week ago. You can see by the way that he walks out of the interview that Keir doesn't care and isn't interested. He just wants the problem to go away.

Completely agree!

As for ‘always’, it was only a few days ago that Kier was completely unable to reassure Jane about this on R5.

  1. Raynor’s very clear that TWAW,
  2. Phillipson is on record as saying TW should use women’s facilities,
  3. not heard Lammy backing out of his ‘rights hoarding dinosaurs’ comment,
  4. and of course we know that Kier is on record saying some women (not transwomen?) have a penis. He’s happy to use ‘woman’ when he means ‘transwoman’
I really hope I’m wrong, and the incoming Labour gov is willing to actually protect women’s rights. However, I’m with JKR. I don’t trust them to be planning more than what they need to say to get women to vote for them
lamppostliving · 02/07/2024 09:46

What does it matter if he says this if he has no intention to pass legislation to clarify the law ( Labour are clear that they will not do this), and they have no intention of making it a requirement to provide singje sex spaces to women who want them) and if he is going to make getting a GRC easier?

These words are not matching his clearly stated intended actions ( and inactions).

It’s all fine already - tell that to the nurses Kier!

I was not being sarcastic. I cannot see a problem with allowing people who have been through the change to have access to women’s toilets. Being sarcastic and this whole attitude lately of fighting all the time is not helpful to anyone.

Katie Dolatowski illustrates the issue rather well. If you’re not familiar, look her him up!

What change, exactly?

lemonstolemonade · 02/07/2024 09:51

I've written to Wes Streeting a few times on this - I'm not in his constituency and so not expecting a reply. But Labour will not field anyone here, so it is my only way of making my opinion known. I haven't added my constituency, just so that he don't know I am in a safe Tory seat that Labour will never win!

What change? There is no 'change' necessary beyond saying 'I want to'.

Are you happy for Sarah Jane Baker to use women's toilets? The men in the nurses changing rooms?
