Written by the sports writer who wrote several comments in the Times over the years supporting transwomen in female sports, so no surprise there is no challenge (that I can see) to Izzard's bletherings:

Eddie Izzard: ‘Trans people going back in a shell? Won’t happen’

Eddie Izzard (also answers to Suzy) has migrated from stand-up comedy to serious acting, with solo performances of Great Expectations and Hamlet. But the role the 62-year-old really wants is to be the first trans member of parliament. Interview by Mart...

I loved him in the 90s which was when I last saw him live. A friend - who lives in Madrid - used to watch DVDs of his shows during our Siesta period. I can't remember which show it was but there was one where it was clear that he was in a bit of a coke period. Lots of sniffing, speaking a little bit too quickly. We were deeply unimpressed because although it was still just about funny it wasn't him anywhere close to his best. He clearly got past this period or maybe we just completely imagined it. I'd hate to accuse anyone of taking drugs when they haven't etc. The stuff we were watching was definitely in the noughties. We sort of fell out of love with him from there.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/06/2024 07:00

He did appear to get gradually less funny as time went on. I think his peak was around Unrepeatable / Definite Article. Maybe add Glorious in there too. I laughed so so much at those shows (and saw him live a good number of times too; I loved him!).

I see from this pic that his metamorphosis in to Pat Butcher is almost complete.

Lacking only the ear-rings and the string of failed marriages.

Is Hampton Wick an actual place? I thought it was rhyming slang...

I agree. I went to see him in the 00s and I was hugely excited on the back of his previous tours (which I'd only seen on video) but very disappointed.

It's around the Richmond area of London. I think it used to be a village back in ye olden days.
It does sound like rhyming slang though.

I see there's a pp from Hampton Wick already posted in response to you Sinner.
QED.

CorylusAgain · 01/06/2024 09:38

Hampton Wick is rhyming slang.
Rhyming slang works by substituting a real phrase, name or words for something else.
So Hampton Wick means dick. Like Barnet Fair means hair. The phrase often gets shortened to one word so the rhyme isn't obvious.
Barnet = hair
Hampton = dick

LarkLane · 01/06/2024 09:57

I've always had a fondness for the use of "syrup".

lcakethereforeIam · 01/06/2024 10:04

'Half inched', I'm quite fond of and 'porkies'. As in 'that berk telling porkies, half inched first place'.

'Berk' is another good one, although I didn't know it was rhyming slang for ages.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/06/2024 12:16

Asking on here is definitely a Google substitute! Grin

Everything about this man is ugly.

He's a narcissistic, fraudulent, self absorbed creep.

‘Girl mode’

Would it be ok for me to dress as a man dressed as a woman and lower my voice and say I’m in trans mode? No, because it’s offensive and appropriating. Fuck off Eddie Izzard.

Does anyone remember Man Friday on here who identified as a man on Fridays to challenge some ridiculous swimming pool rules?
I think they had men only sessions, and women and transwomen sessions but no actual female sessions, so she opted to identify as male on a Friday to be able to swim that day.
It caused a right rumpus among the men, until she pointed out that women were supposed to accept male bodied people in their sessions without complaining.

Tbf he's raised a lot of money for charity by running marathons. It's not Eddie's fault someone else successfully laundered their character doing that.

I wish I had the courage t go into the blokes' changing room like that.

I remember her! it was fantastic PR. I loved the Rebellious woman of Man Friday. I'm sorry they stopped.

Which is hilarious to me, as my mother doesn't even use mild swear words, but would call someone a berk! 😬🤣
