Eddie Izzard Interview in the Times

Written by the sports writer who wrote several comments in the Times over the years supporting transwomen in female sports, so no surprise there is no challenge (that I can see) to Izzard's bletherings:

Eddie Izzard: ‘Trans people going back in a shell? Won’t happen’

Eddie Izzard (also answers to Suzy) has migrated from stand-up comedy to serious acting, with solo performances of Great Expectations and Hamlet. But the role the 62-year-old really wants is to be the first trans member of parliament. Interview by Mart...

I almost cringed up my own fundament

love it

fromorbit · 29/05/2024 13:23

Izzard should have done King Lear. Deluded old man persecutes a truth telling women while favouring vicious women and goes increasingly mad. A wise fool points out Lear's absurdity and flight from reality.

ArabellaScott · 29/05/2024 13:30

Both reviews have been at pains to say they are generally fans of Izzard's work.

WeirdButFuckingBeautiful · 29/05/2024 13:31

Compare and contrast with an actor such as Andrew Scott pulling off Vanya exquisitely, including the female characters, without having the girly feels of EI.

Zeugma · 29/05/2024 13:50

I almost cringed up my own fundament

That’s the quote for outside the theatre right there!

lcakethereforeIam · 29/05/2024 13:58

NB or not NB, that is the question 🤔

He got a few relatively positive reviews when it was in the States. I can't imagine it's changed much. So, makes you wonder about the quality of theatre critics over the pond. Possibly intimidated by Shakespeare? Or didn't want to be seen being mean to a transperson?

So to be clear - you think Eddie Izzard is a sexual predator of women and children? Because that’s what you’re really saying. Ooof, brave words then surely?

For me to be clear - I absolutely do not think that. Nor would I have the slightest issue sharing loos, changing rooms, wherever with Eddie Izzard. I would welcome the chance to have an intelligent conversation while hand washing! In German, if he preferred. And maybe exchange notes about nail colours while we’re at it.

Clear enough?

How about you responding to my comment re the immature bitchiness trivialising any intellectual debate?

Wow. Such a cool girl!

Do continue to expound your deeply feminist arguments.

These days I'd have issues sharing an entire theatre with Mr Izzard.

I went to several of his gigs in the nineties and thoroughly enjoyed them, but these days? Not a chance in hell.

Lightfrost · 29/05/2024 19:40

This Guardian line rather sums Eddie up:

It comes to feel like a shallow impersonation

Do you like his frock?

Said no woman ever.

Review in the Times 😬

Tbf comedy breasts are probably authentic Shakespeare.

I see from this pic that his metamorphosis in to Pat Butcher is almost complete.

ArabellaScott · 29/05/2024 22:13

I may have missed it - was Time Out posted?

'this sequel is more of an exercise in vanity than artistic purpose. ...
'...even as a loud and proud Izzard fan, it is a struggle to pick out the positives from this mess.'

Eddie Izzard: Hamlet, Riverside Studios review: The comedy legend tackles Shakespeare’s greatest work, badly

A baffling folly from comedy legend Izzard, who plays all 23 roles in Shakespeare’s masterpiece, badly

MouseMinge · 30/05/2024 00:36

There's criticism of the scenery, or lack thereof in most of the the reviews which makes me more surprised that the costume isn't equally criticised. On the one hand he isn't weari? Anyway!):

She could be running the Queen Vic.

And as a poster rightly pointed out just up thread, the transformation to Pat Butcher, etc. Judgement around the costume - and makeup - was lacking although I've seen a photo of him doing it in NYC where he was wearing a similar jacket and fishnets so the shiny trousers are definitely an improvement.

Maybe he thought that he was good enough to join Andrew Scott (Uncle Vanya) and Sarah Snook (Dorian Gray), both of whom absolutely wowed audiences and reviewers alike. I was really sad that I couldn't get to see Sarah Snook's performance because it sounded absolutely amazing with great scenery and effects to boot. Alas, he was wrong. He isn't very good at being a politician but I'd argue he's better at that - and he's bad at it - than he is at the old acting thing. It's sad that his ego is so huge that he can't or refuses to see his lack of ability at everything that isn't running marathons or comedy. Like the reviewers, I was a HUGE fan in the 90s. I thought he was a comedy genius. I literally came close to wetting myself at one of his gigs. His trans entitlement and his ego telling him that anyone who doesn't bow at his feet is a transphobe have ruined him and made people laugh at him for all the wrong reasons. I almost feel sorry for him.

SinnerBoy · 30/05/2024 03:21

like watching naked Muppets...

😂

ArabellaScott · 30/05/2024 07:46

'His trans entitlement and his ego telling him that anyone who doesn't bow at his feet is a transphobe have ruined him and made people laugh at him for all the wrong reasons. I almost feel sorry for him.'

I can find some empathy for him. I also expect he has a personality disorder which has continued to escalate the more praise he gets. I don't think he's a happy man, and probably not an easy man to be around.

And this is again where genderism fails and causes more suffering- on some level I'd say he's crying for help, boundaries, and someone to tell him 'no'. I'm not talking about solely cross dressing, but it's one part of grandiose, narcissistic behaviour and if it were seen as such someone might by now have suggested he seek treatment, instead of running as an MP, running 50 marathons, or trying desperately and endlessly to run away from himself.

SofaThrow · 30/05/2024 13:10

Off topic but Sarah Snook is an AMAZING actress.

On topic, Izzard is a bloody awful actor.

AprilPoisson · 30/05/2024 21:43

He isn't an awful actor - I've seen him act well - however, this does appear to be a vanity project, presumably as Great Expectations was well received.
I like the frock in the OP, I don't think the usual attire (mutton dressed as lamb Pat Butcher) does him any favours at all.
I often comment on nails, tattoos or colours worn but I'm a socially awkward, nailbiter who hasn't chosen a tattoo yet for my impending mid-life crisis. Most people I talk to are lovely incidentally. It's not swapping tips, it's just making conversation.

SidewaysOtter · 30/05/2024 22:16

I almost feel sorry for him

I actually do feel sorry for him. It’s clear that he’s never been able to cope with his mother’s death and his issues around dressing as/“being” a woman absolutely scream that.

He was an absolute comedy genius and he spaffed that up the wall for more attention. I was a huge fan of his and I can still recite Definite Article, Dress to Kill and Glorious virtually word for word (“I want to discover shoes that no one has ever discovered before, right at the back of the shop on the left”). It’s really very sad.

Whatshallabee · 31/05/2024 13:51

His film “Six Minutes to Midnight” was also a vanity project. It was actually a very good premise for a film, the script was reasonably good and it was nicely shot, but Eddie hopelessly miscast himself as the Richard Hannah character (39 Steps) and his performance was diabolical. Contrast that to his evilness in “The Day of the Triffids” and there clearly is talent in need of direction.

Whatshallabee · 31/05/2024 13:52

Damn, Hannay not Hannah stupid autocorrect.

Bassetlover · 31/05/2024 19:06

I used to love him back in the 90/00's saw him live loads of times but I most recently was persuaded to go and see him in a small charity gig during the pandemic. He looked like a very masculine fembot, came across as incredibly arrogant and was really unfunny.

That’s a shame. I used to see him regularly when he was the compère at Screaming Blue Murder in Hampton Wick and he was hilarious.
