I just had a good conversation with a Labour canvasser on my doorstep in which he said that Kier's statement is 'closest to the definitive the Labour position on this'.
I said to him that women's rights are a wedge issue: it's not bigotry, it's a question of our rights and safety. I asked him if anyone else had brought up this issue on the doorstep and he said "YES! It is a wedge issue, you are right."
I asked him if Labour high command was aware of the strength of feeling on the doorstep and he said "YES, they are, very much so, it is being fed back from a significant number of constituencies".
In my constituency the vote will be incredibly tight and is very much in play so I found this all very interesting.
Also, for some previous posters who lack the knowledge: 'tabloid' refers to the size of a paper's page, print layout and also sometimes to editorial guidelines around commentary vs reportage. The Guardian is a tabloid. The Telegraph is not.
Tabloid is a technical term, it is not a way of indicating whether you like a particular paper or not.
