Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

The amazing coincidence of there being so many men who identify as women [as the Times expresses.it] in the recent BBC stories on the cost of living crisis might, amazingly, not be that much of a coincidence.

Incidentally, their head of facilitation is one Kirrin Medcalf, who you may remember from Alison Bailey's tribunal (if you weren't too distracted by the support menagerie).

@JournalismSEEN: The number of trans-identified men used as contributors on apparently random BBC stories has generated interest. The BBC has its own contacts database but one resource it uses for stories/contributo...…

You mean someone ACTUALLY GAVE KIRRIN ANOTHER JOB? Bloody hell. I assume they hadn't seen any of the tribunal coverage.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 23/07/2024 14:08

Astounding, isn't it? Or perhaps they gave the excellent dog a job and Medcalf just tagged along.

Snowypeaks · 23/07/2024 14:22

A propos of no threads in particular, I just wanted to share some news I got from the lastest edition of The Mess We're In podcast.

Kara Dansky, women's rights activist in the USA, told us about the result of an appeal in Tennessee about the lawfulness of keeping males out of women's sport. In coming to their judgment (that it is lawful), the appellate court ruled that - based on the definitions provided by WPATH, Stonewall, ACLU et al, 1) "transgender" does not have a coherent meaning 2) "transgender people" are not a stable and meaningful category of person and 3) transgender people" are not a powerless group.

This is marvellous. I wish it had happened here.

Noticed this thumbnail 😁

Not interested in watching it. It could be a coincidence 🤔

I've been hiding under a bridge a lot lately so apologies if this has cropped up before.

Whilst browsing the decisions on the PHSO website (as you do) I discovered an interesting recent case

https://decisions.ombudsman.org.uk/decision?id=d4f9fcd0-c23d-ef11-a316-7c1e520446e1&type=Health%20decisions

Their reasons for closing the case are interesting as they used the Cass review

  1. Our adviser explained prescribing testosterone on the NHS to individuals under the age of 18 has been argued for and against. There is national debate over prescribing hormones for young people and there are different clinical opinions on whether it is beneficial or not.

  2. This resulted in the Cass Review in 2020, that was commissioned to make sure children and young people receive the best possible care and treatment to meet their individual needs. The review specifically addressed the use of hormone treatment and said it was not able to give advice on this, due to gaps in the evidence it had about this. It went on to explain that in some clinical cases, it is reasonable practice to not prescribe hormone treatment like testosterone. But, it added that judgements should be clinically based and based on individual need.

  3. The records show that in May 2022 Mr R was sadly not eating and his mental state was at risk of change. Mr R’s case was discussed by his consultant psychiatrist during a multi-disciplinary team meeting (when clinicians from different areas meet to discuss care), with input from the consultant paediatrician. They decided Mr R should not be prescribed testosterone.

  4. Our adviser says the Trust’s clinical judgement to not prescribe testosterone was in line with the above Cass Review because it used clinical judgement to consider Mr R’s mental and physical state at the time.

lcakethereforeIam · 24/07/2024 08:48

I'm going to assume Mr R is female.

The latest one from Invisible Women really sums up how invisible we are.

It's so stupid. Putting aside the human cost, there's a saying I'm fond of 'penny wise, pound foolish'. To me, that's what this is.

But the human cost; those women, their lives, their families 😟

Medee · 24/07/2024 10:53

I came here to post that too, heartbreaking loss of a woman’s quality of life, and detrimental to her creative and economic output so society loses overall.

duc748 · 24/07/2024 11:43

Heart-breaking it is. Can Labour at least make some headway on this?

This might be good to post as a separate thread @Boiledbeetle - agree it's significant that it refers to Cass.

Someone else can have the honour, I'm not really a thread starter, I find it too stressful! 😁

When you say "hiding under a bridge", @Boiledbeetle, is that in a Billy Goats Gruff sort of way?

I was rounding up goats to feed to the trolls in the hope that would keep them occupied and away from FWR, Alas I see my efforts are unsuccessful!
Grrrr!

Reality is, like, just so outdated, man! Oh, hang on, did I mean "woman" there?

Didn't Jesus wear a dress? So...I mean...oh no! He is really a She?

Wasn’t sure this warrants its own thread, but Andrew Gold has interviewed Ritchie Herron.

https://twitter.com/AndrewGold_ok/status/1816890239115272336

As you’d expect, it’s tough at times, but Ritchie does such a great job of explaining what happened to him and his perspective on things. I thought his comments about autistic people sometimes finding anime appealing because the exaggerated emotions are easier to read than actual people interesting. I was also interested in his comments about some men not wanting to grow up and feeling that toxic masculinity is a place they don’t want to go, and so being female is a way of wanting to be vulnerable and looked after.

I thought this was an interesting short clip on a couple of levels but mainly for the switch from vulnerable and oppressed victim to angry male.

Another day, another Drag Queen story on the BBC. Honestly, this is beyond a joke now, isn't it?

Having been down a fair few back alleys in Liverpool I'm not sure I'd want to sit on the floor in one to have my photo taken!

The angry, whining entitlement.
