Emma Corrin and 'homophobia'

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 22/05/2024 17:11

Emma Corrin claims to have experienced homophobia since 'coming out' as non-binary.

Emma Corrin is in a relationship with Rami Malek.

Make it make sense.

Out of interest can I ask you what phobia you think gay men are on the receiving end of when they are 'queer bashed' ?

Here's a funny story for you.
I was talking with a friend (one of my most dearly loved friends) who is a gay man, about homosexuality and homophobia.

He said (something like), "Actually, I think at heart it's really just mysogyny. That's where it stems from." Because of what had immediately preceeded his comment I thought he was talking about homosexuality. And I was absolutely squirming in my chair, thinking, /weird/ take, and WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU TELL ME THAT??!! My heart was breaking: here is someone I have come to love and now here he is telling me actually he's only gay because he hates women too much to desire them?!
Thankfully I didn't hit the roof, and pretty quickly the penny dropped that the "it" he was referring to was homophobia, not homosexuality. Phew, friendship breakup averted!!
Maybe he's right, and homophobia directed towards gay men is an extension of mysogyny - they are too much like women and therefore deserve only disparagement, loathing, violence.

Different gay men will give different explanations for being gay bashed. Most will say, "homophobia." Some, like my friend, will say, "mysogyny." Myself, I think mysogyny is necessary but not sufficient for homophobia to exist and be acted on with violence.

I definitely agree that homophobia would not exist without misogyny. Misogyny is the root of homophobia, whether it's directed at gay men or lesbians.

However, I think it would be an over-simplification to say that gay men who are victims of homophobia have experienced misogyny, as homophobia is one very specific type/iteration of misogyny.

Those are my thoughts, for what they're worth!

I mean in her photos she presents in a way most people would associate with men and butch lesbians. Very short hair. Suits. Mens clothes.
Unfortunately in this world women who do that still get a lot of sexist and homophobic grief. For some reason you and other posters seem to think that's fine because she's NB so she deserves it.

Is this true?
If so it speaks to the complete and total erasure of butch women in our culture.

Editing to add: My original post is a bit snipy but in the time since posting it (thankfully within the editing window) it's occurred to me that this might be the source of your consternation, @AdamRyan.
You look at Corrin and see a butch lesbian (and therefore someone who would be a target for homophobes).
To me she looks more like a pretty twelve year old girl. It would never in a million years have occurred to me that someone (including someone homophobic) could look at her and think "butch lesbian."

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 26/05/2024 08:56

God, it just smacks of attention seeking/ box ticking/ wannabe speshal nonsense.

“Thanks for capturing this with me, very intimate, very new, very cool,”

These are not candid 'capturing a moment' shots. They are posed to carefully appeal to every demographic. And what's intimate about posting photos online?

She's just trying to tick every box possible. Bit of cleavage, bit of binding, bit of wistful thinking (cos I'm deep, me) bit of writhing. Get over yourself.

'Butch' my arse! Corrin looks highly styled and manicured like a model - in fact plenty of models have had extreme short haircut over the decades. She's clearly obsessed with her looks and with getting attention, hence leaving the house in underpants etc. Her whole NB thing, same as with Sam Smith, is attention-seeking narc bs.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 26/05/2024 10:33

I’d describe Emma Corrin’s aesthetic as ‘Art Studenty, but via Exclusive Atelier (rather than Chazza Shop)’

Puts me in mind of Pulp’s Common People song.

I agree, she looks as ‘butch’ as Marlene Dietrich did, who appropriated male fashion/style… and in doing so accentuated her femininity and sexuality.

Just in children’s play, they explore what they are not (ie boy’s playing at being mummy, princesses) to affirm what they are (ie daddies/males); adorning oneself in male apparel simply underscores that a woman is female. The fashion world knows this.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 26/05/2024 11:03

Pretty much, @BackToLurk!

Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your dad he could stop it all”

(I actually quite like the luxury art student look, or at least I would like a version with bigger pants/proper bottoms, I just bristle at the idea that a beserk sense of fashion makes a person a marginalised minority. I’ve dressed like a lunatic for over 30 years and I’m well aware that I could’ve chosen to blend in/conform more for an easier life. Getting public flack for one’s dramatic dress sense isn’t the same as homophobic abuse, being a public weirdo quite rightly isn’t a protected characteristic)

This is clear evidence that EC is non-binary. No woman would team those shoes with that bag; no man would wear that cardie and most men and women manage to put their trousers on before they leave the house.

Good grief.

BusyMummy001 · 26/05/2024 13:56

@CryptoFascistMadameCholet why do none of these models know how to walk in heels? They all look like little girls shuffling in mummy’s oversized shoes!

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 26/05/2024 15:12

TBF kitten heeled sling backs are the devils work! The models that got the brogues must’ve been well chuffed.

Give me a nice, chunky 1940s style platform with an ankle or Mary Jane strap and I can run for a bus, no problem.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 26/05/2024 15:23

Not loving taking the piss out of people's fashion choices :( I want a world where everyone feels free to wear what they want as long as it's decent, and whether it's fabulous, functional or just very very silly should be their choice and unrelated to the sex of their own body or anyone else's.

I hear you, but I think most of these later comments are referencing the ludicrous items in fashion shows. The designers present these as an art form - and just as viewer can ridicule a piece of art in a gallery, they can mock these creations. Shoes that models can barely walk in; fabrics that serve no practical real world purpose; sparkly faux jewel encrusted knickers that you would be able to walk no further than the length of a catwalk without chafing your inner thighs (let alone sit on an office chair or bar stool in).

It’s intentionally being displayed for response - and in several cases modelled by highly paid celebrities to garner PR - so it’s all fair game as far as I’m concerned.

Is it a choice when you are being paid to wear it?

MarieDeGournay · 26/05/2024 16:18

Some of the more er... vehement critique of that outfit follows a poster upthread writing
'I mean in her photos she presents in a way most people would associate with men and butch lesbians' [ it says 'her photos' in general, in fairness]
and if there's one thing you can say about the outfit in question, it's that it doesn't scream 'butch lesbian'😏

No, which is another reason not to take the piss.

For those who are not paid it should be a choice but IMO cannot be as long as our clothes are constrained by gendered and other social roles.

ArabellaScott · 26/05/2024 16:27

I like the weird fashion, shoot me! It is indeed an art form, it's not supposed to be worn to Tescos.
