I know this is all deadly serious but his "99% of women don't have a penis" always makes me laugh. It's so ridiculous but oddly specific.

Yes, it is funny. It's a perfect example of what happens when you force yourself to say something you know is a lie. Starmer knows he's talking crap but he's now fully committed to it, unfortunately.

Meanwhile the NME reports on JK Rowling saying Tennant is part of the Gender Taliban. They have made an embarrassing fail, linking in the singer Billy Bragg but it’s a case of mistaken identity! They’ll probably correct it soon. And of course they call JK anti-trans. 🙄

https://www.nme.com/news/film/jk-rowling-says-david-tennant-is-part-of-gender-taliban-after-actor-calls-trans-critics-little-whinging-fuckers-3769990

The night before (June 25), Tennant was present at the British LGBT Awards to accept the LGBT+ Celebrity Ally award. During his speech, he addressed Badenoch, saying: “I don’t wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up.”

I was interested to see this ‘economical’ version of the quote - leaving out what David Tennant had said first:

'until we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore.'

Yes, a very good point. It’s quite sinister how these news organisations can be so misleading. Why would they not use that part of the quote? Could it be because they know damn well it makes Tennant look bad?

Talk of KS and his possible clothing preferences reminds me of one of my favourite CJ Cregg quotes on The West Wing:

”One in forty American men wear women’s clothing and we’ve had well over forty Presidents. I’m just saying, one of these guys was dancing around the Oval Office in a prom dress. Now let’s get to the bottom of that.”

Why actors and politics don’t mix
'David Tennant isn’t the first star to hit trouble when he speaks without a script and the instinct for applause takes over'

I'm fairly sure Izzard used to do a skit about an American president and the difference between them and himself as (using his words of the time) a different type of transvestite.

It was Hoover, at least in the urban legend

lcakethereforeIam · 29/06/2024 16:04

I think there was an American TV show (Sliders?) Our heroes slid to a parallel world and the police were all wearing skirts because of Hoover's proclivities.

It had the formerly chubby kid from Stand By Me in it.

Isn't weird the things you remember? I wonder if that episode is banned in reruns.

UtopiaPlanitia · 29/06/2024 17:37

I’d forgotten about that episode of Sliders - that takes me back to the days when scifi was much less woke than it is nowadays 😏😬

lcakethereforeIam · 29/06/2024 18:10

I stopped watching it. It got a bit repetitive, they'd lose the Slidey widget and have to get it back before they ran out of time. Did they ever get home?

I think it kept disappearing from the schedule too.

UtopiaPlanitia · 29/06/2024 18:51

I missed so much scifi and comedy because BBC 2 used to just randomly move things round in the schedule and my family didn’t have a video recorder - kids today don’t know how lucky they are with their Netflixes and IPlayers 😂

I didn’t see the end of Sliders either, probably because of BBC scheduling, but I do remember Jerry O’Connell’s brother was hired to take over from him when he left.

Also, in a slight relevance to this thread, I stopped watching nuDoctor Who because I found David Tennant much too irritatingly hyper. I was used to more sedate and erudite Doctors like Pertwee, Baker and Davidson 🧐

lcakethereforeIam · 29/06/2024 18:58

I think I took against his Doctor for two rather petty reasons

  1. Billie Piper had that 'Because we want to' (should be a tra anthem). I've known people with nuisance neighbours, lack of consideration and peak fuckwittery. I couldn't get past that.
  1. Everyone, and I mean everyone fancying the skinny weasel. I just couldn't believe it. Travelling in time, not a problem. Bigger on the inside, I'm fine with that. Two hearts, don't care. David Tennant fanciable! Hard nope!

I used to like that misogynist, till he opened his mouth.

I liked him a lot better when I had only heard him speak words written by a scriptwriter.

Dawn can be comedy gold. Reciting the lyrics to ‘Something inside so Strong’. Time after time was remarkably cringe (Google it if you have never seen it)

I don't know if I want to see it.

I might need more gin.

LunaNorth · 29/06/2024 20:09

I have Keir(a) down as a Viyella kinda guy.

Abhannmor · 29/06/2024 20:20

Yes but J Edgar Hoover of the FBI , not President Herbert Hoover. ( I think)

Ive never actually seen it but it's an amusing memory from a Guardian article documenting the run up to the 2019 election. She also did the same for the "We're Still Here" trans conference in 2018, as reported by a brave undercover Mumsnetter, but it was the Greatest Showman that time.

NeilsExorcistMoonshine · 29/06/2024 20:26

I think I'd like to see both Sunak and Starmer do a daily mail who wore it better full page miniskirt competition to decide the election.
I know who I'd vote for.

Thing was even if you had a video that didn't always save you. I've lost count of the number of shows I missed the end of because the snooker/wimbledon overran and everything had got pushed back so the recording cut off partway through.

Yeah he's annoying, has very little acting range. Tennant has spent his whole career basically just replaying his character from Takin' Over The Asylum in every other role.
