What is 'in the spirit of postbox toppers'? to me it's knitted and on top of a postbox. Surely that's in the spirit? and why does everything have to be judged as if it's in the spirit of whatever the activity is?

Don't tell me, don't tell me, I've got it. It's transphobic.

AlisonDonut · 03/06/2024 12:56

The Mayor is a friend of mine. I just can't...

FOJN · 03/06/2024 12:57

Intimidated by ribbons and yarn crafts, how do these people get through life?

Runor · 03/06/2024 12:57

FFS transwomen are not women, they are transwomen. The only adults who can become transwomen are, by definition, men. Nothing wrong with being a transwoman, so why is this so threatening?!

PorcelinaV · 03/06/2024 12:59

Yeah personally I don't think that's the appropriate place for political messaging; and while a common sense statement about biological sex shouldn't be "political" that is what it's become.

I understand the desire to fight back with the messaging when you see institutions captured and pushing biased propaganda.

GargoyleOfBeelzebub · 03/06/2024 12:59

You can't be untoward towards postbox toppers.

DrSpartacular · 03/06/2024 13:00

It's crochet.

The creator should complain about this egregious mis-crafting.

Why is it not the place for political messaging though?

I mean political parties literally put up huge billboard type posters when they are campaigning, so as a country we are used to, and I presume tolerate as I've never seen campaigning against it, political messages out on the streets

So why is political billboards out in public fine, but a political piece of knitting/crochet (a piece deemed political at least) out in public not fine?

HateMyNewJobSoMuch · 03/06/2024 13:03

Women ought to be seen and not heard. How dare we knit basic biological facts when we should be busy cooking our husband’s dinners or cleaning.

Good grief.

I highly suspect “the spirit of” means “traditional non offensive womanly themes” like spring flowers . God forbid any woman to have an opinion let alone on something controversial!

My first thought too 😂😂😂

”And in the holy month of Pride,” was frigging inevitable, wasn’t it. Untouchable sacred castes.

It’s June, one of the drier months in the U.K. calendar, so the least likely for the crochet art to be trashed by weather.

Exactly! What a ridiculous statement.
Pass me the Labour-endorsed "Rules for Acceptable Postbox Toppers" immediately!

The responses on the Facebook post about this yesterday were 99% TERFy.

Topperfan · 03/06/2024 13:08

(I'm a fairly regular poster on this board but have name changed for privacy.)

To whoever you are in my little town who created this topper, I salute you!

Women have used textiles as a means of spreading political messages for a very long time.

Seditious handicrafts are excellent.

Take undervalued skills, crafts able to be done in the home or at a gathering of friends for tea, and while our patriarchal society pats us on our heads for seeming to be quiet little women, we make banners, posters and rope ladders to get the hell out.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 03/06/2024 13:12

Labour councillor Helen Faccio, who is the council's portfolio holder for community safety, acknowledged not everyone would have the same views on the subject but described the timing and content of the topper as an "unacceptable act of intimidation"

Intimidation. What the actual fuck. Someone is 'intimidated' by a piece of crochet.

And she follows it up with this superb piece of irony. "We do not want Broxtowe to be an intolerant place. You don't have to agree or understand other people's lifestyles and life choices - however there is no need to try and intimidate them or go out of your way to negate their experience."

I've always thought local politics is very largely job creation for the otherwise unemployable. Thanks to Helen Faccio I'm even more convinced now.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 03/06/2024 13:13

When that was their only safe means of doing so. Probably starting with the Bayeux Tapestry.

There are no end of pride rainbow toppers all over the place already.

One AHF topper is hardly anything to complain about.

And the Victorian duplicate no-nudity version of the Bayeux tapestry that's in Reading Museum.

I saw that a few weeks ago. There are (or were) a couple of programmes about the Tapestry on IPlayer, which counted up the number of naked men, among other things. Bet that made the women who sewed it a bit of a giggle while working.

Well done that adult human female 👏

Modern version of embroidered votes for women banner

I wonder if a similar twaw topper would be removed (obviously not) and how long it'll be before one appears to mass applause
