Has anyone noticed a dialling down in PRIDE logos on business websites today?

We're in Wales labour sigh

Sensibly Welsh plaid cymru and the conservatives have ignored it.

As what is now known as an ‘ally’ I attended the first few Brighton Prides in the ‘90s (there were some events in the 70s but it faded - probably around the time of aids and section 28).

Those first few events felt genuinely subversive and dangerous. The police were certainly not with us then, and there were as many people jeering and threatening as there were demonstrating. I’m proud (ha) that I was there for my LGB and yes T friends at a time of need.

I stopped going 6 or 7 years later. It had transformed into a huge party that lasted all weekend, with corporate sponsors, police participation and B level pop stars. I felt that I was no longer needed and that it should be a day for LGB people.
Im glad I stopped. When I see what it’s become these days I think it should be renamed as ‘embarrassment’.

My old Mum says BLT no matter how many times I tell her that’s a sarnie.

I'd add older people. Ageism is rife in our society.

YES! A local Labour Party general election candidate did a social media video making a big deal about inclusivity without including a single person in the film over about 65-70 tops. Having spent the past few years struggling with care for an elderly relative (in their 80-90s) the lack of consideration given to the elderly in this society drives me nuts. See also: Mental Heath awareness week that fails to mention dementia, one of the most prevalent mental health issues.

Sarnie short of a picnic perhaps she meant

Well these do exist (and "whataboutary isn't helpful ). I genuinely cannot see for the life of me how anyone can be 'anti ' any of these things. Surely awareness, tolerance and understanding is what a civilised society should be about?

No one is anti any of these things, that's the point. No one should be forced to 'celebrate' the intimate details of other people lives.
Its weird, coercive and will create a horrible backlash against tolerance.

Maddy70 · 01/06/2024 15:17

No-one is forced !

Who exactly is being "forced" to celebrate?

motheronthedancefloor · 01/06/2024 15:24

I'm sure all the flags will appear on Monday when marketing teams return to work. I look forward to our 'womens' group promoting trans rights again.

Which month is disability awareness month?
Which month is anti-racism month?

And I have genuinely never seen or been offered a workplace lanyard for anyone’s rights other than a rainbow lanyard.

LGBT people have the same rights and protections in law as everyone else. I wish a safe and peaceful life to all, irrespective of their sexual orientation. I don’t care who you sleep with. I don’t doubt that homophobia exists, but there are ‘phobias’ towards many groups in society. Just ask a group of disabled people about some of the terrible things that get said and done to them. Why are LGBT people uniquely oppressed?

Pride month is over-reach and runs the risk of antagonising those who would otherwise be supportive.

Christinapple · 01/06/2024 15:47

I knew there would be a thread on here complaining about pride month.

So has anyone here complained to managers about putting up a pride flag or showing other support for LGBT people yet?

Maddy70 · 01/06/2024 15:54

Well you could of course google... autism month . Disability awareness month etc etc. But that doesn't fit your narrative

Theeyeballsinthesky · 01/06/2024 15:56

I’m sure you can point to all the marches celebrating disability awareness month funded by local councils or all the companies lighting up their buildings in celebration

Nobody needs Google to know when Pride month is.

Maddy70 · 01/06/2024 15:17

No-one is forced !

Even if you ignore schools and children, there are multiple incidences of people being discriminated against for not honoring pride month sufficiently every year.
There was that guy from Halifax building society who tweeted that anyone not behind pride should not be given a bank account, financial disenfranchisement is very serious, and that's just off the top of my head.
To pretend LGBT month is not promoted vastly more than other inclusion dates is just not reality.

domineastronomy · 01/06/2024 16:22

Really low key in my town

ResisterRex · 01/06/2024 16:24

It's overexposed. It's gone from an adults' event for a weekend, to wall to wall everywhere. There's Pride bunting in Flying Tiger FFS.

domineastronomy · 01/06/2024 16:28

Everything has changed since the T piggy- backed on to Pride celebrations.

And? You don't have to buy it. There's lots of stuff in the shops I don't want and, consequently, ignore and don't buy.

I agree. I just won’t visit any store that promotes it.

NormaSnorks · 01/06/2024 16:47

It's gone from promoting tolerance to generating irritation and has now become highly counterproductive.

I f*cking don't care about your sexuality - just live your life however you want, so long as it doesn't harm others.
The route to acceptance isn't to run around in dayglo rainbows proclaiming, "look at me, look at me, look how speeeecschial I am...."

Interestingly my local council sent out a newsletter in which the first item was all about June being Pride month, and the second about how June is also 'Communities Month' (which is general local communities, not LGBT+). Surely if we put all the effort into wider 'Communities Month' this would be a much more constructive thing?

ResisterRex · 01/06/2024 16:50

I was saying it's overexposed. Literally used the word.

When anything becomes overexposed, people tire of it and switch off.

In case anyone is concerned, I didn't buy the bunting but I did shop in the shop. No one seemed to be even interested in the Pride display. To circle back - it's overexposed.

Sarah2891 · 01/06/2024 16:58

I don't get why it needs to be a whole month. It's a bit overkill. A week would be better.

OutOfTheHouse · 01/06/2024 16:58

I think it is just an easy reach for a lot of large companies. Draw a rainbow on the logo and then carry on. It’s the cynicism I have a problem with.
My friend has a small independent business. He always has a sign in his window during pride that says something like ‘don’t shop with the big companies because they’ve put a rainbow on their shop, buy stuff from me, an actual gay.’

As for ‘when is straight pride’, that’s just like ‘when is international men’s day?’
