It's a headline in the Telegraph. Unfortunately when I archive it it goes to an article about that twat Ashworth refusing to answer. So, I've screenshot the headline

Yes he's floundering. And obfusticating. He didn't specify which spaces at all.

And he's a lawyer. Captain Flipflop is absolutely famous for saying one thing one day and then totally backtracking the next day, and let's listen for the deafening howls of Stonewall and Mermaids....?

Gosh. Aren't they quiet? It's like they know and have been promised that he's just saying it to get into power.

He's following Blair's (and Cameron's) example of being a wholly untrustworthy used car salesman who will say whatever helps his interests moment to moment.

Judge Judy Eye Roll GIF

Cue fast phone calls from Labour HQ to those orgs: 'quick, performatively kick off! They're on to us!'

They really don't seem to get that women are sentient beings.

FigRollsAlly · 02/07/2024 08:12

Yes, if he’s always said this he must have been saying it in Klingon or something because, Keir, nobody heard you! Or maybe this is a case of your truth being different from ours.

InvisibleBuffy · 02/07/2024 08:19

I'm guessing that somewhere in Labour HQ, someone has looked at some polling results and realised that actually, no, they can't count on the votes of left wing women. Now, they're reverse ferreting all over the shop.
I don't trust a single word of it

Boudiccaofsteel · 02/07/2024 08:19

ArabellaScott · 02/07/2024 07:40

Yes. Loud and clear. If you care about women tell us how you'll fix things.

Because currently every fucker, including your pals at Stonewall, think men DO have the right to use women's spaces.

There's a bunch of nurses would like to know how you're going to fix it so there's no men in their changing rooms.

Exactly and another bunch of cowardly firms that avoid any controversy by just making everything mixed sex ...

if we actually had a BBC and other press that considers women human this would have been a question time special where they were all grilled on this. Preferably by Ben Coooer KC
i find this a difficult topic to explain to people as there are so many strands to go through .. the convoluted legislation, the overlay of case law, the capture of every branch of government, health and education and professional regulators . The bias of the mainstream media. The average person in the street has not got a clue what is going on and it is so unbelievable that we have rapists in women's prisons that you sound like a tin foil hat conspiracy theorist.

it is a total failure of democracy that this is not front and centre of the election campaign

There is no legal adjustment to do this so what are they talking about?

It’s just words without legislative change

It’s just words without legislative change

Absolutely. The issue for me is the lack of legal consensus about what the Equality Act means by 'sex' and specifically what is changed by possessing a GRC.

It's the law that's the problem. Tossing in the word 'biological' - which as far as I'm aware, isn't mentioned in the EA - doesn't change the fact that the law isn't clear.

Labour could promise to clarity the Equality Act, and a year or so ago (if I remember correctly) they were broadly supportive of the idea doing so. Now they say it's not necessary. Why?

Boudiccaofsteel · 02/07/2024 08:22

SpanielintheWorks · 02/07/2024 06:58

perhaps the question the press should ask is will you make Rosie Duffield the Minister for Women?

Or would he go for Eddie Izzard?

If Labour win I think all women should identify as non binary two spirited gender fluid double trans otherkin and then and only then we might be treated seriously

can someone design us a special flag

I remember being lambasted for suggesting that had been dropped by usual posters

But I do recall the support however, and some time after that a press release came from Labour LGBT and they strongly condemned Starmer etc

So it could be down to lobbying

Boudiccaofsteel · 02/07/2024 08:27

Actually let's challenge Starmer to appear with Rosie Duffield and to confirm that he will make her Minister for Women . If he doesn't he is frit

ArabellaScott · 02/07/2024 08:27

NoWordForFluffy · 02/07/2024 07:59

Tabloid has a specific meaning, which The Telegraph doesn't fall into.

'These newspapers are small, those ones are far away'.

So it could be down to lobbying

It would seem so. And it's become pretty clear which lobby groups have Labour's ear and which ones don't.

EasternStandard · 02/07/2024 08:29

@Floisme the support was April 2023

Then this lobbying https://labourlist.org/2023/04/lgbt-labour-urges-members-to-lobby-party-to-oppose-equality-act-change/?amp

Then Dodds in July

I was pretty sure at that point the support had been dropped. Cue loads of pro Labour reposting the Dodds statement and saying no they support it

He doesn’t intend to change anything just get through the GE

Floisme · 02/07/2024 08:32

Thank you @EasternStandard

Unless he commits to clarifying the Equality Act it's all just flannel.

Shortshriftandlethal · 02/07/2024 08:34

waltzingparrot · 02/07/2024 01:06

Do you believe that he believes that?

I think the sub text is that men with a GRC don't have an automatic right to use female toilets, but if individual service providers choose to do otherwise and permit that, then that would be within the law. They seem to be abdicating responsibility onto individual employers, businesses, providers etc

OP posts:
MrsWhattery · 02/07/2024 08:34

*It is great if he is saying that now.

BUT he is clearly lying about ‘always said’.*

I wonder if he thinks he’s said that before because he’s said “women” before and in his head that means biological women. If that’s the case he’s a dreadful terf instinctively…

Something behind the scenes is going on definitely but I’d be surprised if even flip-flop Keir isn’t aware of what most people think, the science and the emerging sexual offending stats on this. If he wasn’t actually clued up he’d just go full TWAW like David Lammy and Angela Rayner.

Not defending his failings and still agonising about my vote.

borntobequiet · 02/07/2024 08:38

Gormenghastly · 02/07/2024 01:34

you are aware that the tabloids have political bias?

yawn.

You are aware that the Telegraph isn’t a tabloid?

Have a nap if you’re tired.

Floisme · 02/07/2024 08:39

That Labour List article is even more clear than I realised, @EasternStandard thanks again for posting it..

So it looks very much like Labour did support clarification, caved in under pressure from LGTB+ Labour (and I'm going to stick my neck out and guess from Stonewall too) and now they're trying to pretend they don't think it's necessary.

We need a new word for shifty.

I think the subtext is that he thinks men with a GRC do have an automatic right to use female toilets and the headline writer has just imagined some meaning he didnt say.

RainWithSunnySpells · 02/07/2024 08:40

I can imagine that Stonewall and all the Labour gender faithful would be quite happy to have a coup and replace Keir with a true beiever once the elecetion is won.

ETA. That is unless Keir is that true beliver and he is just waiting to be in office before he throws down his cards.

Sunshineandchill · 02/07/2024 08:48

Wikipedia states how much good Starmer previously did for women when working as a lawyer. I’m confused 🫤

misscockerspaniel · 02/07/2024 08:53

If Starmer is genuine, Labour can start with schools by ensuring that all boys are educated that boys can wear whatever they like but that if born male, they will always be male and that mean that they must always use the male toilets etc.

Or maybe he plans to make all loos unisex. That will teach us, uppity women.

CocoapuffPuff · 02/07/2024 08:53

I think Starmer will be ousted very quickly after the election and replaced with a twaw hardliner. We are screwed. We will be rubbing the handmaidens noses in all the crap they're going to suddenly find to whine about within months. And yes, I will say "we fucking told you".
I would LOVE to be wrong about this. I truly would.
