Eddie Izzard Interview in the Times

Igneococcus · 25/05/2024 07:18

Written by the sports writer who wrote several comments in the Times over the years supporting transwomen in female sports, so no surprise there is no challenge (that I can see) to Izzard's bletherings:

Eddie Izzard: ‘Trans people going back in a shell? Won’t happen’

Eddie Izzard (also answers to Suzy) has migrated from stand-up comedy to serious acting, with solo performances of Great Expectations and Hamlet. But the role the 62-year-old really wants is to be the first trans member of parliament. Interview by Mart...

Fuck! Is it not ladylike to point out that a bloke in a dress has no place in a women's loo? Does this mean that I am a man now?

I'm devastated that I may not be a proper lady like what Eddie is.

SofaThrow · 25/05/2024 14:13

borntobequiet · 25/05/2024 14:10

The choice of the name Suzy always perplexed me, why not Edie?

It’s very much a phone box “tart card” name (unfortunately, because it’s a pretty name) and Izzard is of a generation who would find that exciting.

I think it's worse than that, sorry. He used to date a 'Susie' who died. These men are truly fucked up.

CorylusAgain · 25/05/2024 14:13

I’m saying YOU think any “biologically born” man identifying as female must all potentially be predators. Specifically in this case you are discussing on here, Eddie Izzard. Otherwise what’s the problem?

That's how safeguarding works @FrogTheWarrior !

Safeguarding policies apply across the board. For the record I don't believe EI is sexually predatory. But I can't know that for a fact. EI himself can't prove that he's not. Therefore to safeguard women and children *all men, including those that identify as trans, shoukd not be in women's spaces such as toilets.

OvaHere · 25/05/2024 14:04

Is nail polish what qualifies Eddie to be in female spaces?

Once apon a time it was a gold lamé purse that was the keys to the kingdom, how times change!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 25/05/2024 14:02

You see I have been to see EI loads of times over 20 years and he was hilarious. I have never laughed as much at anything as I did at Definite Article

haven’t seen him for about 12 years now though

Edited

Is that the 'are you happy with your wash?' one? I laughed so hard at the whole thing. He used to be brilliant and I went to see him loads, back in the day. Now, not so much.

Can anyone confirm my point from earlier or am I going mad. Was it me or did the piece initially use female pronouns for Izzard then change this to male?

There are a few people in the comments asking why Izzard is referred to as 'she' throughout - that's not the case when you read it now.

I read it late this morning and there were smatterings of she, him, they throughout

borntobequiet · 25/05/2024 14:19

I should have said “of a generation and disposition”, above.

Oh yes, I think I remember about the former girlfriend.

Ahhhh I loved that one too but no definite article is the one with school band, Mrs badcrumble, supermarket, shopping at late night petrol stations and Pavlov’s cats

Ah yes. Unrepeatable is the wash one.

I saw The Definite Article in London. Twice! Plus I have most of his DVDs as well as his first show on video. No VCR though! I can't bring myself to watch them now as I'm so disappointed about his change of attitude / description.

I think people being bitchy about photoshop have zero credibility.

Well if he want's essence of woman - that's one of them.
Prepare to have your looks, dress sense and mannerisms publicly debated.

PotholesAnonymous · 25/05/2024 14:28

FrogTheWarrior · 25/05/2024 14:00

And with this, I rest my case!

Enjoy your intellectual debate, “ladies”.

We don't want or need an intellectual debate.

We just want men to stop saying they ARE women.

They are not.

End of

Spot on. Its standard practise for any women to be judged and torn apart mainly on their looks and what they're wearing.
Surely EI should embrace this essence of being a woman.

popebishop · 25/05/2024 15:08

If we've got non-engagers on this thread telling us we're wrong, I would love an explanation as to why masculine clothes are "not essence of woman".

The simplest explanation is that Eddie is using "woman" to mean "feminine" and/or vice versa.

popebishop · 25/05/2024 15:12

Yes, I've seen data proving that criticising photo editing software renders someone unable to make a truthful claim.

Oh no wait, I haven't, because that's a batshit conclusion to reach.

That's quite telling really. Men think womanhood is an intellectual debate that can be 'won' rather than just the reality of our lives.

Nurber · 25/05/2024 10:48

Seriously?? The trans lobby would be ok with that?

Why would trans people have an issue with you as a female wanting to present as a male

Maddy70 · 25/05/2024 15:34

No, she said present as trans, that's not the same thing.

If I recall correctly, the concept of 'circumgender' very much upset some TRAs.

Pharos · 25/05/2024 16:05

Datun · 25/05/2024 13:35

Good news about the comments.

It used to be that readers could be swayed, depending on the bent of the article.

Now I don't think they can.

From what I've seen over the last couple of years, the vast majority of readers who comment are highly sceptical of gender identity and very supportive of women's and girls' single sex rights.

moulinrogue · 25/05/2024 17:02

I used to really like EI, saw him do stand up a few times but now.....sigh! He makes me cringe. He can be whatever he wants but don't expect the rest of us to accept you as female. You're not. It doesn't help that you do not look feminine even with your hair styled, heavy make up and clothes...if that's bitchy so be it. I mean, if I met him and he wanted me to call him Suzy I'd oblige but if he wanted to join me in the queue for the ladies' toilet I'd be seething.

HootyMcBooby · 25/05/2024 17:27

Why is "biologically born" in inverted commas?

What OTHER kind of man is there?

LarkLane · 25/05/2024 17:28

SofaThrow · 25/05/2024 14:14

Edited

That's seriously messed up behaviour - a man calling himself after his dead ex when he dresses up as a woman? Alfred Hitchcock territory.

What on earth must the real Suzy's sons think of Izzard prancing around in a frock and heavy makeup using their deceased mother's name?

That's not an homage to a talented former girlfriend. That's a very weird carry on indeed.

SofaThrow · 25/05/2024 17:43

It is indeed and it would be the one name (perhaps your Mum's also) that you would avoid if you were going to larp around as a pretend woman. 🙄

BezMills · 25/05/2024 17:43

It's not unusual for this type of person to model their feminine persona on their sister, mother or partner.

SofaThrow · 25/05/2024 17:47

The kind of person whose three letters we are not allowed to type?
