Obviously hard to comment as no full details yet, but ...

Assuming an individual complained to the Police, who responded by talking about arresting her, they are going to be on dodgy grounds.

Assuming it is the leaflet of the PoW they are interferring with a candidate canvassing as part of a GE.

And a party that is officially registered.

So even if it was a usual suspect being vexatious, you would have thought that by now the police would hesitate and think instead of the usual knee jerck response to a TRA complaint.

Can a complaint be made to the Electoral Commission?

Doesn't Sheffield police have a history on this - although on reflection isn't it Leeds where the police are the lap dogs of the TRAs?

spannasaurus · 27/06/2024 20:02

If it's the same leaflet that was sent by mail it would have already been checked by royal mail to confirm it's not obscene or offensive

KJK in a call to the police, they're in a car so not very satisfactory. I don't think they realise what they've done.

According to the Malicious Communications Act it’s an offence to send letters etc with intent to cause distress or anxiety.

I suspect this might simply be a case of hurty feelz.

Did you ask JK Rowling for help? I heard she donates in cases like this.

EasternStandard · 27/06/2024 20:42

Wondering what the outcome will be

It's broken record time again I see.

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 27/06/2024 20:52

I'm quite looking forward to the drama TBH. I think they've made a big mistake here.

The police officer has potentially committed a criminal offence under 5he Representation of the People’s Act

borntobequiet · 27/06/2024 21:29

I hope this gets reported widely.

LadyMary50 · 27/06/2024 21:32

This is outrageous behaviour from Sheffield Police.I expect this sort of action in elections in Russia, not in our democratic country😡

Imnobody4 · 27/06/2024 21:39

Update from candidate.
Think he's going to find it was easier to get into than out of.

UPDATE: spoke to plod again who confirmed he got a fragile ego by putting phone down on me...I smells troon 💀

WhodoVoodoo · 27/06/2024 21:41

I'd rather she hadn't used the word troon. That undermines her and is unnecessary. Police are totally out of line though.

She did? oh well that explains it all. It's a hateful, transphobic slur.

"Can a complaint be made to the Electoral Commission?"

Yes I'd certainly be complaining about candidates who use homophobic or transphobic slurs.

MarieDeGournay · 27/06/2024 22:18

But there aren't any homophobic or transphobic slurs to complain about in the election leaflet, are there?

Don't know what any of that's about but I have seen her use a transphobic slur multiple times. That sounds to me like malicious communication with a hate aggravator.

Nat6999 · 27/06/2024 22:28

That's my ward the candidate is standing in, we haven't had any leaflets yet. I've just told ds as his friend is standing for the Green Party.

I don't know what the leaflets are about, but her use of transphobic slurs are stored safely in archives for the police and electoral commission to see.

An anti-trans Party using transphobic slurs? Not a good look is it?

Nat6999 · 27/06/2024 22:52

I've just spoken to ds & apparently Louise McDonld was vile at the hustings, everyone including the audience told her to shut up. She was homophobic every time she opened her mouth, she verbally insulted the Green candidate who is gay.

Did you give a police statement? Any recordings you took which could be used as evidence?

What's that got to do with the leaflet?

It was West Yorkshire where she was threatened with being arrested, there have been complaints to the Electoral Commission about her being openly homophobic.
